What a disappointment. Only watched two episodes, wanted to stop after the first but am mildly curious to see how the rest is. The comic book is quite good and this is, as many have said, a PG13, dare I say PG, extremely tame version of it, going for whimsical I guess instead of the much darker comics.
It's a big problem but the main one is that it looks incredibly nondescript. It bums me out that Netflix decided to throw away a pilot directed by Andy goddam Muschietti who imo is an excellent director with a real eye, very visual. So yeah, the show here looks very TVish, very plain, flat, boring. The comics is begging for a really low key, shadowy, mysterious, intriguing visual approach, with actual flair and scale. The acting is pretty subpar as well so far. The writing (Joe Hill co-wrote some episodes) is bleh. And it feels rushed. I can't believe they went through all of this, two canned pilots, an aborted trilogy of low budget films to make this. There's no intrigue, no tension, it's shot in the most boring (and downright amateurish at times, awful, awful drone shots in there too) way, too many changes. I've seen a ton of negativity from fans but it seems casual viewers are liking it more, that's the advantage of not knowing what they ****ed up. By the way, Mark Romanek's 2011 pilot is available on Vimeo. It too feels very TVish, networky (Fox at the time) but it is so much more faithful, stronger cast and writing too. Yep, this is straight out of Carlton Cuse's school of vanilla-TV show making. They pointlessly changed key aspects of the original story and drained every bit of suspense and intrigue out of it. It's not even about the more horror aspect of it. They then topped it off with bad actors and awful directing. Shame since this could've been even bigger than Stranger Things with a more competent team behind it.

I don't know about comics because I've never been into them. But almost any time you're into the written version of a story the filmed version is going to disappoint. There are a few exceptions, for me Lord Of The Rings is one example. I couldn't stand the written version mostly because I didn't like the writing style but the movies were wonderful.
I'm on episode 5 right now. Still enjoying it. I usually prefer a more mature style of show but I can have fun with something like this now and then. It's alright. Going to try to finish the rest sometime today or tonight. |

I'm at episode 10 but getting too tired. Going to sleep for a while and finish the last episode when I wake up.
Maybe it's not what the comic is. But for someone that has no idea what the real story is, it's a fun show. I've watched the first 9 episodes without ever once getting bored or wanting to switch to something else. So that's something at least. ![]() Last edited by Lovemy3D; 02-10-2020 at 08:53 PM. |
