I wouldn't mind getting this. They've shown it on Film4 before but it's usually midnight and there's no way I'm staying up until 4am to finish it off

I'd be quick as they might not keep the store up, or might take certain titles off, such as the newer releases. I bought so much from there that they sent me a DVD of Turtles Are Surprisingly Fast Swimmers, signed by the director and the lead actress. Now that's good service

I'm trying to convince myself not to buy the posters as I still have the three MOC ones to frame and I have nowhere to put them, or the spare cash to frame them

According to DVD Beaver's review, the US release from Olive Films has non-removable (burned in) subtitles.

And Dolby TrueHD Stereo audio instead of the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track found on the UK and Japanese releases.

I contacted TFW about when Kotoko and Tetsuo will be put up on their online store because I already plan on buying them but theres a few dvd's I wanted to buy from their store since they're twice as cheap there than on amazon, thehut, zavvi etc, and I got this response from Adam:

Both of them will not go up on the store until November and then will only be available to ship throughout the UK.

We are closing the store down at the end of this month and will keep it closed throughout October as there will be no-one here to process any orders, plus for pre-order and new-releases titles we prefer that people go through Amazon or Play.com as the number of pre-orders of new releases helps us sell new products in the future.

So I just went ahead and placed my order on those dvds. If you're from outside the UK and you want something from their online store, I suggest you get in there soon.

And no special features, plus the image looks weaker and washed out. The UK release is also much cheaper. I do prefer the cover art for Olive's release though. Not going to lie. But that's the only thing it really has going for it and hardly justifies the huge price tag.
I'm really happy with the UK release which has almost 2 hours worth of special features and looks and sounds great

Comparing this release with the German disc on Caps-A-Holic, I think the German disc has better grain, less DNR -- but there's a color difference. Anyone know if the golden tone is proper, or the cooler look of the German disc?

I wonder if we'll ever see a subtitled release of the extended miniseries cut?

I wonder if this has a shot a remaster one of these days or perhaps too niche.

Well, the extended cut was called a “4K remaster,” and it really can’t be. 99% is HD camera footage, and 1% 16mm. Granted, the 16mm shots can be re-scanned at a very high resolution and look great, but when the rest of the film is HD camera footage, it’s a bit more complicated.

I’d love to see another stab at it as well if something better can be produced, but I just don’t see it happening. Granted, I haven’t seen the extended version, so maybe it’s better overall, but knowing how it was shot, it seems unlikely.

I watched the extended version but would definitely stick with the theatrical for future viewings. Most of the extra footage is in the deleted scenes on TWF’s release anyway.

Curiously, despite TWF’s claim at the time that their version is the only uncensored version, a couple of the long shots in the scene in question are still censored, whereas the Olive release is completely uncensored. The Olive version has one line missing from the subtitles in the middle of the film though, and of course doesn’t have the DVD of special features that TWF has. TWF doesn’t subtitle the end credits song. Olive’s subs aren’t removable. Both look about the same in terms of PQ. I’ve watched both multiple times and generally go for the Olive now.

I feel like the movie could looks slightly better, maybe by boosting the contrast or something. The blacks aren’t black enough on the current release I think. A more definitive release in an Arrow LE-style packaging including both cuts would be possible and welcome and pretty sweet, but the existing releases are fine really.

Just got the uk Blu-ray on eBay and I have both glitches on my copy. Annoying and sad to see that this wasn’t fixed.
