Maybe this is just me, but if the storyline consist of a brother type situation, it sounds a little like The Boondock Saints.

Personally, I'm against this film being remade. A classic action film that could easily attract modern day action fans without having to spin a modern interpretation out of the storyline shouldn't be touched. And I'm not against remakes either, I just feel the films that are picked and chosen to be remade should be a more select group, not any film coming from a different decade that someone views as being profitable. The Crazies, nice remake of a film that was perfect for a remake, Red Dawn being remade, great original film, but unnecessary remake.

NOTE: He was 53 when he did this movie. Talk about In Shape!!

that's a great movie!!! as has already been said--- I hope we get lots of Bronson titles on blu-ray.... I'm a big fan!

Joe Carnahan Drops ‘Death Wish’, Eyes Tony Scott’s ‘Narco Sub’

Joe Carnahan has been adding projects to his slate left and right since 2011′s The Grey, but he’s now dropped one of them from his schedule. The filmmaker has abruptly exited Death Wish, Paramount / MGM’s remake of the 1974 thriller starring Charles Bronson.

That doesn’t mean his slate is getting any less crowded, though. Carnahan is now reportedly circling Narco Sub, the drug smuggling thriller that Tony Scott was set to helm before he passed away. Hit the jump to keep reading.

Deadline‘s source reports that Carnahan left over disagreements about casting the lead role. Carnahan has long said that he wants Frank Grillo, whom he worked with on The Grey, for the lead. Last year, he even tweeted that he’d written the role with Grillo specifically in mind. However, Paramount / MGM were apparently pushing for Bruce Willis. Needless to say, this likely means Grillo is out of the project as well.

Carnahan’s departure represents a major setback, but it likely won’t spell the end of the project altogether. The film had already been kicking around for years before he joined last January; Sylvester Stallone was even attached to direct and star at one point. No doubt Paramount / MGM will continue trying with a different, perhaps more pliable director.

Still, it’s a shame that they were unable to make it work with Carnahan. The director has said he had some good ideas about how to update the premise. He and Grillo previously revealed that the new version would hew closer to what he thought Sidney Lumet’s original vision might have been, before he was replaced on the ’74 version by Michael Winner. Not to mention, Grillo seems like a far more interesting choice than the ubiquitous Willis.

But Carnahan should have no trouble moving on. He’s currently shooting the A&E pilot Those Who Kill and has a few options already for his next feature outing. That includes the Jason Blum-produced Stretch, the comic book adaptation Undying Love, and, now, Narco Sub. The latter has a script by David Guggenheim and centers around, you guessed it, drug-running subs.

Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado will direct the remake of “Death Wish,” starring Bruce Willis.

The Israeli directing team helmed the 2013 black comedy “Big Bad Wolves,” which was an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival.

Paramount released the original “Death Wish,” starring Charles Bronson, in 1974 with Michael Winner directing and Dino De Laurentiis producing. The $3 million film was a major success, grossing $22 million at the box office.

Former MGM co-chairman Roger Birnbaum is producing the new project. He was a producer on the “Rush Hour” franchise, “Bruce Almighty” and 2009’s “Star Trek” before joining with Spyglass partner Gary Barber to take over MGM in 2010. Birnbaum returned to producing in 2013.

Joe Carnahan, Dan Gilroy and Graham Yost have worked on the script for the remake. The 1974 original was based on the Brian Garfield novel about vigilante Paul Kersey, who goes after criminals when his wife is murdered and his daughter is left catatonic after being sexually assaulted during a home invasion.

Bronson starred in four “Death Wish” sequels, concluding with his final film in 1994, “Death Wish V: The Face of Death.”

Keshales and Papushado debuted with “Rabies” prior to “Big Bad Wolves.” They are repped by WME.

The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

I'll be honest and say I'm not too keen on the first Death Wish (I've never seen the sequels). It felt too much like NRA propaganda to me as opposed to actually telling a compelling and thrilling vigilante story. I've never read the novel but hopefully this remake will differentiate itself a bit.

Default Death Wish remake with Bruce Willis

Apparently this is happening, for some reason.

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount and MGM are setting Big Bad Wolves helmers Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado to direct Bruce Willis in Death Wish, the revamp of the Charles Bronson vigilante franchise that is adapted from the Brian Garfield novel. Production will begin by the summer, I hear. Paramount released the original 1974 hit in conjunction with the Dino De Laurentiis Company, and MGM ended up with those rights, which is why the studios are teamed. Roger Birnbaum is producing.

Nothing is going to beat the original Death Wish, starring the late: Charles Bronson.

Too me Deathwish is era specific w/ the crime rates of NYC. That plays as much of a role ...imo. Modernizing it is just another Hollywood revenge flick. NYC is not like that anymore.

I'd be happy if it was half as entertaining as DEATH WISH III.

But it won't be...

I wasn't happy when Stallone announced that he was going to do a Death Wish remake and I am certainly not happy with Willis doing it now. He just doesn't have the enthusiasm to play any character now.

yeah, sometimes some of these decisions on what films or franchises to remake makes my head spin. Especially when there is no reason or need for it.

They could move it to Chicago, although now it's all just shooting, shooting, shooting. BORRRRIIIINNNNGGGG! At least 70's NY had many different unique crimes all going on at once.

this quality of the original (era specific) shines most in the brilliant jazz/funk Herbie Hancock score, the remake most likely will have some turd-ish throwaway hip-hop soundtrack, maybe sample some of the original breaks

Maybe Willis should focus on making a decent finale to the Die Hard series before mucking around with somebody else's franchise.

Surprisingly, I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. Willis is age-appropriate for the role, and, you could, actually, remake Death Wish with little disrespect, because the premise is so raw and vague in the first place. And, considering that it has to be made for adults in the first place, I'm willing to give the production the benefit of the doubt, for now.

I know he and Fox will do that shortly, but honestly, that franchise is dead. Both the fourth, and fifth films were poor, the latter being worse, and the ideas that are swirling around the proposed sixth film are garbage. Bruce Willis is John McClane, and not for one second do I want to see a younger actor playing the part in the 1970s, as has been suggested. In fact, I have little desire to fill in McClane's past at all, especially considering that his present is always a mess. Personally, I never gave a damn about McClane's kids, and their appearances always reeked of a Hollywood studio trying to appeal to a younger generation. The only way I would watch a sixth is if it was "small universe" like the first film, and featured McClane making peace with his wife (they absolutely need Bonnie Bedelia back), and either retiring or preferably, being killed off, to make the inevitable reboot less likely. Since I strongly doubt any of that will happen, I'm pretty much done with Die Hard franchise, and I wouldn't blame Willis if he did inevitably walk away from it, too, Having said that, though, I suspect he'll do it for the paycheck, like the last two films.
