That said, as much as the BD-J software annoys me when used badly, I do like when the discs do have the feature that asks if you want to continue where you last left off or start from the beginning. If they all had that, that would be fine, too. |

BD has two "menu" options BDMV and BDJ. If the disk was produced using BDMV (the simplest tool) it will automatically resume. If the disk is produced using BDJ it can't auto-resume because the player can't know what else it might need to know for the BDJ to work properly since BDJ could have a more complicated program behind it. Now if the disk uses BD-J then the studio could code in it an auto-resume feature or a pop-up. |

It is also not that realistic the BDJ cookie (not sure if it is the right term) could have other info in it as well or be there for other info and not for a resume Quote:
Personally what I would like as a better idea 1) disable resume bookmark at some point late in the film (for example once the credits start) 2) mark a film as watched and if it has been watched skip the BS (I like watching previews when I first watch that new film since it could lead me to something interesting but when I watched a film once and it is now several years later I really don't care about that film that came out on BD in 2006 if I was interested in it I would have already gotten it) 3) get rid of the pop up but add the resume in the menu if possible) (i.e. play movie , resume movie) and honestly, it would be nice if they added (next version/format) some global variables such as resume, language, audio preference..... that you could set up on the player and read by BDJ (or what ever is used). |

There are two types of resume features being discussed here, the resume feature which only applies to the current disc and is inherent with the DVD format and BDMV discs for Blu-ray's, and a resume feature which is strictly offered by the player itself supporting multiple discs which in every case that I have seen can be turned off which I always do. That being said, I'd like to focus on the first resume feature described which is what I'd imagine the OP is asking about. The DVD format by its very nature always allows for resuming where you left off with respects to the current disc in the player as there is no Java <insert expletive here> to get in the way. During playback if you press stop once, so long as it isn't while on a menu screen or "user operation prohibited" (UOP) screen playback will start from that point when pressing play again even if the player has been powered off and then back on again and so long as the disc isn't removed in the interim. After pressing stop once if you don't intend to remove the disc before pressing play again and don't want playback to resume from where you've stopped it simply press stop a second time and playback will start from the beginning instead. In fact, every DVD player that I've owned when pressing stop once will state that playback will resume from that point and to press stop again to have playback start from the beginning instead. If pressing stop where playback can't resume from that point a message is displayed stating this and that playback will start from the beginning. This is the feature I wish were part of the Blu-ray format without exception. Sadly it isn't thanks to BD-J which leaves any resume functionality up to the way the disc is authored, the BD spec or whatever not requiring that BD-J discs include an initial pop-up if applicable asking if the user wants to resume playback or not. Fortunately, though specific discussion of this is prohibited here it is simple enough to roll your own BDMV disc on BD-R in turn providing for that universal resume functionality offered by the DVD format and in the process removing all the crap one is forced to sit through each and every time just to get to the feature presentation or top menu.

My Sony SR-760HP player remembers the position of 5 different discs at a time. I think its a pretty cool feature although it may not sound very important. Lots of times i accidentally stop the playback and the resume feature is a godsend.
