You really think you can see the difference on a 40 inch TV. Just read the new comments on the theatrical release. I say again they look fantastic. FOTR could have looked a little better i think. But it still loks pretty darn good

Yes.
We'll just have to agree to disagree.

I saw my FOTR BD on a 37" 720p TV and even on that I could tell it looked poor compared to most other catalogue releases that I have... catalogue releases of big-budget blockbusters, anyway. The sound (on a proper system) was, however, fantastic.

Enjoy your DVD's I think it's going to be a while before the blu-rays match the DVD price. Or they're released for that matter.

I think originally they were gonna release them to coincide with the first Hobbit movie, but with that being put back all the time they've probably given up on that idea and will just release them sooner (this year hopefully).

I'm kind of hoping that these films will require a new transfer, given the fact that (as far as I'm aware), they have never been broadcast in HD and therefore the TV HD master would not exist to "double dip" upon as they clearly did with the theatricals. They weren't terrible, but they certainly didn't look as good as Braveheart or Gladiator v 2.0.

I'm also hoping the films will be on one disc. The story over at theonering.net seems to indicate 2 discs, but it's unclear whether that's speculation or from a source.

With 50 GB, it shouldn't be an issue to get these full films on the disc in a glorious presentation (with all the extras -- save commentaries -- being put on the other discs).

Got to be 1 disc surely? I didn't get into blu-rays to swap movies over at half time like a chump!

Really now? I'm still waiting for an Ultimate James Bond Blu Box which contains all the movies and their extras. Oh well, I still have my DVD attaché case edition to keep me happy till then.
