Wanted new laptop, always get top of the line VAIOs.
The *only* optical drive that came in the AR190G was - Blu-ray burner. Bummer, huh? ![]() Since the laptop was designed around the BD drive, is/was marketed as a "Mobile Studio", and comes with several BD softwares(Roxio/Ulead), and is Full HD 1080©(1920x1200 screen) - with all the capabilities of a "normal" BD player plus portability... I figured WTH, ya know? Looked at ALL the other TOL laptops offered by ALL the other mfgrs. HP was HD DVD, Apples didn't have either, Toshiba... yeah. This one was far and above *ANY* other laptop in any of the local B&M stores. I like it! BDs play fine! On this screen or on a HDTV. Yes! It has a remote too! |

I am a big PC gamer but I wanted to try a game system. The PS3 just came out so I gave it a try because it also had the Blu-ray player in it. Started using it for movies instead of games and it also gave me an excuse to buy a new 1080p TV.
Now I am hooked. I have bought a 2nd BD player, another 1080p TV, new speakers and a new Sony AR570 laptop with Blu-ray. Make the madness stop! Last edited by dogger114; 09-26-2007 at 12:46 PM. |

a couple of reasons. one being disney/pixar exclusitivity for my kids. the second is the life of the machine. My PS one is over 9 years old. MY PS2 is over 6 years old. Sony's products last. That is why I bought a PS3. Great games and hd movies. who could ask for more

Ok, so I've been pretty decided on Blu-ray for a while now. Just looking at storage capacity gave me the initial idea that this was the way to go for me. But I didn't think I'd have a PS3 before I got a cheaper Wii.
Here's the thing -- I've had a 16×9 TV for a while now. No HDMI inputs, just DVI and component. I've mainly used it for DVD for the last few years. I finally got cable. A few HD channels included and I was even more hooked on HD than ever before. Sure, I may have had the wow factor the first time I saw HD images many many years ago (I believe the other bush was still president at the time...) in a demo of future technologies, and that image of a trip down a river in china may be forever in my mind, but it's nothing compared to the ability to take it home and study. So, Amazon had the 8 free with purchase. My PS2 was long burned out, so it just gave me another reason to upgrade. I did all I could to make sure I could get the PS3 ASAP for those 8 free movies. Now I'm spoiled again. Just like when I first got my DVD player 10 years ago. |

In my case, the Paramount/DreamWorks fiasco made me jump into the fracas a bit early... I was going to wait until Christmas to buy the Blu-ray equipment, but I guess, Christmas came early this year.
I was a Blu-ray supporter all along, but waiting for the prices to go down and standards to finalize... The PS3 that I bought is definitely a bargain considering the hardware and future expandability. My two cents... Bogdan |

Got into it on March 2007 with the PS3.
Bought the PS3 because at that moment in time, it was the more powerful system and I was prepared to wait a year for the big games. It came with a built in BD player and it basically served all the purposes I wanted it to serve at a comparitively cheap price rather than going piecemeal on various systems. Add to that I prefer the larger capacity of BD and it's future as a storage medium to boot coupled with the fact that any interactivity advantages HDDVD had would be nil within a year or so (hopefully that gamble will have paid off by March '08!)/greater studio and CE support and there we have it. No brainer. edit: Oh, and the free copy of Casino Royale didn't do any damage if you know what I mean. I wouldn't mind a few other freebies now and then to get me more hooked ![]() Last edited by docjan_uk; 09-26-2007 at 03:31 PM. |

Casino Royale was probably the trigger event. But it was a combination of factors that led up to that point: Disney exclusivity, general preference of Blu-ray titles vs available HD-DVD titles, the trend since the beginning of the year of more Blu-ray software sold than HD-DVD, and because we didn't have a game console getting the PS3 was like getting a next-gen game console for $300 and a Blu-ray player for $300.

What got me into bluray was my PS3. I knew I wanted a PS3 as soon as possible, and got one last december. Soon after I thought "wow I cant wait to see this on an HDTV" (I was playing on a 27" crt sdtv) so I saved up and got a 60" rp hdtv. After that I figured Id give bluray a try, and here I am now with about 25 movies.
I believe that my type of scenario willl be the most common, and the reason why the PS3 will win the format war. |

For me, I have been reading about this new format disc that could hold a lot more then a dvd (now known as blu-ray) since back in 2002 and wanted it back then. When I found out that the PS3 would have a blu-ray player built in it was set, as I wanted one of these for over a year before it came also. When the PS3 was released here in the States I was in Iraq, so everyone from my family (even my mother-in-law) was at a different store to try and get one for me. It didn't work out (my mother-in-law was the closest being 6th in line at a store that only had 5 PS3s.) So as soon as I get home from Iraq I dropped $850 for one on e-bay (I had lots of saved up money from not being able to spend any in Iraq for so long so it was no big deal.) I hooked it up to SDTV and thought, I can do better then this. So it was off to the store to pick up a 60" 1080p HDTV. Since then I have accumulated over 50 movies and have not looked back, just loved every minute of it.
