I was kinda against the Avengers releasing a "Directors cut" in theaters until i totally realized after some thought that The Avengers would have been all alone at Number 2 after next week (600 mil+) if the Titantic never released their 3D Cash Grab, So by all means Disney. Go ahead and make that money. I'll be there.

Ahem, i think you meant extended cut. The theatrical is confirmed as the directors cut by Joss Whedon himself

Box Office Report: 'Avengers' Crossing $600M Domestically.

the-avengers-film-still.jpg

The Disney and Marvel superhero tentpole will reach the milestone on Tuesday; its worldwide gross is now $1.44 billion.

Quote:
Joining an elite pantheon, Joss Whedon's The Avengers will cross the $600 million mark at the domestic box office on Tuesday, becoming only the third film in history to do so.

A pair of James Cameron pics hold the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, with Avatar grossing $760.5 domestically and Titantic $658.8 million.

From Disney and Marvel Studios, Avengers ranks No. 3 on the list of global grossers with a take of $1.44 billion. In North America, it's been No. 3 for weeks after eclipsing the $533 million earned by The Dark Knight. Internationally, it ranks No. 4 ($838.9 million).

The 3D tentople has been a runaway hit since opening in early May. In North America, it debuted to a massive $207.4 million -- the largest opening of all time. It has broken a number of other records, including becoming the fastest film to hit $200 million, $300 million, $400 million and $500 million.

Only a dozen films have reached $1 billion in global grosses. That list includes five Disney titles -- Avengers, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Craziness that the foreign total is around what I initially predicted (optimistically thinking) the total gross would be

That it will pass Titanic (original release) tomorrow is ridiculous.
Yes, it didn't sell nearly as many tickets, but even with the high prices of today, with $600M in the bank, it has sold a crap ton of tickets and what it has achieved is beyond impressive.

You also have to factor in the entertainment available now compared to then, the pirating, and while the prices are high you have people who just won't go, where they might have gone when tickets were cheaper.

Think about it: When Titanic came out netscape navigator still hadn't peaked, and had only been somwhat-well known for about two years! And it would be a few more years before it's decline, and AOL wouldn't start seeing declines in subscribers for another 4 years!

I'm FAR more impressed with the big numbers movies put up now then back then.

Iron Man 2, the most successful Marvel movie to date in Japan (putting aside non pure Marvel movies. Spiderman 2 grossed an astonishing $60m there), has grossed around $13m.
So I'm expecting around $15-$20m, but who knows, Avengers is a monster that defied expectations across the board

I went for Scarlett.

What I got out of it was so much more.

I'm so glad they put The Hulk over they way they did.

I don't think it'll be around long enough to generate that much MORE $$$$$$$$$ at the Box Office.

I'm curious as to how IMDB is calculating this since it says Titanic is number 2 at just over $600 million. It does not seem to be calculating that extra $58 million the 3D release just made. According to that, Avengers should be number 2 this week.

I'm still wondering how much it will make in Japan.

I don't know about that. My girlfriend says that she's been hearing a lot of talk by people saying that they're pretty excited to see it on the big screen. Granted, this implies that they have already watched it somehow and therefore might hinder the "repeat viewing revenue," but still means many butts will be in theatre seats.

I don't think it will gross $50M in Japan. It's been more than 4 months since the release.

If it were to manage $39M it would pull it just over $1,500,000,000 WW.

Again, it will be very hard for The Avengers to gross more than $30M.

$30 million might be doable if it breaks out of the mold, but I think $50 million will be very difficult. Superhero movies just don't seem to do all too well in Japan.

Last year, X-Men: First Class made under $8 million, Thor made under $6 million, and Captain America made under $4 million. Iron Man and Iron Man 2 made roughly $9 million and $13 million respectively.

The Dark Knight made around $15 million, and though TDKR is sure to surpass it, probably won't make it to $30 million.

The only superhero franchise that I can think of that had huge success is Spiderman. The three original films made $56 million, $60 million, and $58 million, with the reboot heading toward $40 million.

Whatever the case, the seemingly low gross (compared to much of the rest of the world) it will probably end up having will not be due to it being such a delayed release, but more due to the fact that it's a superhero movie.
