There’ve been rumblings about Quentin Tarantino’s next project for a while now. He previously talked about doing “a Southern,” a film that would bring to surface all the slavery issues that Americans are none too fond of tackling. Then there was that spaghetti western with Franco Nero rumored to be starring. In that updated story, it was confirmed that Tarantino was in fact writing a western, and Christoph Waltz is one of the stars. Beyond that, nothing else was known. The script was due to be turned in to The Weinstein Company in two months, at which time we might know more. Well, that was February.

Today, we may have learned that the title of Tarantino’s next film may be Django Unchained. How did we learn this? If you remember that image of the title page for the Inglourious Basterds script, with Tarantino’s scribbled handwriting, what lies after the jump may look familiar. Hit the jump to see what I’m talking about.

Tonight an image of what looks to be the title page of Tarantino’s final draft of Django Unchained was tweeted (via Slash Film). Here’s the picture:

It sure looks a great deal similar to that Inglorious Basterds page. Though this may seem a bit far fetched, keep in mind that there exists a 1966 spaghetti western called Django starring none other than Franco Nero, the same person who appeared to have spilled the beans on Tarantino’s next project a few months back.

I wouldn’t put it past Tarantino, a guy with an insane knowledge/passion for spaghetti westerns, to take the Django character and create an entirely new film. I’m not familiar with that western, but apparently Django is a gunslinger who drags around a coffin that conceals a Gatling gun. Consider me sold. Personally, I’m just psyched for a new Tarantino flick. Hopefully we’ll hear more soon, since according to the image Tarantino just finished the final draft a few days ago.

hm i guess thats a cool title but i sort find it hard to believe since Miike made a movie with Django in the title a few years ago and Tarantino was actually in it. but at the same time, theres already a million Django movies so maybe thats the point. either way im excited to see it, but come on anyone would write that on a piece of paper and put it on the internet. hmmm

If it's a "Django" movie QT is making, count on this being in the film.

'Django Unchained' Confirmed As Title; Plot Details and Production Update for Quentin Tarantino’s Spaghetti Western

And so, with last night’s twitpic of the title page of Quentin Tarantino’s latest script, we’re off. The spaghetti western is indeed titled Django Unchained. Franco Nero first spoke about his attachment in February, so the project is surely tied to the character that Nero originated in 1966’s Django. A source who reportedly read the script sent Shadow and Act a plot synopsis that suggests Nero may be too Italian to play the title role:

Quote:
“Django is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter (played by Christoph Waltz) becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner.”
So “Unchained” is literal. That’s great! Thompson on Hollywood confirmed with agency WME that Waltz is on board; Nero indicated Keith Carradine and Treat Williams will also appear. Hit the jump for more production details.

Deadline reports Tarantino has a “top-shelf” cast in mind for Django Unchained. Depending on casting availability, production will start in late summer or fall. The Weinstein Company will handle domestic distribution, and Tarantino is speaking with Universal, Warner Bros., Sony, and Paramount about co-financing and foreign distribution. Universal is the best bet, hoping to continue their relationship with Tarantino after Inglourious Basterds earned the studio $193 million in international box office.

Since the title page leak, Deadline hears the studio and agency will work harder to keep the script under lock and key. Notably, the original tweet by @AgentTrainee has been deleted. But the script is out there, so we may receive more plot details in the near future as casting news starts to come in.

Fansite The Quentin Tarantino Archives suggest the film is also tied to the Takashi Miike movie Sukiyaki Western Django, which Tarantino acted in. My guess is it’s more a titular link than anything thematic. But this Django is unchained, so he could hop on a plane to shoot up Japan.

This is awesome news. I'm glad Tarentino is keeping on with the exploitation-era genre films.

Some More Info on 'Django Unchained'; Quote From Tarantino As Well

Friday afternoon, a Hollywood insider tweeted a photo of the cover page to the long rumored Quentin Tarantino spaghetti western script. The title on the page, seen above, was Django Unchained and the reveal set off a slew of news about Tarantino’s next directorial effort. Our original story was updated with some information but, being as most of it happened over the weekend and we’re talking about the next movie by Quentin Tarantino for God’s sake, we figured it was time for a big update: what’s confirmed, what’s the status of the project, what’s it about, a quote from Tarantino and more.
The news originally broke on Twitter and was followed by us seconds after HitFix got to it. The flood gates then opened up.

Anne Thompson confirmed that Django Unchained was indeed the title and that, despite rumors of several people attached, the only actor confirmed is Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar working with Tarantino in Inglourious Basterds. Tarantino’s agency confirmed the plot line as follows:

Quote:
It’s a western whose lead character is a former slave who is in league with Waltz to save his wife from an evil plantation owner.
That goes along with a plot description Shadow and Act picked up from a commenter over on Hollywood Elsewhere:

Quote:
Django is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter (Christopher Waltz) becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner. And that doesn’t even half begin to cover it! This film deals with racism as I’ve rarely seen it handled in a Hollywood film. While it’s 100 percent pure popcorn and revenge flick, it is pure genius in the way it takes on the evil slave owning south. Think of what he did with the Nazis in Inglorious and you’ll get a sense of what he’s doing with slave owners and slave overseers in this one.
The Playlist then dug up an older quote from Tarantino’s where he was obviously talking about Django Unchained, we just didn’t know it at the time:

Quote:
I’d like to do a Western. But rather than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that everybody is afraid to deal with. Let’s shine that light on ourselves. You could do a ponderous history lesson of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad. Or, you could make a movie that would be exciting. Do it as an adventure. A spaghetti Western that takes place during that time. And I would call it ‘A Southern.’.. I want to do movies that deal with America’s horrible past with slavery and stuff but do them like spaghetti westerns, not like big issue movies. I want to do them like they’re genre films, but they deal with everything that America has never dealt with because it’s ashamed of it, and other countries don’t really deal with because they don’t feel they have the right to.
Deadline reports the project, which will be distributed domestically by The Weinstein Company, is “moving very quickly” with several studios, including Warner Bros., Paramount and Sony, all interested distributing the film internationally. Depending on cast availability, it could shoot as soon as late summer. Tarantino is also expected to have his way with casting.

That’s a whole lot to digest and we haven’t even touched upon the history of the Django character, the other films he’s appeared in, been referenced in and more. Hitfix has a great rundown of that stuff (my favorite quote: “It’s no accident that Boba Fett’s dad is named Jango in the “Star Wars” prequels.”) and you can watch the original 1966 Django on Netflix Watch Instantly right now. Suffice to say, there will be much more to say about Tarantino’s latest in the coming months.

He'll never write anything nearly as good as Pulp Fiction. Kill Bill was good but Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece. He should team up w/Avary again. Since their split his stuff has been pretty mediocre. He should have made The Vega Brothers but he was an idiot.
