I saw the movie last night (DVD version) and I am sorry to say that I did not find it to be a good movie... The story was a mess in my opinion and some scenes where overplayed, and

It might be just me though... From what I have heard this has been a hit. So do not take my word for it.

Well i've just got done watching and I must admit as soon as I saw this movie was coming to blu ray and after reading the synopsis and seeing the imdb rating I was sure I would like it a lot but after sitting through it I must agree with Phesstve in his/her review of the movie.
It wasn't as funny or smart as I expected infact it was quite the opposite both predicatble cliched and overall lacking in any singular attribute that could have made it one to remember. All the performances were rather overblown and the music throughout the movie seemed to want to force the audience to feel emotion ie happyness, sadness etc. and another point to mention is the rather crude continuous references to masterbation ![]() The movie started off poor but got better towards the middle before doing an epic nose dive towards the end, overall i'd say it was average but I must admit I was quite disappointed. Obviously all opinions are subjective but i'd suggest 'renting' this one instead of buying it to see if you like it first. If anyone is interested in a real quality Taiwanese movie with similar themes (minus the sex references) i'd suggest you check out the criminally underrated 'Hear Me' which is by far my favourite Taiwanese movie of the last couple of years. |

Obviously i'm not sure if our tastes matchup but the movie itself was different from what I had expected, hopefully my fairly negative review lowers expectations and leaves everyone appreciating the movie more. I mean it wasn't a bad movie and it wasn't boring either but the type of reviews I saw it getting I was naturally expecting soo much more then the borderline (unfunny) sex comedy drama that it turned out to be.

![]() Secret is a nice movie but don't get your hopes too high, give it a rent first before purchasing it too just in case, I'd give it 7/10 (and it's romantic drama so no cheesy comedy or sexual references etc) ![]() |

To get the most out of this movie, I think you need to have lived in Taiwan or Hong Kong, just so you know the school life and have some understanding of the language. Based on a book, its director is in fact its original author, and the story is autobiographical. It's about the nostalgia of high school friends, first crush, and unrequited love, and the few funny or moving moments are derived from its naturalistic dialog which doesn't translate well over subtitles.
That said, I agree with most that the movie is run of the mill. It's merely competent from a technical standpoint, and the script could have used more work. Audiences in Hong Kong connected to it in an emotional way, though, and the movie shattered the all-time box office record there. If people are looking for an alternative then I'd suggest Taiwan's other big hit, Seediq Bale, which has its own faults but is interesting for its historical depiction of an aboriginal uprising against their Japanese colonial oppressors. I too really enjoyed "Secret". It is definitely an average movie, but the piano playing scenes bump it up for me. "Secret 2" is supposed to come out this year sometime as well.
I just watched "Help Me Eros" last night, another Taiwan film, but a lot more "mature" then these ones being mentioned haha. Another one to check out if you are interested is the Hong Kong film, "Echoes of the Rainbow" |

Secret is one of my all time favorite. The combination of romantic and mystery make the flick is incredible. The film is enriched with stunning scores and lovely scene. Jay Chou is one of intelligent musical. The scores that he picked for the film are modern classical music. I hope everyone will try this film.
