I don't know, I guess so. I thought they were supposed to have a bigger role. But the director thing confused me sine Dokin just said the other day he was still directing it, but this new article is suggesting otherwise...It's kinda weird.

Smaller roles for Chase and D'Angelo might be the better way to go. Making them more of the focus raises serious 'been there, done that' possibilities.

I'm also half thinking Neil Patrick Harris could make a good Rusty. I know he's kind of polarizing but the guy is funny.

HORRIBLE BOSSES Writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to Direct VACATION Reboot

John Francis Daley is Ron Howard-ing right before our eyes. The former Freaks and Geeks child star successfully made the transition behind the camera with his screenwriting partner Jonathan Goldstein on the summer hit Horrible Bosses. Daley and Goldstein have also been developing a Vacation reboot for a couple years now. According to THR, the duo is now in talks with New Line to direct their script which serves as both a sequel and a reboot of National Lampoon’s Vacation series. The story centers on the adult version of Rusty Griswold, played by a 14-year-old Anthony Michael Hall in the original.

Hit the jump for what Daley and Goldstein said about their approach to Vacation.

When we spoke with the writers back in July, Daley explained their passion for the property:

Quote:
“New Line seems to be very excited about it, and we jumped at the chance to work on it, when New Line presented it to us, because everyone from our generation, and generations before and after us, are big fans of the Vacation franchise, whether it just be the first film or the sequels. We wanted to preserve that fondness that people have for it, but also create a new thing for the reboot.”
Goldstein added:

Quote:
“It has to be a movie that can stand on its own, if you aren’t overly familiar with the original, but also could pay homage to it, in some respect, so we tried to walk that line. It was a lot of fun to write. It’s a road movie, in the tradition of the originals. Tonally, it’s maybe a little more grounded and more Planes, Trains and Automobiles, we’d like to think. Right now, it’s one we’re excited about. Hopefully, that will be a project that will get going next year, most likely.”
A somewhat grounded road trip comedy that’s three parts Vacation, one part Planes, Trains and Automobiles, one part Horrible Bosses. I’m convinced. To Walley World!

Among other projects, the boys are also in development on Horrible Bosses 2. Their next project, Burt Wonderstone, will hit theaters sometime next year.

I'd love to see Anthony M Hall reprise his role as Rusty for this. Otherwise, I'd rather they not do it at all.

For me to care or see it, there are requirements;

1. Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo must have more of a role than just a stupid quick cameo

2. Anthony Michael Hall MUST reprise as Rusty.

3. Must be of Christmas Vacation caliber

4. There must be a road trip. A road trip with Rusty and Clark would be an amazing dynamic, great comedy can be had between a father and son. A "Vacation" movie without Chevy Chase is blasphemy. I've hated EVERY SINGLE national lampoons movie except for the "Vacation" series with Chevy Chase.

5. Requirement #1 again

We might finaly get the "Vegas Vacation" movie on Blu-ray with this reboot on the way! And I hope they add the short movie "Hotel Hell Vacation" on the disc!

I have "Christmas Vacation 2" on DVD but I don't really care for a Blu-ray Edition...!

Ed Helms Could Star in 'Vacation' Sequel/Reboot

Crank up “Holiday Road,” a new Vacation movie is on the way. The writers and directors are set, and it’s time to talk casting. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone) are writing and directing the reboot/sequel which will follow Clark Griswold’s now grown-up son, Rusty, as he takes his own family on a vacation just like dear old Dad. And while it would be near impossible for someone to fill Chevy Chase’s shoes, the front runner to do just that is Chase’s current NBC colleague, Ed Helms. Read more after the jump.

The news of the casting comes from the popular celeb blog Perez Hilton, who says Helms is “in the lead to take over the National Lampoon reigns” meaning he’s not yet signed, but is at the top of the list. Also, this film doesn’t seem to have a National Lampoon tie-in.

Helms, who got his big break as a correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, has blossomed into a major star in the last few years thanks to his role on NBC’s The Office and in The Hangover films. He’s on his way to top-line status too, with films like Cedar Rapids and Jeff Who Lives at Home gaining solid indie buzz.

Vacation though, as it stands, will not be a small movie. It’s set up at New Line, a division of Warner Bros., and you just know they’re hoping for another comedy franchise as The Hangover will likely end next year. Plus, the original Vacation spawned multiple sequels, thanks in large part to Chevy Chase’s massive star power in the 1980s. Helms has that kind of potential.

Rumor originally had it that this new Vacation would have Rusty taking his family to Wally World before it closed, much as happened in the original film, but there’s no word if that’s still the vacation destination. I really hope it is though.

Do you think Helms is ready to headline a remake/sequel like this?

Update: Ed Helms Has Not Been Approached To Star In ‘Vacation’ Remake

Update from Editor Peter Sciretta: Apparently this report has been confirmed false. Ed Helms tells The Playlist that while he is a big fan of the Chevy Chase classic Vacation, he doesn’t know where the rumors originated (Perez Hilton…) and has yet to be approached for the project:

“I have no idea where that bubbled up. I don’t know where that came from. It’s nothing I know of.”

has to be Anthony Michael Hall.

In all of the other sequels I found myself wishing the kid playing Rusty was him.

Ed Helms in Talks to Star as Rusty Griswold in VACATION

It looks as if Ed Helms will be playing Rusty Griswold in New Line’s Vacation after all. Rumors swirled earlier this year that Helms would be taking on the lead role in the continuation of the Vacation franchise, but when Steve asked him back in March if he was involved with the film he said he hadn’t had any conversations about the film. Horrible Bosses screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein signed on to direct their own script back in February, and now Helms has officially entered negotiations to star.

Though he denied having any conversations about joining Vacation back in March, when Steve told Helms he’d make a perfect fit to head up the Griswold family, he responded thusly:

“Well it could be, I suppose. I understand that project is afloat, but I don’t know where I fit into that right now.”

Variety now reports that Helms is in talks to star as Rusty Griswold, as the story finds him handling the misadventures of a family of his own. Producer David Dobkin told Steve that this Vacation isn’t an entire reboot of the series, it’s just Rusty’s story. If Helms’ deal closes, the plan is to start production early next year after the actor wraps The Hangover Part III and the upcoming season of The Office. In the meantime, New Line would like Daley and Goldstein to cut the script down a bit in order to lower the budget.

As Steve said earlier, Helms seems like the perfect choice to head up the new Vacation. It’ll be interesting to see what actors they surround him with to fill out the cast, but Daley and Goldstein are on a roll following Horrible Bosses. They’re working on Horrible Bosses sequel, scripted the magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone with Steve Carell and Jim Carrey, and they wrote the upcoming Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers.

Seems like a good choice for the role, although Im expecting it to be terrible. Horrible Bosses was kind of lame and forgettable. Love when Hollywood hands something that could potentially be good to some lame writers. It's amazing someone is paying these guys. Might as well just put Adam Sandler in this.

I suppose the powers to be believe Anthony Michael Hall is not bankable enough to let him lead this film. I agree with would be comedy writers these days..they don't have the classic touch and longevity that was the 80's comedy's. On the flip side the running gag in each sequel is the kids changed actors anyway so from that perspective it's normal......should be interesting if Chevy Chase and Beverly Di Angelo get asked back.........

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein Talk VACATION and SECRET HISTORIES; Reveal VACATION Starts Filming in June in Atlanta and New Mexico

The names John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will be popping up more and more frequently over the next few years, as the very funny scribes responsible for Horrible Bosses have been working on a number of projects in that successful comedy’s wake. I recently sat down with the screenwriters in Las Vegas at the press junket for the magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (which they wrote), and during the course of our conversation, the two talked about a few of their upcoming films.

While we’ll have the full interview available closer to the release of Burt Wonderstone, today we wanted to share what they had to say about the Vacation movie that they wrote and are directing, and the book series adaptation Secret Histories. The two revealed that filming on Vacation begins this summer and teased the return of some castmembers from the previous films, and also talked about “world building” with their rewrite work on Secret Histories. Hit the jump to read on.

Daley and Goldstein wrote the script for a new Vacation movie for New Line Cinema before subsequently signing on to make their feature directing debut with the film. Ed Helms is poised to play the grown-up Rusty Griswold, and I asked the duo when production might begin:

Quote:
John Francis Daley: We’re shooting in June in Atlanta and in New Mexico.

Jonathan Goldstein: Rusty Griswold is grown-up, and that’s Ed Helms. We’re casting the other parts now and it’s pretty exciting. I mean we’ve been directing shorts together, but this is our first feature. When we wrote the script we didn’t know we’d be directing it and then New Line said, “Do you wanna pitch yourselves to direct it?” And we were like “You bet!”

Daley: And then we looked at the script and it was like, “who wrote this piece of shit?”

Goldstein: We immediately turned into directors.
I asked the two if they had any plans to bring back some original castmembers from the previous films, and they responded affirmatively:

Quote:
Daley: We do [have plans to bring people back].

Goldstein: We’re in the process of having those conversations.
Another project that Daley and Goldstein recently worked on was a live-action/CG hybrid adaptation of Ari Berk’s book series Secret Histories. The duo performed a rewrite on the script and talked a bit about the status of the project:

Quote:
Daley: I think they’re going out to cast now with that.

Goldstein: That’s what they said. It’s what our agent keeps calling “world creation”… it’s creating this world about a nerdy guy who discovers a reason he’s such a nerd is that he’s part elf, and then just putting him in this secret order where it turns out he has potential to be a hero. So it’s a wish-fulfillment kind of thing.
Check back tomorrow for updates from Daley and Goldstein on Horrible Bosses 2 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, and look for our full interview next week.

Christina Applegate in Talks to Star Opposite Ed Helms in VACATION

Rusty Griswold’s wife has been found. Ed Helms is set to star as the grown-up version of the Vacation character in Horrible Bosses screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s upcoming sequel/reboot Vacation, and now the excellent Christina Applegate has entered talks to take on the New Line pic’s female lead. The story finds Rusty taking his own family on a road trip to Wally World, and THR reports that Applegate is poised to star as Rusty’s wife, described as “strong-willed” and “losing interest” in her husband.

During a recent interview with the scribes, Daley and Goldstein told me that they hope to bring back some of the franchise’s original castmembers in this new film (ie. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo). Applegate is a fantastic comedic actress and seems a swell fit to lead the pic opposite Helms. She is currently filming the sequel Anchorman: The Legend Continues. Production on Vacation begins this June in New Mexico and Atlanta.

Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Day Joining Ed Helms in Vacation Reboot

Quote:
Chris Hemsworth ("Thor" movies, upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Charlie Day ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," upcoming Horrible Bosses 2) are joining New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.' Vacation reboot, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Ed Helms will play Rusty Griswold in the comedy, while Christina Applegate will appear as his wife. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are set to make cameos. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein wrote the script and are making their directorial debut.

The new version of the vacation adventures of the quirky dad and his family will follow Rusty, who now has his own family misadventures on the road.

Hemsworth will reportedly play the husband of Rusty’s sister, Audrey (a role that has not been cast), while Day is expected to cameo as a river rafting guide.

Chris Bender, David Dobkin, Jeff Kleeman are producing. Filming is scheduled to start in September.

Audrey not yet cast? How about getting Juliette Lewis again? She's age appropriate. Chris Hemsworth, with her, though... wouldn't work. I may need to rethink things.
