Default Racing to Heist Movies

Quote:
No studio has ever dared to change the genre of a successful franchise, but I've learned that's exactly what chairman Adam Fogelson and co-chairman Donna Langley are plotting. It's a bold and provocative move. In summary, I like it.

It's already known that Universal has started Chris Morgan -- the screenwriter of Fast Five as well as The Fast And The Furious 3: Tokyo Drift, and Fast & Furious 4 -- on the script for the 6th installment as part of his new production deal at the studio. But Morgan is also a great scripter of the crime thriller genre, like Wanted. So what Fast Five sets up nicely is a Fast Six whose plot revolves around a major robbery. And Universal's intent is to transform the street racing franchise into a series of heist films.

[...] "The question putting Fast Five and Fast Six together for us was: Can we take it out of being a pure car culture movie and into being a true action franchise in the spirit of those great heist films made 10 or 15 years ago?" Fogelson tells me.

The studio honchos agreed that the next installments had to be less about street racing and about more inclusive subject matter. "We've heard so many people say, 'I've never seen one, and I've never wanted to see one…' about the Fast franchise," Fogelson tells me. "So if these movies were still about street racing, there was probably a ceiling on how many people would buy tickets. We wanted to see if we could raise it out of about racing and make car driving ability just a part of the movie, like those great chases in The French Connection, The Bourne Identity, The Italian Job," Fogelson tells me. With Dodge as a partner, "Our strategy behind one of the biggest bets we've ever made is that the business has gone so far towards CG action every weekend, that we really believe creating a movie with real action and real cars will be amazing stuff to people excited by seeing something real."

Fogelson calls Fast Five "the transitional movie". The franchise has moved from Mexico and then Tokyo and now to Rio De Janeiro [...]. Fogelson says Johnson came to Universal seeking to become part of the franchise, and not only is he pivotal to the plot in Fast Five pitted against Vin but he also wants to appear in and be integral to the action in Fast Six.

"This franchise has undergone more interesting twists and turns than any franchise I know of," Fogelson says.

[...]

Universal is trying to manage expectations for Fast Five and its domestic opening on April 29th, so it's low-balling their hopes for at least a $50M to $60M opening. It's done way better than expected overseas where it's opened in a few territories already, but sequels do best internationally. As for Fast Five domestically, "based on screenings, this is the highest testing movie in the franchise so far," Fogelson notes. "But we've absolutely left perfect room for where we want to go with this franchise.

The series has always been a mix of racing and heists...

They have just lowered the prominence of the racing and upped the heist aspect with each sequel.

I just read the article at Collider also and commented on it for the same reason. The guy had never seen any of the movies and made a remark about heist movies needing to be smart and that these really weren't. Gotta love people who judge without watching...

That said, I don't see it as a problem. In fact, I think them moving in that direction might be better. I mean, it still incorporates the car chases, but heisting will become bigger, and those were always some of the best parts of the movies. They just have to make sure they don't lose character moments! That's a big thing for me. I love the characters in this series, and some of my favorite parts in the series are the parts between the characters, like at the BBQ in the first movie. Just don't lose that, and this series will be stable for a while.

Precisely. I like the action stuff of course...but I love the movies because of the characters of Dom, Brian, Roman and Han (I like the other main characters). And by extension I like the action sequences MORE because I really enjoy the characters in them.

Regarding Johnson, I'm glad he is taking a proactive role in wanting to be involved in the next film. There was talk of him even possibly having an off shoot series with this character.

Yea, the whole reason the series works to me is because of the characters. But these last two films seem to be going back to that even more which is awesome. It's amazing to me how far Lin has come from Tokyo Drift to Fast Five. You honestly wouldn't know that the same guy directed them. He's adding more of the character moments, upping the action, and taking the series to new heights. It's great.

And I'm glad to see Dwayne will be back as well. It makes sense to keep his character around, especially if they are indeed thinking about spin-off his character. It'll work better if we get to know him more, so I'm all for him coming back for another go around. As long as all the major players are back again for Fast Six (and considering they're going in a heist direction, that's almost a given) and make sure they don't lose sight of what's great about the series, I'm always game for them continuing.

Yea, I think when it was first announced that Lin would be doing Fast & Furious I was a little worried. Then I saw the movie and thought, "Bring this guy back for the next one!!"

This would be his second spin-off series from an established franchise
...and I must admit, I enjoyed Scorpion King much more than Mummy Returns.

I hope they stick with the plan to end after FF6 personally. Don't want to over stay your welcome; I think six movies is a good number to go out at. It'll give us 4 movies with the original cast, an off shoot for Brian and an off shoot for Han.

I'm interested to see how they approach the characters of Brian and Mia since they
[Show spoiler]find out Mia is pregnant
in Fast Five.

Also...I want to know why Leon isn't back yet

Yea, i was the same way. I mean, I like Tokyo Drift. But I never thought it was exceptionally directed. But man, has that changed. Lin has turned into a pretty badass director! I especially love that he's finally moving away from CGI to do a lot of the stunts and such and going old school Hollywood where he can.

I like The Scorpion King a lot as well. It's entertaining as hell. I just haven't picked it up on blu yet because its a barebones disc...I keep hoping we'll eventually get one with both cuts of the movie and some special features.

I hope they plan on finishing it with that one as well, but that new article is starting to make me think otherwise...I mean, it sounds like they're trying to reinvent it to keep going. I mean I guess they could spin more characters off, like Tyrese and the Rock, but I think the Fast and the Furious franchise itself should end after the next movie. I really, really, really don't want them running this franchise into the ground...But Universal may do that considering it's really their only productive franchise of late.

If the series continues to stay it will certainly be re-invented. You see, I used to be the ideal consumer for this. Back when I was in my teens and in high school, all I read was Euro Tuner, Super Street, and many more tuner mags. I've owned and customized multiple vehicles, been in clubs, toured with my cars, and so forth. Now that years have passed and I'm pushing 30, none of that matters to me anymore. The first three were all about the underground street scene, though nowadays it's somewhat cliche and isn't what it used to be. I do miss those days to a point though.

Yea he's come a good way in just two of these movies. I'm kind of hoping he decides to take the Terminator movie...unless that would delay FF6

That definitely makes it more likely
This is really all they've got that makes big money these days (with a few exceptions here and there).

Riddick is also with Universal as well. Vin Diesel is keeping Universal alive

Oh, I have no doubt it will be. Like I said, it really is Universal's only profitable franchise at the moment. They killed The Mummy series, as well as the Meet the Parents series. They're just barely getting by with their Bourne movie reboot/sequel/spin-off thing, and they're hoping to have a hit with American Pie 4, as well as Vin pushing that third Riddick movie through development hell for them. Fast and the Furious really at the moment seems to be their only cash flow to me. So I'm sure the show will go on, for better or for worse.

Fast Six will be another stupid heist movie. I just want fun races with decent development. But this new change in the franchise sucks. I don't really like these movies anyways, but the races and cars are cool enough. I'll just stick with Tokyo Drift (my favorite) and skip all the newer Fast films. Mainly after the 'so bad it made me wanna puke w/ only 1 race' Fast & Furious 4.

It better not! But that's actually another franchise for Universal if they can get it up and running. I'm honestly ok with them getting the Terminator franchise because they need some hits. They really aren't getting any lately. Your Highness flopped already, and last year it was Scott Pilgrim and Robin Hood. They really can't win.

Quote:

Yea, there was another cut originally that was edited down a lot to what we got. It was a lot more story driven, but they wanted to push The Rock as an action star at the time. I want to say something like twenty or thirty minutes was cut out...That's a lot of missing story.

I hope they finally get Riddick off the ground...I've been waiting forever for that movie.

I'm glad Universal is actually let them do a third one...It's about damn time they took a chance.

You know these movies were all heist films right? And if you don't really like the series why comment?

Yeah I know that they had their heist elements, but they also had that balanced with a decent amount of racing, cool cars, and fun action. Mainly 1 and 3 which are the only ones I can actually watch. The new fast films look to ONLY be heist films with the racing and cars pushed to the side. Now, if they bring back the those other things back in then I will be pleasantly surprised. I might check out Fast Five when it hits Redbox, but after Fast 4 I just lost so much hope in this franchise. And I posted to show my displeasure, not everyone can love this franchise to death. I really want these new Fast films to be great, but we'll see.

See, I actually like Fast and Furious way more then I liked 2 Fast and Tokyo Drift. I'd rather they had the character moments, less racing, and more action if they think its better for the story. You can still have great car scenes if the movie isn't about racing. It's natural for every movie series to evolve. This seems natural to me.

Ehhhh, i'm still VERY skeptical. But as someone that likes to watch everything, i'll still probably watch all the new ones. I just really hope with these new Fast films that they step it up and give the audiences something new while giving us some of those other things we love.

I honestly think you'll be surprised by Fast Five man. Early word is VERY positive. So I think you'll be ok.

Sorry for calling you out earlier by the way, I just get tired of the people who come into threads to rile up people by bashing things. My apologies if I came off as a jerk.

It's all good, man. I probably came off too strong anyways. I haven't read any of the reviews yet, so i'll have to look into it. I remember feeling the same way about the first Iron Man when that came out, and I was really pleased with it. So hopefully this will play out the same way. I am actually really looking forward to The Rock being in it though. Good to not see him in a man tutu and fairy wings.

I enjoy the "F & F" movies. "Tokyo Drift" is my guilty pleasure out of the series so far. Looking forward to seeing 5...but I think they absolutely need to end it with 6.

I'm happy with more sequels as long as they still feature the same actors/characters, and have decent plots, which can hold their own against the first, fourth, and hopefully fifth instalments.
