All I see is that it says 1.85:1. Couldn't/wouldn't he have just opened it up from 2.35:1 to show more of the frame, rather than chopping off the sides?

That's Robert Rodriguez for you

Yeah it's most likely opened up, not cropped. There may be some loss from the sides, but there will most likely also be more on the top and bottom(compare Grindhouse screenshots with Planet Terror to get an idea).

That sucks big time. Don't they know by now that 2.35 and 2.40 are preferred to 1.85 and 1.78

it wasn't cropped on the DVD. it was open matted. It's a directoral decision not just some arbitrary studio pan n scan decision. Rodriguez does this for all his movies

It was shot open matte. RR does this for all films so that his films will have the best possible presentation no matter what format. People dislike cropping because it messes with a director's vision, but RR's vision wasn't specifically 2.40... it was whatever fit the screen.

I was expecting some cheap photoshop double feature type cover art . . . I have to say, while I'd really prefer these on separate discs, it doesn't look too bad. Hopefully the quality doesn't suffer from them being on one disc.

So none of the special features will be carried over from the past releases?

They are there, just listed at the top of the back cover instead of with each indivdual movie.

I'm not sure what the norm for super low budget movies are when release on Blu-ray, but do you think they there will be lots of foley work done to replace audio to get it up to DTS HD MA standards?

Price just dropped to $12.99.

I hope Amazon changes the preorders in the next few days - hate to call for $1

I'm worried about the treatment for El Mariachi since it was ultra-low budget.

That is a fantastic pre-order price! I hope the trend continues and 2011 brings some less expensive catalog releases, things are looking great so far!

I just preordered. My German Steelbook combo eagerly awaits this disc. I hope the audio for Desperado is loud and clear.

Its pretty awesome that a Blu-Ray double feature is coming out for both films. This and Machete will be first Blu-rays I'll get next year.

Heads-up for anyone who preordered and chose "release date delivery" (Prime) -- whenever I've had them adjust the price (price dropped on the site, preorder price remained the same) it changes the delivery date to 2-days after release. Better option is to wait a day or two for it to auto-adjust, or cancel/re-order.

Unhappy Mexico Trilogy

There is no Mexico Trilogy on BD. El Mariachi and Desperado are being released as a Double Feature. Once Upon A Time in Mexico is a solo release. Why didn't they put all three together in one box set? I predict a double dip soon. Don't be surprised if you see The Mexico Trilogy on BD a while after these two releases. Such a shame. I hate when they double dip and triple dip!!! I'd rather wait until there is a 3 movie set with some more extras.

Mariachi was shot on 16mm 1.33 and then on Laserdisc was matted to 1.66, so we are losing even more pic info on the blu-ray of El Mariachi...i believe the DVD was also 1.85.

This will be my fourth dip for Desperado. I had the laserdisc, dvd, superbit dvd, and now the BD.

The sound was always amazing, even on the laserdisc.

I'm stoked!
