Just finished watching this. Really had no expectations or really any pre conceived notions. As long as you can let the scientific non-realism go to the wayside, you should be good to go. I really loved this movie! Wonderful acting with an extremely thought provoking theme. Great ending too!

Just picked this up at the local Walmart for $19.99. Question, is this another one of the Fox 'blu-ray or bust' releases? I like this strategy because it corners the market, but they should try it on a more high-profile release. Rise of the Planet of the Apes would have been a good start

What does that mean, exactly? Is that referring to one of the combo-pack-only releases where there's no separate DVD release?

Yes they did, but that was also a pretty low-key-independent release (even though it starred Brad Pitt and Sean Penn). They should really try it with a blockbuster. Follow the Disney method and release the DVD only version a month or two later.

Even though I love Blu-ray I think it would be crazy for them to release a big movie in a Blu-ray/DVD combo only. Not everyone has Blu-ray. Kind of unfair to people who still get DVD's. Hell, I thought it was stupid of them to do this with smaller releases too, like Tree of Life and Another Earth.
Anyway, just watched this film. BEAUTIFUL! I absolutely loved this! I loved that the sci-fi aspect took a backseat to the human drama, which, in my opinion, was the most interesting part. Brit Marling is so fantastic in this and it's sad that this film and her performance will be overlooked during award season. Also award-worthy is William Mapother in his supporting turn. I rarely blind buy new movies, but I am so glad I did this one. It's wonderful and sadly, quite underrated. One of the year's best! On a side note, I would have liked the "We'd have a very clean house" deleted scene to have been included in the movie. The others were interesting to watch but understandably excised. A |

Will be seeing this tomorrow. I was nervous about the blind buy, but I just thought there was something about the movie that seemed like it belonged in my collection and that I'd like it. And I'm very aware it's not a Sci-Fi film.
I hope that I'm not disappointed. I know I felt the same way about Melancholia, which doesn't get much love either, only more because of Dunst and Von Trier, but hardly mainstream appreciation, and it was brilliant in my opinion. |

I like this move, so long as the prices go lower on them, and they all come with slips, as the only two I've noticed from 20th Century Fox have. On release day, Tree of Life was $22.99, and Another Earth at other places I've seen for ~$25-ish. I don't mind paying $22.99 for quality, as Tree of Life has an amazing transfer true to source, but Another Earth being upconverted from a low budget, 720p source should be $20 max, and first week sale of ~$15. Just my two cents. |

I checked out a... *cough* non- Blu-ray copy *cough... and was thoroughly disappointed with much of the film. Direction had promise, as some shots were great (all shown in trailer), but most of the others times felt amateur-like and pretentious-- I can understand making a shot last longer by a few seconds after a situation to show character in deep thought, but some of these were like 20 seconds long and it shifted the pace and tone of the movie. Acting wasn't as great as I expected despite Brit Marling being a good-looking girl, but looks can only take you so far [Show spoiler] Despite that being on first viewing, my girlfriend still wants to watch it, and I'm forgiving and willing to watch it on a good copy. I'll drop a post if my opinion changed any. |

The movie is a huge homage to Kielowski films (especially Blue and Double Life). If you like those films, you should be on board.

I don't think she was feeling sorry for herself at all. She felt awful for what she did. I almost felt like she wanted to be punished. She felt like she deserved whatever she got. There's a deleted scene where her father set up a college interview for her and he brought her to it. They knew what she had done and were fine with that. They could have gotten her in but while walking with the tour guide she turned around and left. [Show spoiler]
