This is probably the most anticipated movie of the year for me, but I do not see it coming close to the box office numbers of The Avengers. TDKR is the 3rd major superhero movie of the Summer, there will be strong holdovers when it releases (Spidey, Ice Age 4, ect), it will not play as strong as The Avengers with the family crowd, the Heath Ledger effect, plus no 3D.

Some positives: the end of a great trilogy, 4 years of anticipation for this movie, Nolan will
get it right, awesome marketing effort by WB, weak competition for the remainder of the Summer.

No way it can best The Avenger's $207 million opening weekend record without 3D....only so many shows that theaters can squeeze in a day.

Yeah, absolutely my most anticipated movie too

I knew without 3D this would be hard pushed to break the same records Avengers has and even with round the clock theatre showings from the get go it would struggle to keep up but i think over a longer period of time it could pull out in front possibly depending on how much audiences keep going to see the move.

I think 3D is only a truly amazing addition when done right tbh, and if Nolan had created all the Batman movies in a way such as Avatar should 3D like that have been around or even this movie, it would definitely have been in with a much bigger fighting chance.

I think it will be somewhere around $150 million. It has no 3D, no actor in the movie has died, and it is not quite a family superhero movie like Spiderman or Avengers. So i don't see it coming near Avengers and it may not even beat TDK opening. I do hope i am wrong though as it looks pretty epic.

On a side note i am just as excited for Amazing Spiderman as i am TDKR which is odd because i am a big Batman and DC fan. Amazing Spiderman just looks like it's done really well and looks like a ton of fun.

That's pretty bold to think it will crush Avengers that bad without the help of 3D. I like your optimistic outlook.

So you think that it won't beat even TDK's domestic gross?

He may not be that far off. TDK made $533 million domestic and Heaths death contributed somewhat to that. I knew people that went to see TDK due to a big star of the movie dying but they have little interest to see TDKR in theaters. I am sure i am not the only person who knows a few people like that.

Isn't it longer than Avengers and not coming out in 3D? That would seem to mean less screenings even if just by a couple and less money per seat if no 3D screenings. It may have more people go see it, but still not make as much money.

oh yeah. At our midnight premiere there were a lot of women standing in line to see Heath. My sister and her friends went to see it because of him. I guess I'm saying there were probably more females than usual to see it.

Clearly you don't know how a box office thread works

You're underestimating TDKR's popularity.

Actually I know -no one- who is excited to go see TDKR besides people in this thread.
Between the more comic booky vilains and not as well known (Bane/ CatWoman vs The Joker), a less family friendly tone than Avengers, and no tragic death of a lead cast members to spice thing up, I will predict an overall worse than TDK (slightly better WW due to more population able to see it overall).

Also, Super Hero fatigue (and not hunger like some have described) might set in.

My prediction:

Week end opening (domestic): $150m
Overall Domestic: $500m
Overall WW: $1.1/$1.2b

Well, to counter that, there isn't a single person I know that isn't foaming at the mouth to see this. I guess it's all in who you know.

And I don't know anyone excited by it.

This year belongs to Marvel. Batman will rock, but flop.

Send this post back to me when it doesn't and I'll eat one of my blu-rays.
