I have a setting on my TV which is called Just Scan which basically shows the whole frame. 16:9 causes overscan.

I always watch stuff on it with Just Scan mode. The cropping is really noticeable when it's set to 16:9.

So my dad wants to know, what's the 1:1 or Screen Fit for his Panasonic? (I have 4 Samsung TVs, so I can't help him) and I'm not at his house to play with his settings.
He's asking me if it's "just" or "full"?

If he can load (the full 1080p) pattern on the TV, it would be the setting that gives him the image in smooth, non wavy/moire quality, where he can see the checkerboard pattern (really up close, a magnifier helps)

See if you can see this checkerboard pattern

click on this :

(upload the 1080 version of that thumbnail onto your player/display and switch from 16:9 to Screen Fit to see which one resolves better, if any)

Just is the best setting and it's the same as 1:1 pixel mapping.

Thank you Rob.

As an owner of a Panasonic plasma, I can say that to get the fullest out of his screen, select Full and in the advanced picture settings, go to HD2.

I'm on the phone with him now.
He can't find ADVANCED PICTURE SETTINGS to choose HD2.

God, I wish I was there.

Easiest thing to do is find a 1.85:1 BD in his collection and cycle through the picture options until he can see the letterboxing.

If you know his TV's model number I'll try and go through the manual.

I think I navigated him through it.
He used a news channel, and here I put on the same channel, and he clicked through all the options. Seems like FULL showed the most top and bottom image, like my Screen Fit setting. Especially when I was talking to him about what he sees under the scrolling news at the bottom of most news shows. So he used that setting to watch Hateful Eight.
Next time I'm there, I'll be checking his settings as well.

Well that's why I posted the pattern that I use to confirm in actual use that I'm getting the complete 1080p 1:1 resolution from the display

(I also have one for 4k too )

I was always using 16:9 until I start reading this thread just now. I wish more people would know it, Screen Fit really is that much better! Man I have owned the TV for quite a long while and never mess about this setting before..

I would just like to add another important point for those who may have missed it:
While TV have this screen fit option -> in some blu-ray player, there is also this option. My blu-ray player have it and I switched it to screen fit too, marvelous.

Why on earth did the manufacturer make this kind of option, I can understand for other video format this is acceptable, but certainly not for blu-ray watching! I'm quite sure 90% of the majority crowd out there doesn't know about switching this for TV or player thus have less than perfect picture quality all the time.. Hmm.

It's really easy to find out which display setting is best. Pause a movie with an 1.85:1 image, go to your "wide" options... The full image fit would have the top and bottom having a thin black bar going across.... Switching to 16:9 would make those bar's disappear. Also keep an eye on the sides looking at an object like a tree or something, and go back and forth... You'd see clear imagery loss.

Just use your eyes.

I have a Sony blu ray Player, cannot remember the model currently.

The Setting is Video Mode: I set it to Normal rather than Full. Of course on the TV I did the screen fit setting too.

But now thinking about it, probably this setting in my blu ray player is meant for other film format. I do get the little black bar on top and bottom and confirmed it is really the full resolution.

I don't see why this is even being debated. Screen fit all the way.

Probably because of people who freak out over 1.85 bars. I can't stand it when 1.85 is cropped because it makes the image look like it was made for TV. I want every single pixel.
