That reminds me.... (since you listed Zappa)

Prince often gets overlooked because he's..... well.... A freak.... And despite the fact that I'm not a huge Prince fan, the guy is an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G guitar player.

Prince is just an amazing musician all around. The man can play pretty much anything. A lot of people don't know that. His guitar virtuosity is definitely superb though.

Not a superhuge fan of his, but I most definitely agree!

I'm scratching my head wondering how it is that I left Bill Nelson off my list. From my own avatar and sig. to boot!

My 10 Favourite Guitarists:

1. Tony Iomi (Black Sabbath)
2. K.K. Downing (Judas Priest)
3. Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest)
4. Angus Young (AC/DC)
5. Zakk Wylde (Ozzy, Black Label Society & the film "Rock Star")
6. Mick Mars (Motley Crue)
7. Joe Perry (Aerosmith)
8. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppellin)
9. Brian May (Queen)
10. Randy Rhoads (Ozzy)

Have been fortunate enough to see 8 of the 10 in person. Brian May and Jimmy Page are the two that I haven't. Saw Randy Rhoads with Ozzy on the Blizzard of Ozz Tour. Fantastic young player who passed away well before his time.

Gonna take a quick glance at my iPod. Hmm, I can narrow my list down to 15 guitarists, in no particular order:

Duane Allman (played with the Allman Brothers, Herbie Mann, Derek & the Dominos)
Dan Auerbach (of the Black Keys)
Eric Clapton (played with John Mayall, the Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, etc.)
Buddy Guy (saw him live with B.B. King... and he just embarrassed B.B.)
Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits)
Frank Zappa
Jimi Hendrix (his best guitarwork is on the posthumous album is entitled Blues)
Neil Young (played with Crosby Stills & Nash, Buffalo Springfield, etc.)
Tom Verlaine (of Television)
Otis Rush (blues)
Mike Bloomfield (played with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Electric Flag, on the Super Session album, etc.)
David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd)
Roy Buchanan
Carlos Santana
Wes Montgomery (jazz)

Don't get me wrong; I love me some SRV from time to time. But I find his popularity a bit overblown.

Nice choice with Steve Vai. Saw him twice with "Roth".

MAJOR . Mick's also one of my faves. In a band with 3 MASSIVE egos to feed, Mick quietly goes about his business delivering sledge hammer riffs.

My only knock on him, is a lot of his solo stuff is hard to digest as songs. Big fan of his Passion and Warfare album though

Yeah I like alot of his weird solo stuff but Vai lacks the ability to write a good rock song. That's why I'd rather listen to Satriani.

I'll throw my .02 in on this one...

David Gilmour (my all time favourite)
Slash
Dimebag Darrell
The Edge (more melodic than technical prowess...but where would "...streets..." be without that sound??)
Kirk Hammett
BB King
Eric Clapton
Brad Paisley
Vince Gill (I may get flak for this one...but he is a great guitarist with a very laid back melodic sound...and if he is good enough to play with the likes of Clapton, he is good enough for me!)
Peter Frampton

and lastly, I've got to give the bass guitar some love and include
Flea

hmm...i guess that's more than 10. But I can't seem to weed any of those out! Such is the plight of life

I'd flack you on Hammett before Vince Gill. From a technical standpoint anyway.

haha - can I dodge some of the flak if I put this disclaimer in for Kirk?:

Kirk Hammett (well....up to, but not including the Black Album and beyond...)
