Think we'll ever see "The Hole" over here in the states, and find out whether it was Joe Dante's shameless 80's-homage to "The Gate"?

(Seems a nice climate for shameless 80's-homages, with Super 8, and all.)

Didn't want to start a new thread for this, but I managed to get to watch the UK release the other night.

I really like The Hole as a movie .. up until we get to actually go into the hole then it kinda becomes a little formula for my liking.

Well the 3D looks very nice in this, the full height 1.85:1 always helps. In fact this is one of the best looking live action 3D movies I have seen. There isn't much pop but the depth is lovely throughout. Reflections on surfaces in scenes that normally cause issues on live action 3D movies are really kept to a minimum throughout which I liked.

Oh it was region B only too guys I am afraid.

Good find, but since that is from Amazon China and not Hong Kong, how do we know it's region A or region-free instead of region C?

I have an opened but unwatched region B 3D BD that I would like to sell. I don't have a region free player. If anyone wants to trade or buy it let me know. I'll sell for 13.00.

It's a pretty good native title, good 3D but unless you have a region free player it's not going to work in the US.

Loved the first half of the film but then it died in the arse. 3D was ok, nothing special though.

Mixed bad for me with this one. The scenes looking up from the hole were full 3D and looked super but a lot of the rest of the film was quite flat. The other really good 3D scenes were those involving the evil jester. The 3D seemed to be cranked up for those scenes and it really worked. The Jester's face looked really good with his facial features standing out making him look more menacing.

One day we may get a whole film where the whole 3D looks consistently stunning. One day maybe.

I bought this on ebay last night. It was listed as a region-free Dutch import and the back of the case had the real Blu3d logo. I tried to do some quick research (I only had a few minutes) and couldn't find a word about that particular release. I hope it turns out okay... There aren't many options for US viewers who want to see this film in real 3d. Has anyone heard anything about this release?

Holland

I imported the region-free Dutch release of The Hole via eBay and fed it to the black, disc-eating hole in my PS3 tonight.

Joe Dante has created a slightly creepy, somewhat bizarre PG-13 horror flick, centered around a mysterious hole found in the basement of a new house by two brothers and their Girl Next Door neighbor. The characters and the plot are a little clichéd but very likeable. It was fun to watch the story unfold, especially when the Darkness came to life.

I had high expectations for The Hole's 3D, and it did not disappoint. The 3D achieves a realistic look that few live-action 3D movies attain. The well-layered depth appears consistently strong. Convergence is maintained at a high but comfortable level, allowing bits of the foreground to rest in negative parallax. Thanks to appropriate lens choice, human forms are almost always rounded and life-like. There are a number of pop-out moments, involving nails, baseballs, splashes, and feathers. Camera views looking up from the hole work incredibly well, creating a window within a window. There are also nice 3D effects with drifting vapor, views from tall heights, and a fish-eye lens.

The 3D energized the story and heightened emotional involvement by making the characters and their odd surroundings look real. I'm glad to add The Hole to my 3D collection, and I hope it gets a U.S. Blu-ray 3D release so more people can experience the fun.

Movie - 3.5/5
Stereography - 4.5/5
Pop-out - 4/5
Depth - 4.5/5
Roundness - 5/5

Thanks for the review. I have a region B The Hole (ordered by mistake) and always wondered how the movie and 3D are. Again, it's for sale to anyone having a region free player.

Default THE HOLE 3D (Joe Dante)

So what are people's thoughts on this movie? It's been available in the UK for some time on 3D Blu, but i know it's only recently been released theatrically in the States (not sure if that was a 3D presentation or not). The price for the UK Blu is very reasonable now.

I think it's a good movie, like a horror but for teenagers. Definitely not to be dismissed as a kids film as there are some well staged scare scenes and moments of suspense that would probably be too intense for some children.

The 3D is very good too, with nice depth and a few pop out moments. Only mild criticism is that a lot of the setting is just in a house, which perhaps doesn't lend itself to amazing 3D moments.

Anyone else enjoy this movie/ the 3D?

Saw the film in 2D on Blu and agreed with Mark Kermode that it was good and probably under-rated when theatrically released.

When I got my 3D setup a few weeks ago I liked the film enough to order the 3D version but haven't got around to watching it in 3D yet.

Smile agreed, its tops!

I think it was really enjoyable. Joe Dante really knows how to direct with pace and therefore what could be a slow and tedious exercise turns into something dramatically different.

I really liked the pop out moments, the baseball bit being my favourite 3D scene in the film. Great depth as well and fullscreen. What more can we ask for??
