I probably wasn't gonna buy this anyways and def won't now. The Tron Disc is a bit too small and wtf is up with having to hold down a button for it to keep lighting up...whoever makes these decisions tsk tsk

...is it me, or are these so called collector/limited editions getting worse every time a new one comes out?
I mean, as a collector I will hold my hands up and agree that many of these things are never value for money, but looks like the companies are helping us make our decisions with their greed. I'm sorry but IMO that looks crap! yes I know I don't have to buy it... but what makes me laugh is that I wanted to buy it! but it's so bad it's made the decision easy for once! Already cancelled this US version now, and thinking about doing same for UK Limited version as that doesn't look like a good deal either for the price. |

It's debatable to say that 'Special Editions' are worse now than before.
On old DVDs, "Special Editions" used to mean "interactive menus" and "original theatrical trailers". The truth is probably that it is harder to include something of value for next to nothing. Spending a lot more on alien egg packaging, or a plastic motorcycle is not value to me. I would much prefer simpler promos like SteelBooks/IronPacks, plush toys, or things kids would use like doodle pads, etc. That coupled in with the fact that I've been buying special editions for some years now and it is more an issue to store those odd-shaped items as you can't put them all on display at once unless you live in a museum. |

I don't agree when you say its difficulty to add 'something of value for next to nothing'. Firstly: if you take the UK limited edition of Tron, its sum of parts doesn't nearly add up to the cost of what they are asking. You can't be saying that they can't mass produce something better than a shiny box for a £35 premium? where exactly is that money going? Second: With better art and designs skills, they can make anything look good, and that itself can often add value to a product if it looks good enough, it doesn't always have to be about adding a gimmicky toy. Look at that disc, you have to hold a button to keep the light on? the writing on the base could have been in silver/white or something with a bit more style, but they went for something that looks so cheap, they could have easily put it into a steel tin, but they couldn't have asked for nearly as much money then. The thing about having 'plush toys' etc. is you have to remember it's a specific market, and I'm not sure that would work for the majority? and it would only work with specific movies. I agree with you when you say you'd rather have a steelbook/ironpack, so would I. but how often do they even bother adding them to the Limited/Special editions? Some companies know what a collectors/limited should be, the rest think its a great way to make more money, and what I'm saying is they're making it a bit too obvious now, hence the easy decision to cancel. Just for an example, I don't know if you remember the Lord of the Rings: Collectors Platinum Series back in 2003? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...6link_code=xm2 These IMO were much better than what's available today.... |

I think it's fair to say that studios are taking advantage of the collector now that they know that hard-core collectors will buy almost anything.
The only power the collector has is to choose not to buy something. If the studios try to release junk for a high premium, they will learn their lesson when they are stuck with overstock and retailers have to clear them out. I see from your example of what you consider a decent premium with the castle. Personally, I am not interested at all in castles or figures or displays because they do not fit in with my home theatre style. Actually, I should correct myself. I do have a replica of the golden statue from the beginning of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK in my HT, which one of my goofy friends replaced one night with a bag of sand. Overall, if you are saying that the TRON disc holder looks cheap, then yes, I agree. They could have spent a little more effort to make it a little nicer, but I was unimpressed with the INCEPTION briefcase and also the ALIEN egg, so I guess my expectations are now pretty low for these things in general. The only premiums that I have been interested in were SteelBooks (like everyone else in this forum), bonus discs with supplementary material, and program reprints. |
