This is the first I've heard of this. What is the EAN# of this VHS?

Years ago I had a VHS and it said it was a Special Edition with deleted scenes added in. I never saw it in a store again. Wish I still had it now, but it mysteriously disappeared.

No, because MGM has shown Species III in HD. Just yesterday in fact. It looked better than a DVD upconvert to me. So, it's out there somewhere in HD. If they don't release a box set, then they should release them all separately at least.

I have the Species Box Set for DVD (with unrated versions), and also Species 4 Unrated on DVD. But, I'd really like them all on Blu.

Species was good, but the rest of the sequels were awful, especially Species III. I didn't know Species 4 even existed, and it couldn't be any better than the last two. There's a reason why Species III, and 4 are direct to videos productions!

Awful is in the eye of the beholder. I enjoy them.

Direct to Video has no baring on anything, i'd like them all on BR.

Default a real shame the transfer on blu

my personal ...i only like the first "Species",from then on it was sort of stretched and didn't capture the "feel" like that one.
But what a shame we have only this awfull transfer on blu,i cant say a good word about it,a friend bought it and i saw it there,he actually got rid of the blu after that,i really like this movie,it's well done, but now we cant buy it since its a crappy transfer, also i watch my blu's on a 90" screen (front projektion),so its even more obvious the faults etc....
i hope this gonna get another release soon as waiting for it untill its anniversay in 2015 for "a possible release" is way to long

Wow, another poor transfer to bluray, why am I not surprised. If this continues, DVD will be around for a very long time. The Prophecy, Footloose, Young Guns, and now Species all getting very poor transfers..this has got to stop!!!

I'll wait until this ends up in the $5 bin..not because of the movie(s) itself, but the poor workmanship by the distribution company..

You do realize this particular BD is a 5 year old release that they just happened to add a review for. Not much reason to blow steam about it at this point.

Did anyone else get this BD for free back in 07 or 08? I got this, S.W.A.T, The Devil's Rejects, P.O.T.C. & Full Metal Jacket when I bought a PS3 back in Dec 07. I always enjoyed the first Species. Especially since Michael Madsen owns this film.

I just joined this thread because this is a 5 yr old BD but at the end of the review it shows a 2nd version with the dvd inclusion. Did anything change or did they just throw in the DVD?

They just threw in the DVD, the BD on that is the same single-BD release. With the financial status that MGM has been in they're not likely to make any actual improvements on most of their catalogue releases. I wouldn't be surprised if they did a digibook release for the 15th anniversary with the same disc all over again (like Terminator...).

A 5 year old title, that still looks better than certain Universal catalogue titles,
that have been given 4.0 and 4.5s on this very site...

Looks better? A smidge perhaps. No great fan of Universal's catalogue titles, but Species' video rating is deserved imo while Universal's could certainly use some adjusting.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it's still a horribly dated transfer and the score is spot on.
Out of the three below, I know which one I prefer, though.

I bought this. I think the PQ could be better. But it is certainly not as bad as people say. Yes it is inconsistant butsome scenes really perk up to a 4 out of 5. Overall i would give it 3.5 out of 5. Not to bad for movie from 1995

And it is a fantastic action scifi horror movie

I really hope that someday MGM will released in Blu-ray the sequels separetly or in a box set, like they did for the DVD.

I really love those movies.
It will be a day 1 for me when they become available.

Maybe someone can help with an issue I found today.
I was in Best Buy and this is $4.99, so I decided it's time to upgrade despite the negative reviews (screens still look far better than my dvd). Anyway they had 2 copies, one from 2006 and the other dated 2008. They looked similar but slightly different. There are stickers over the UPC on both so I couldn't get those, but the old disc says PCM audio, the newer one said DTS Master HD. I'm assuming this is a misprint and it's the same disc in both cases, esp. as I can't find any other info on the web of a re-issue and all other specs and features are the same. Are there 2 different versions of this in the US? If so, which one is better?

EDIT: I just looked this up on dvdprofiler and it has both discs listed, although the UPC is the same as I can see the scans now. One is also listed as having DTS HD audio, but I think it's just someone copying cover info without checking it. If anyone has the re-issue (back has the now standard Fox spec grid, front doesn't have "Experience High Definition" banner on bottom, dated 2008 in small print) please see if it really has DTS audio. If so, I'm gonna take this back for it. I grabbed the original cover for now.
