Question If the HD-DVD camp don't consider PS3 as a BD player

Why did MS consider it necessary to produce their HD-DVD add on if they felt gamers don't watch movies It really is short sighted by the other side.

I brought this up before but everytime I do the HD-DVDers refuse to answer. Go figure.

They always believed it was a huge threat but they can't openly admit that.

I know alot of XBox fans keep slagging off the PS3 because they say there are no games available and they are being used as BD players..... and then they put on there HD-DVD caps and the PS3 is a games console and gamers don't watch movies. Talk about spin-docters.

Could be the best if not one of the best thats for sure. With HDMI 1.3 and hopefully soon profile 1.1 compatibility and DTS-HDMA this will be one of the most advanced and cheapest BD player you will be able to get, best bang for your buck thats for sure.

is that Sony's startegy, put Blu ray into PS3, at the start focus on BD to become a sucess through the PS3, then pump out games to give it even more of an added bonus? lol that's pretty cool TBH and I think it's working.

The fastest Blu-Ray player out there. Period. The most future proof, if such notion makes sense to you. Easily upgradeable.
Excellent SD DVD upscaling, excellent PQ and AQ.
The weak points to some people are:
- absence of multi-channel analog audio outputs (only stereo RCA available).
- potential inability to bitstream DTS-HD and DTS-MA due to reported HDMI transmitter limitation (I have not seen this officially confirmed though).
There is a lot of mis-information about PS3 primarily spread by X360 fanatics and Sony-haters.
Personally, if I were in a position to change one thing about PS3 I would only modify the form factor to make it look like a HT piece of equipment. Other than that, a fantastic machine.

Overall, probably the most advanced player out there as far as power and ability to support future functions and the only Blu-ray player that can also play SACDs. I can give it only 1 failure is that it does not have 5.1 analog outputs which is a standard on every other stand alone player that I know of. This to me is reason I don't own it but for most it may not matter.

As far as the debate over numbers of players and to count the PS3 or not is a lot of crap. The unknown is what percentage of PS3 players as there are 3 type of owners:

Pure gamers and don't own or known it plays Blu-ray movies
Use it for gaming and Blu-ray movies
Purely use it for Blu-ray moves.

I would guess the 2nd category is the largest. I know people that use it just for movies though.

Somewhere in this mixture, maybe 30-50% of the PS3 owners are using it for movies. It would be good if a detailed study would be conducted so they could highlight that how it is used but I think most people agree it is having an impact. If only 25% use it for movies, then I believe it would still be the largest used player out there for any HD format.

It really doesnt matter what it's used for........It's still a BD player and should be counted as such........I'm sure XBOX is counted as an HD player.

I think they understand a percentage of 'gamers' watch movies. The HD-DVD drive allows people to buy into the HD format for little money. And not sure that MS considered it necessary, they saw it as a money making opportunity. They produced a product they though would sell.

If someone already has a 360 and wants to watch HD-DVD movies, the add-on would seem the best choice. Aren't they only around $170 plus some free movies?

It's always been a belief of mine that MS came out with a HD-DVD add on drive it only show half support in HD-DVD. That way if the market changes and MS wants to they can release a BD add on drive for Xbox 360 without too much hassle.

If they really wanted to fully support HD-DVD they would have released the Xbox Elite with a HD-DVD drive inside and a free Kong movie!

Or better yet come out with games for the HD-DVD to actually show more of a use for it than just watching movies!

When I was first shopping around for a new system PS3 won me over mainly due to the dual use out of it, now soon three or more with DVR for TV!

I love my PS3 and it gets plenty of both Game and Blu-Ray time, I know a lot of Xbox fanboys that are always criticizing it, but just don't know how great it is 'cause they refuse to buy one.

It was a matter of putting out a product sooner and beating Sony's PS3 into the market. The same growing pains that the PS3 has been going through for the past year with a minimum number of available next-generation games the 360 has already gone through. It's a simple fact that the more time a popular system is out there, the more games will be available.

Also does anyone think that a multi-hundred dollar gaming system with a 1 in 3 failure rate is a well designed product that was ready to go to market? It was rushed plain and simple...

My opinion is that MS's plan was that they would either use the multi-disc option for high gig games eventually moving to downloads and online play with their systems. (Remember MS believes all of our futures are on the net and everything should be online and downloadable.) MS wants their consoles and software to be the home media interfaces for the future. When the decision makers at MS realized the PS3 would actually do what MS wanted the 360 to do, only better, and offered something their system didn't - watching HD Media - a stopgap of a HD-DVD external drive was put out. After all, they couldn't support Blu-ray because that would be aiding the competition.

Microsoft's vision of a downloadable future has not changed. They support HD-DVD to counter Blu-ray but only just enough so that neither side wins. If MS wanted to, they could introduce a newer model of the 360 with a HD-DVD drive in it - but they haven't. Doing so would run counter to their vision and possibly drive up the costs of their consoles they want to achieve it with.
