Wow those guys over at AVS welll...... I don't really know what to say about that whole thing.
"Our format is wining even if we sell less cause ours costs less to make and therefor more profitable and hence a better business model. So there take that blu-ray!"

I'm no rocket scientist but that argument makes no sense to me. Wouldn't they (HD-DVD & Blu-ray) set the price point of the media so that they made money on the discs regardless of manufacturing costs?

This is very great news but i just saw on bestbuy.com that there a good amount of hd-dvd movies from paramount that are on sale like for instance Aeon Flux, Tomb Raider, Dreamgirls, Disturbia, Norbit, Mission Impossible 3, etc. They were about $3 to about $5 cheaper then normal

Absolutely hilarious how they can never admit defeat even when it's looking them squarely in the fase.

For me, Paramount needs to be very concered. Their sales numbers are staggeringly low. I am pretty sure that Bram Stoker's Dracula will Sell more than MI:3. I am almost certain that any of blu's independent horror classics Dawn, Day of the Dad and Evil Dead 2, will sell better than most if not all of Paramount's titles. Paramount was just trying to tread water until Transformers.

Everybody should go buy Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and Evil Dead 2. Classics.

Moonphase,

They put those things on sale becuase they don't want to be left having to keep warehouses full of it next year when it's over. Look at the efforts they make to not have to keep the hardware.

These days, you just can't throw pallets of HD DVD players in a dumpster becuase people know it's toxic waste and someone has to pay to recycle the stuff.

Toshiba recently gave away 150 HD DVD players with purchase of the Matrix for this very reason. When it's over toshiba doesn't want to have to pay to recycle this stuff.

I wouldn't be surprized if the Paramount deal was crafted for this very reason,.. give us more time to pass this stuff into the hands of the users before we have to pay to recycle it ourselves.

Oh no...Norbit and Nacho Libre are on sale. Blu ray is going down for sure now. Come on. This is classic sell at loss. Those movies weren't selling. They are cutting the prices just to get them out of stock. Lay off the FUD panic button.

no i hope they do..this is about Paramount trying to prop up the lack of disc sales for HD DVD compared to BLU-RAY. let them buy the DISC's because in the end the very fact that in almost 2 years on the market HD DVD has not even sold 1 million install base of HD DVD players..let alone selling in the MILLIONS of HD DVD disc's Blu-Ray on the other hand Continues to sell strong not just in the MOVIE market but also the Blu-Ray game's Market for SOFTWARE also has been selling good :
example I love this response to the news about DISC SALES at AVS:

Firemaster,

Did you look at the numbers on the chart? The rough average difference between the titles is roughly 3000 discs over 8 months. That amounts to 350 to 400 discs per month.

This is supposed to represent a domination of BD over HD? This is what BD is claiming amounts to a "winning" format? This is what BD is bragging about?

I look at those numbers and I think HDM is in trouble. If they can only sell a total of roughly 250K discs in 8 months, and that is not good.

NO THIS IS WHAT BLU-RAY BDA is bragging about, whats not good is you ignore TOTAL DISC'S THAT ARE SOLD FOR EACH FORMAT
A HD DVD disc sold is a HD DVD disc sold..a Blu-Ray Disc sold is a Blu-Ray Disc sold.

want to see something very funny:

this ONE, a single uno playstation 3 game on Blu-Ray in just
(one month) has sold more disc's that HD DVD has been able to sell in all of near 2 years and look what game it is:

PS3 MADDEN NFL 08 336.2K
that is just for the Month of AUG BY ITSELF..at $60.00 a pop...but yet the HD DVD spin is were winning....

Wow, some pretty awful sales numbers, for both formats, on that list.

Still, it's interesting the BDA presented the specific comparison on Paramount titles.

Well, we're only looking at the Paramount numbers. And I believe they suffered on Blu-ray due to the lack of HD audio support. Just look how often people reject purchasing a title if it doesn't have HD audio.

Flags/Iwo Jima is clear example of the problem. Flags was spectacular PQ, but lacked the audio. Iwo Jima had spectacular audio, but suffered from Warner's soft VC-1. Blu-ray fans go wild when both video and audio are there.

We can also conclude that catalogue resales are going to be VERY difficult this generation. People may be satisfied with their DVD. And these numbers represent the videophiles!

Notice, the top five, representing 1/3 of BD unit sales, are new releases.

So, what we can see is: NEW RELEASES WILL RULE THE WAR

Hmmm, big advantage to Blu-ray.
