+1!!!

I'm curious to know too! If you buy a "previously viewed movie" from a place like GoHastings, is it possible that its the "RENTAL" (stripped down) version, or would they have to indicate "RENTAL" in the description? Basically, are they mutually exclusive terms?

Since most of the Blockbuster stores around me are closing down, I don't have to worry about knockoff rental versions and I never buy from Hastings either. If I rent, I go to Family Video where the rentals have the extended and unrated versions despite the price of their new releases ($3.49) and semi-new releases are 2.09 and much older releases are $1.

I always thought that the special rental discs were done to discourage pirating of rented discs, especially in terms of not giving lossless audio.

That may change now that LionsGate owns Summit, though.

No, the studios decided to do this so that people would be more apt to go out and purchase the version with all of the extra features.

Fox has special rental discs that block playback of the extra features.

I go through about 6-8 Netflix rental per week. Of those 6-8, easily half are of the Godforsaken "rental copy" variety! Of those rental copies, I purchased ZERO...of the 3-4 that were not rental copies, I purchased 1-2 per.
I hate rental copies, and hope they go the way of the dinosaur sooner rather than later!
