well I have no doubt that the $40 price tag is going to be continuing topic in every single thread made regarding a TT release. I don't think there's any way around that. The fact is that any anger should really be directed at crappy Sony imo because they are the studio that owns the Columbia film library and the studio that refuses the release these classic catalogs on blu-ray--the format they founded. I mean back in 2006 I never would have thought in a million years that Sony wouldn't be releasing The Big Heat on blu-ray, but that is the reality in 2011. It's a sad situation for cinema fans across the world when a stone cold classic like that is considered not worth releasing on bd by the major studio that holds the rights. So I for one am happy as hell that TT is making it happen because it would be an absolute travesty if that film noir masterpiece wasn't ever put out on blu-ray.
I just don't know what else there is to say about this situation as far as the price goes. If you want the movie on blu-ray and you want more Columbia classics to come out in the future, you need to somehow find a way to support this release. end of story. Many catalog titles aren't selling at budget prices either. We're seeing catalog titles being licensed out because to the big studios, they're just not worth the time, effort, and money to be released.

That argument about obscurity & price could be made for tons of titles, but plenty of less mainstream titles are and will get released as the format ages. DVD was the same way. If it wasn't profitable it would never happen. I just don't buy this whole defense that if it wasn't for TT these titles would never get released on Bluray. Especially at a time when more and more independent studios are releasing extremely obscure movies at decent prices. And in the case of Fright Night. Someone would of released it eventually no doubt. It would of been a great match for Blue Underground.
In the end I support any independent studio releasing high quality titles. I said before in the earlier thread about TT that if they ever want to seriously compete they are going to have to rethink their pricing. Or at least offer free shipping. Heck they still haven't sold out of the Egyptian. I think that has more to do with pricing then actual quality or desirability. I know of quite a few people who wanted it, but were not willing to fork out that much. It appears Twilight has listened and lowered the pricing which is good. 34.00 is a lot easier to stomach then 39.00 for a single title. Every one of Twilight's releases and threads will have people in it complaining about pricing. Then Twilight's defenders will ride into the discussion as their saviors saying 'If you want something bad enough you should be willing to pay for it and not complain'. I reserve the right to both pay and complain. The current price offered for Mysterious Island is a step in the right direction. Add in Free Shipping and maybe a few digital coupons from time to time and I'll be joining the defenders. Maybe a decent sale will get rid of the surplus 'The Egyptian' in stock. |

well it might not have been TT that released them, but whatever "other" entity would have had to do the same thing--license them from Sony.
So the end result would have been the same. that entity would have probably priced the bds about the same, maybe a little lower, who knows. the bottom line is that Sony owns the rights to a massive catalog of films that they are unwilling to release themselves on blu-ray because they don't think it is worth it. why can't people understand that? Do you think we are happy that another distributor has to "rescue" these classic films in order for them to get a blu-ray release at all? |

I'm not a fan of the price. And the $40 price tag The Egyptian has is indeed why I have not yet purchased it. I always think to myself, "I'll put the money aside this week to buy it." But then I spend that money on 4 or 5 cheaper catalog titles.

Just like 'The Egyptian' Sony had already paid for a proper transfer. Which means Sony figured it was worth the investment. The contract allows Twilight to pay Sony some money, release the films and later Sony can opt to rerelease the title at a later date. Allowing Sony to focus on releasing other titles and still turn a nice profit from Twilight's Release. They could have just as easily been licensed by Criterion, Shock Factory, Blue Underground, etc and many of the other Bluray studio's out there.
The fact is had Fright Night not had such a large following and had Criterion bought the rights and released it at a decent price with no limit there would be no one here complaining or having to defend Twilight. Obviously Twilight struck a good contract with Sony that increases their profits. Face it had Fright Night released under the Sony Pictures label it probably would have been a 14.99 title at release. Look at The Caine Mutiny that just released at 14.99 from Sony. This deal probably makes Sony more money for less cost. Especially since Sony is dealing with only one retailer. Also by contract Twilight can't force Sony to buy back unsold stock like all the other retailers can do. In the end Sony gets a lump sum immediately without having to worry about pressings, shipping's, advertising, returns etc. The high price limited edition approach is a marketing scheme. Obviously if people think its rare and limited they are willing to pay more for it. There's nothing wrong with that. My only concern is if other studio's follow suit. It would be very bad for Blurays in general IMO if more and more titles became limited edition. It would practically pass the torch to streaming which does'nt have these kind of limitations. One of which being if you don't watch and read Bluray news all the time you may miss your favorite titles and worse never even know they were released already. +1. I paid $18 for Jason and the Argonauts and $35 for the Harryhausen box set of four films, but there's no way I am paying $40 for Mysterious Island.

Man I want this title. I can't tell you how much I watched this on TV as a child. That $40 price tag does give one the willies though.
I guess my way of this making this somewhat palatable is to think of this as a European Criterion Import with less swag. Yeah, I think that works. ![]() |

Pre-Ordered If you don't want the movie and whine about the price that is fine, but I'm sick of hearing a bunch of people mad because they aren't getting cheap prices for a high quality blu-ray. Yes I love paying low prices for movies and catalog titles, however we get a bit spoiled every once in a while you need to just decide do you really want this title, you willing to let it pass you by? If you can do without it then that is fine. Just don't moan over the ones who are excited and don't mind sacrificing a bit to get the title in HD.
I'm not rich and I just had car repairs done today near $2,500.00 to my car I am broke! I have canceled a bunch of upcoming pre-orders. I just placed my MYSTERIOUS ISLAND pre-order NO WAY IN HELL I will let that title pass me up. Sorry maybe I recall to purchasing a LaserDisc Box Set for The Lion King for $124.99. Yeah 40.00 for a well done Blu-Ray I'll take it. Not everything is going to be $10.00 at Walmart. So If you don't like the price move on nothing to see here. |
