I've had the Netflix app for a while now and it only occurred to me last week I could use it at the Gym. I kept watching podcasts and stuff. D'oh! It's awesome for the gym or travel on the phone.

I now have 1 month of an actual trial for Netflix, chances are after I've watched a few of the movies in their selection that I'm interested in I'll be cancelling. Gonna get my $9 this month that's for sure
They add new movies weekly and each month every movie on Starz is also added. You can watch a live feed of the Starz channel on the webpage. They have added 6,000 titles since I started watching streaming about 2 years ago and are playing the studios a couple billion for streaming rights. Expect the selection to only get better and eventually move to everything being available streaming. That is the model that Apple and some like George Lucas see the future of entertainment to go.

There are supposed to be about 100 devices you can stream Netflix with.

I'm pretty sure the American Netflix selection is different from the Canadian Netflix one. Are there any 2010 releases in your selection?

Only a few. There are many more from 2009 then 2010. I have the streaming with 2 disc option for $12.99. I hardly exchange discs. I mostly stream. There are tons of movies I have never seen that I find on streaming. New doesn't always equal better.

Didn't say new was better, I'm trying to get a feel for how different the American selection is from the Canadian one. Seems to be very different judging by your comments. For the most part I see low budget no name titles that play in lower than TV quality.
Within 1 or 2 months I expect to have watched all the movies I can find of interest, at which point I'll cancel.

OK, well there are many 2008 and 2009 titles like Star Trek, Gamer, The Descent 2, Crank 2, The Crazies, Saw VI, Zombieland, Surrogates, Angels and Demons, 2012, UP, GI Joe Rise of the Cobra, Iron Man, District 9, Law Abiding Citizen many are streaming in HD. I wouldn't call those titles low budget. There are also tons of TV shows. They even have all of the sitcom Soap from the 70s along with Kolchak up to the latest seasons of shows like 30 Rock and King of The Hill. All of the Serenity TV series in on there too. When you watch a steaming series when it completes one show it goes right into the next.

Watched an incredible hand drawn animated movie, The Secret of Kells with my daughter. Lots of Emmy talk about it. That was streaming in HD.

There are lots of gems. I am watching the three part Red Riding in HD. Its a BBC mini-series based on the Yorkshire Ripper case. They also just added a ton of National Geographic specials, Midway, Special Forces, Downed Subs, etc..

Look on the website, its easier to find stuff. Add it to your Instant Queue so its there when you go online.

Dude you're not listening to me. See below.

To finally put this to bed, here you are:

Star Trek Not Available
Gamer Not Available
The Descent 2 Not Available
Crank 2 Not Available
The Crazies Not Available
Saw VI Not Available
Zombieland Not Available
Surrogates Not Available
Angels and Demons Not Available
2012 Not Available
UP Not Available
GI Joe Rise of the Cobra Not Available
Iron Man Not Available
District 9 Not Available
Law Abiding Citizen Not Available
Secret of Kells Not Available
Red Riding 1974 Not Available

Not a single one of those movies is available in Canada. It's a new service here so obviously it'll take time for the selection to build, but I'm not willing to pay the same price as US customers for 1/10th the service. I will happily wait for the service to improve so it's worth the money.

Found this article that notes that and also has a large list of what is offered. Being that they only have had it for only 6 weeks in Canada, it can only get better. http://www.channelcanada.com/Article5129.html

And this:

http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/20...a-without-dvds

Update: WebProNews asked Netflix VP, Corporate Communications Steve Swasey if the company has plans to offer DVD service in Canada in the future. He simply replied, "Pure streaming in Canada." He also notes that the Canadian catalog features different titles and is based on different licenses.

"Netflix members in Canada can instantly watch movies and popular shows – such as 'Superbad,' 'A Beautiful Mind' and 'Mad Men'...

BTW, there is an official NetFlix blog where you can interact directly with the company.

None of that is very relevant to what we're talking about here. Netflix telling me my $9 is a fair price for the selection isn't proof of anything except that Netflix doesn't want to bash their own service. Considering the American service is only $9/mth and provides WAY more movies, I'd say it's fair to say the Canadian price is a rip off.
My poiny, once again, is that Canada Netflix selection is lacking pure and simple. The reasoning is irrelevant. If it improves in the future I will go for it again. My post here is to warn people that the Canadian Netflix selection is very limited (but that I did get access to more movies when I started paying).

Default Dumping Cable?

I have read through all of the NetFlix thread here as I have been thinking for a few months of dumping my cable bill. I use PlayOn and will likely sign up for NetFlix but my question is what will I be missing?

I understand some of my shows will go bye-bye (Pawn Stars!) but how about sports??? Am I thus limited to whatever football/hoops I can find on CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox?

Thanks for any input.

Its whatever is out on DVD is what you get and that is further limited to what they have streaming unless you go with the one BD a month plan. But other shows you can have stream to your PS3 with Hulu Plus. Check out Hulu and see if your shows are there. Plus is real cheap and you can stream on demand HD or current TV shows to your PS3 and have access to previous seasons. You can stream some current TV shows via the web now on Hulu's free edition but you are limited to the current season and streaming via computer. You want sports? You can find all the games online too. PM if you want that info.

My wife and I dropped cable and picked up Hulu Plus along with Netflix. It's about $100 back in our pockets every month for TV and a phone service we hardly ever used. The only time I have missed cable was when the Vikings were on MNF a couple of weeks ago, but a trip to the local sports bar took care of that...not to mention took care of the pain from the shellacking the Bears handed my Vikes.

http://feedfliks.com/

this site lets you know what's coming to streaming and when as well as when things are expiring. It's nice to know in advance, oh and for the person who mentioned Pawn Stars, its available to stream
