Gaiman has written other American Gods stories, has mentioned a sequel is likely to happen and Fuller said he wanted to bring in elements of Anansi Boys and the book has enough stuff in it alone to be more than just 8 episodes

It's been years, maybe more than 10 since I read the book, but the first episode was excellent. McShane, Whittle, and Schreiber are perfectly cast. Script and cinematography are top notch. The viking scene alone is worth the price of admission, and the Bilquis scene, well, they got it just right. Check it out.

It was ok, some slight departures from the book, but nothing big. IIRC the viking scene was far later in the book, I understand why they put it as the kind of preamble to the show though.
The blood at the end though, that was gratuitous and reminded me full well that Bryan Fuller is working on this instead of Hannibal ![]() |

For those claiming it's 'style over substance', I've heard from the reviews that seen the first four episodes that it does build up to a grand narrative.
Edit: Just saw the episode. Wow, talk about kicking the door down. The cinematography is beautiful (par for the course with Fuller), the writing has a good mix of the dramatic and entertaining dark comedy. The violence puts all other shows to shame, except maybe Ash vs. Evil Dead. The actors are all fantastic. Of course not everything of the story is known yet, but it's such a great start and I can wait for more. Yes, the show obviously has style, but you can't really claim it's style over substance in the first episode where we have to be introduced to these characters and start building the world. Definitely has me hooked for more.
FWIW, Neil Gaiman has a particular 'style' with his writing. If you can't get into it, then the show may be able to fix that. American Gods is the epitome of his writing, so it's the best place to start. Stardust is a good second. |
