I saw a copy of Shogun Assassin in the nearest CEX to me, and thought I'd grab it for the unique extras next to my Criterion edition. Was the only person in line for about five minutes while about seven people were behind the tills and just getting on with other things. Eventually one guy said to me "the queue starts at the other end, just a heads up mate."

Oh ok, so even though I'm stood right in front of you and no one else is in line, you'll serve me if I walk thirty feet to the other end of the barrier, then back again? Not condemning all stores but literally 85% of my experiences in CEX have been utterly abysmal. I just left.

The Norwich branch is the same. I try to avoid going in there on weekend's because the staff in there are slow as molasses and seem to takes ages to do anything.

Camberley is the closest branch to me, but the Reading branch is the one I go to the most.

Really the only problem I've had in there was one time last year when I picked up "Doctor Who: K9 Tales". They had just changed to a different kind of sticker which left a lot of residue after being removed.

But otherwise, most of the stuff is usually pretty good quality.

If I ever picked up anything bad, it was usually down to the original owner of the item that didn't look after it properly.

Camberley CEX is fairly awful. No uhd section, they’re bunched with the blus. Dedicated walls to 50p DVD’s though. They’d rather have about 30 50p copies of iRobot then use space to showcase £10-£25 UHDs.

The manager said, yeah but we buy those for a penny, so it’s 50% profit each time. I didn’t bother to suggest selling one new uhd title clears the same as your entire irobot stock. (It doesn’t but you get what I mean)

I moan, but I did pick up a near mint Gleaming the Cube dvd for 50p just before Xmas whilst my wife was looking for tat in Wilkinson.

Yeah, some staff don't have good manners. I once took a bunch of DVDs to trade in around 4:30pm and the guy behind the till told me off for leaving it so late in the day to bring them in. They close at 5:30pm, it's not like I arrived right when they were about to lock up. I didn't answer him back, but haven't been there since, choosing instead to trade stuff in via post and ordering online (the latter which I've stopped since they've introduced the £1.50 delivery charge per item).

Yeah, that's how I'd describe it after I went in there on Saturday (I was in Camberley as I hadn't been there for ages, and felt like going).
TBF, it was only my second time going into the Camberley branch. The girl that served me was very friendly, but she also seemed quite shy. I went in there to sell my Dave era Red Dwarf DVD's (the blurays are on the way in the post) and my Xbox One copy of "Soulcalibur 6" (awful game).

The other time I went in there was years ago before a job interview at the Atrium. At that time, the guy behind the counter was a total prick that wouldn't take my mint condition Chronicle steelbook, even though the disc had BBFC logos on it. Put me in a bad mood that followed me to my job interview.

The staff in the Reading branch are fantastic though. They're always very engaging with me and very helpful.

Hopefully not, but if hmv go from Guildford, at least the CEX there is really good always painful queues but always find decent stuff.

Have to go to Camberley tomorrow so will at some point ditch wife and son (can’t take him, he’s 2.5 and will get board play up and want a saggy CEX balloon, before I’ve gazed through to D) for a quick scan. If I’m organised I’ll check stock online first to see if it’s worth it.

Personally never had any issue with rude staff etc (in the Glasgow stores), generally the opposite.
The only time I had an issue was trying to take a PS3 in for repair***, the store (Sauchiehall St) was listed as a drop off point but was told instore that was not the case, so wasted time & money parking. I was able to drop it off at another store (Union Street) later that day, but the PS3 wasn't repairable (or at least would have cost more to repair than it was worth).

*** CeX have a relatively new repair service, 'Cex Clinic' for various electronics. My PS3 was a 5 year old 'super slim' model I'd bought at Smyths. If you bought something at CeX that turned out to be faulty, you could return to any store. But for the repair service, its only certain stores.

I can second this about the Reading staff. I have never encountered an unfriendly member of staff there. Everyone's always so chatty and friendly. The only problem I have with that store (other than some of the customers there) is that they've now stuck the Blu-rays so close to the Xbox and PS4 games that you end up having to try and look around people browsing the games.

Yeah, I do wish they had kept the blu-ray section were it used to be.

Find the staff at the Norwich branch to be pleasant and sensible. Wish there was a wider range of UHDs though.

Just depends on what they get traded in. I'd like them to get more UHD's in. Doubt they'll shift that Independence Day UHD with reprinted cover for a while.

Beyond the smell of piss and sadness which emanates from within and the fact that so much of the stock is utterly filthy (there is an original Xbox in my local that has chocolate or else shit in all the grooves on one side) my only real issue with CEX is the manner in which they sticker products. I once purchased Once Upon a Time in America director's cut Blu in there and when I got home saw that it was the normal edition. Went back in and they point blank refused to refund me and told me that I got exactly what was advertised. I pointed out that the case and disc were not correct and was told that as the sticker on the front did not list it as the director's cut version there was nothing they would do. Got a manager out and he refused to refund me, I asked what would happen if I picked up a copy of FIFA 18 and paid 40 euro for it but got the disc for FIFA 17 and the sticker said FIFA 17 what would happen, "nothing as you got what you were promised" was the reply. Was genuinely shocked by how they work and it put me off using them for anything other than the odd bargain.

I pop in CEX whenever I happen to be in town (not often) and have a browse to see if I can pick up any cheap anime or documentary's on Blu Ray.

However, I purchased the Aeon Flux DVD set through the online shop recently and it was pretty dirty when it arrived which wasn't pleasant, I sprayed a good amount of anti-bacterial on it and now I feel ok to actually handle it.

I think I'll be doing that going forward with whatever I buy from there regardless if it looks dirty or not.

I tend to avoid the online shop for this reason. Even if it's something I'm waiting ages to appear in the actual store, I'll still wait. If it's not that, it's the inconsistent prices put me off something.

I'm trying to pick up Lucky on Blu for a decent price. On there online store they have it cheaper on Blu than on DVD, and no cover image for either. It's no worth the risk to see what I actually get.

They offer a 2 days return guarantee for store credit, so I'm not sure what happened.

They sound like dicks.

All my praise for CEX aside, I did have one major issue when I got something from their van at MCM London a few years ago.

They had the 4-disc release of "UP" on one of the temp stands.
Bought it but I didn't get the chance to look it over until after the event.

When I did open it, there was some questionable white dried substance on the inside of the case.

Made me wonder if they checked anything over before putting the stands up.

I had no idea what it was...

My only issue with Norwich CeX is the constant stench of body odour.

Go for it, if it's not acceptable then print off the invoice go into the shop and ask for a refund. Lucky is a pretty new and relatively obscure release so I doubt it will come damaged or greasy.

I never picked up on it but then again I could take responsibility for that, lol.
