I saw this theatrically and once on DVD and that was enough for me. Besides I read about in the Bible at least a few times a year.

IMHO Gibson's best film is Apocalypto.

I'll be watching The Passion of the Christ on Friday, followed by The Ten Commandments with family and friends on Sunday. I still haven't decided what to watch on Saturday.

I've been watching Jesus films for the past few days in celebration of Easter. So far I've watched:

King of Kings
The Greatest Story Ever Told
The Miracle Maker
The King of Kings
The Last Temptation of Christ

Tonight I'm watching an obscure Spanish/English hybrid from the 1950s called The Redeemer. It's in English and was funded by Americans, but it was shot in Spain with Spanish actors. Because they apparently didn't speak English too well, they were dubbed over by Americans, but the American voice actors were forced to keep up with their odd speech patterns so that the synch was perfect. Basically, imagine the Spanish extras from King of Kings filling an entire film. It's an odd experience, but the production values and adaptation are pretty decent as is the acting from a visual standpoint.

Then for the rest of the week...

Thursday: Jesus Christ Superstar
Friday: The Passion of the Christ, The Passion BBC miniseries (maybe)
Saturday: Matthew, The Gospel of John
Sunday: Jesus of Nazareth

I'm saving the CBS Jesus miniseries for after Easter because I just recently purchased the rest of the films in that series by the same company (the first half of which aired on TNT, the others mixed between PAXTV and TBN). So I'm going to watch those all in order to lead to to the Jesus one.

Whew!

for fear of getting banned for discussing religion, I’m gonna make this short and to the point…..it's not the crucifixion that is celebrated @ Easter, it’s the resurrection.

Everything that happens in Passion of the Christ leads up to the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

and i seem to remember hearing/reading somewhere that Gibson based the violence on what the Romans did back in those days.

Right, so why watch a film that bathes in violence and torture? Just because it has a happy ending? I just don't see the relevance to watching this movie in order to celebrate the resurrection.

But hey, if you enjoy it, more power to you.

that's where the 12 years of catholic school come into play and can't be discussed here.

Nor can the iconography between the two divisions (the Catholics depict a guilt-inspiringly bruised-up Jesus on the Cross, while Protestant iconography depicts an empty Cross where Jesus isn't anymore) displaying the two fundamental interpretations of the ROLE of the Crucifixion...
Suffice to say, we know where this movie stands.

And before one MORE of my above posts gets bounced, too, I'll repeat my earlier Instant Netflix recommendations for "Last Temptation of Christ" and the National Geographic "The Gospel of Judas":

NG:TGOJ, if genuine, basically covers the exact same territory as Willem Dafoe and Harvey Keitel (ie. Judas being the "true" loyal one who understood Sacrifice, and Jesus personally choosing him to make the Betrayal), without the Scorsese direction or the headline scandal--
And the documentary even goes into historical detail about the process by which almost a dozen Gospels in 2nd-cty. Christianity were narrowed down to four "essential" ones.

(Hope this isn't too controversial to say, but y'know, sometimes documentaries are more informative than them mo'om-pitchers. )

The Resurrection happens because of the crucifixion. The reason Jesus went through that is the point (at least for Christians). And instead of sanitizing it like previous movie depictions, it depicts it more accurately and therefore is more humbling for those of us who have certain priorities in life.

Saw Passion once, may be way too intense for me to ever sit through it again...especially on Easter. I would probably go with King of Kings.

However, I didn't realize until after I booked it, I am going to be in Las Vegas on Easter Day. Having a hard time with the thought of gambling on that day.
