I'm not certain that I understand the thinking behind this release.
Ambersons, a superb film even in its truncated and re-shot mode, is still a masterpiece, and at 88 minutes, is a very easy HD mastering job. The inclusion of RKO 281 seems odd, as the film has been out on DVD for years. Having done a comparison of the original cutting continuities of Ambersons years ago, there is no doubt that in its original state, it would be one of the dozen or so finest films ever produced. The re-cuts and re-shoots alone make for a very interesting study. As I recall, there was a continuous shot going through the first major sequence at the Amberson mansion, with its introduction of the characters, that ran around five minutes without cutaways. That shot is now in bits and pieces. Painful to think about. Re: the potential that the footage might be found, this is quite a different situation from Metropolis, which was in heavy international release. AFAIK, there were only two 35mm nitrate prints of MA, one that was used as a studio cutting copy, the other shipped to Mr. Welles in South America. RAH |

Unless an incredible deal comes along, I'll just hold on to my 2-disc DVD until WB puts out a blu-ray without the extra junk.
This set would have been a must-buy if they had put Magnificent Ambersons and/or RKO 281 on a BD. What a boneheaded move! |

I really don't care to pay more than about $25-30 for either of these two (including TMA in the CK set). Maybe they'll hit a deal-of-the-day sale after release or something... I guess if CK+TMA appears in my Goldbox for $47.49 I'll preorder it and hope for another price drop...
