I bought the blu-ray not knowing what to expect from the film. It's slow but engaging but i really didn't like how the movie ended. I was bug-eyed and thinking to myself "That's it???" I really expected more after all the build up. As for the picture quality, everything looks pretty decent for a budget production like this. Some parts look quite impressive while other are a little on the soft side. The transfer is only problematic during the night scenes probably due to the source material. Definitely a rent before buy.

You realise that
[Show spoiler]the ending loops back to the beginning, right? The scene at the very start happens after the chronological last scene of the film? I didn't realise either of these things until I looked it up, and made me think the ending was better than I first thought...

Received my copy in the UK today. Came with an intriguing leaflet promoting the forthcoming release of Trollhunter on blu ray - no release date though

Just finished viewing, and I loved it. This isn't your normal E.T. - American's blow the crap out of invading aliens, type film. It's slow paced, but very powerful in regards to people's connections. The original score is also awesome.

It's a great movie. Very subtle, quiet and sometimes even silent.

The US version has 2 more lengthy interviews, a longer behind the scenes, deleted scenes and subplots, all not on the UK version. I'd say the US version wins in wealth of extras.

Here's -from what I understand- the differences with the UK and North American (Region AB -although Maple Pictures released this in Canada -I assume it's the same but beware) releases:

UK review here

Audio Commentary by Gareth Edwards, Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able

Behind the Scenes (55:15 HD)

Editing Monsters
(23:21 HD)

Monsters VFX (28:46 HD)

Introduction to Factory Farmed by Gareth Edwards (01:25 HD)

Factory Farmed (05:12 HD)

Trailer (01:27 SD)

-------------------------------------------------------

North America review here

Audio Commentary with Gareth Edwards, Scoot McNairy, and Whitney Able

Deleted and Extended Scenes
(1080p, 20:07)

Behind the Scenes of Monsters (1080p, 1:09:15)

Monsters: The Edit (1080p, 21:31): Editor Colin Goudie explains the process of combing through hundreds of hours of almost entirely improved footage and trying to sculpt an emotional through-line out of it.

Visual Effects (1080p, 34:56): Edwards talks about his career in visual effects and explains the film's digital workflow.

Interview with Gareth Edwards (1080p, 44:16): Another extensive interview with Edwards

Interview with Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able (1080i, 28:04)

New York Comic Con Discussion with Gareth Edwards (1080i, 5:02)

HDNet: A Look at Monsters (1080i, 4:40): A typical HDNet promo, with a plot overview and an interview with the director.

-------------------------------------------------------

So, US is the winner on extras for me. I have both releases now and intend to watch this and all the extras next week.

UK has a lenticular slipcase and USA (don't know about Canada) has an embossed slipcase.

Has to be the deepest lenticular effect I've seen so far:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xi6...ers-uk-blu-ray

UK cover:

Disc is locked B.

Blood, sweat and tears -the amount of effort I put into uploading these images, I hope people like them

I'd like to see more videos of slipcovers etc as you get a better feel for them.

Not a massive fan of slipcovers which don't go all the way to the top of the case, but anyway. I'll probably get this BD soon, I did rather like it when I saw it at the cinema.

haha @ the review on the front of the UK one calling it 'action packed'. The mis-marketing of the movie continues...

Thanks for the info The Driver, I picked the UK version up today in Tesco's I'm a bit gutted we've missed out on so much. I wouldn't have bothered if I'd known. I would have waited for the price to drop. It was £2 cheaper in ASDA as well. I'm having a bad run....

Rented this from Love Film and absolutely loved it. Definite buy when the price goes down.

Yeah, that's this one (posted above too) here

From the USA.

As for price (here and the USA) the price has collapsed already because this film isn't going to be everyone's bag. The covers/artwork and reviews are tempting to people who would not normally go near a film like this (ie it's mostly about that couple (who are a couple in real life too incidentally) on the front).

"It's a road movie interspersed with reflections on humanity and its need to kill and the human condition to refract its needs and wants against alien life -with a beautifully crafted denouement".

There, use that for a quote

Seriously, I love the movie so the special features are all important (hopefully).

Did you guys realize US version has 7.1 DTS HD MA and UK only 5.1?
I also confirm Australian version has LPCM 5.1 soundtracks.

We really got screwed on the UK release. I don't know why Momentum bothered it seems they've gone out of their way to give UK buyers a 2nd rate product. I know it was probably some rights issue but it sucks when there's a wealth of stuff on other countries discs. With such an interestng film as well it would have been nice to delve into the production.

Momentum is owned by the dodgy and forever morphing and debt-dodging Alliance and the surely bankrupt and run-out-of-ideas studio, Paramount.

I think the oddest thing is locking the disc to B. Very strange attitude to take but something they seem to do often. That can't be a rights' issue either but down to bad and unfocused [UK] management because the USA release is stealing sales off the UK distributor -that's fine but a bit of a shame really.

Still, we'll always have Paris the lenticular.
