x2. I was not looking forward to dropping the $27 this is listed for on Amazon. I'm thinking $13.49 shipped is going to be tough to beat for such a random (but beloved) film.

I don't know how was the DVD but from what I saw from the first screenshots of the BLuray, it doesn't have a good contrast (much like the first batch of Arachnophobia).
The blacks seem washed out.

could you please share these screenshots? a link would be very helpful! Thanks in advance!

edit: if anyone else is wondering, best i've been able to find is some screen caps of a crappy 720p transcode. even with all the compression of this rip it still shows a lot of great grain and fine detail. super excited. old hand drawn anime is meant for blu-ray.

I'm watching a 1080p rip right now and I can't say I'm wowed by the PQ. It's very good, just not perfect. I haven't seen the movie before so I can't compare it to anything, the image has plenty of grain, the occasional dirt pops up but overall I think it looks pretty great.

I got this today, from RightStuf!, the one retailer on Earth with a distribution center in my home state (50 miles from my house) in podunk, midwest...

I'm about to watch it.

I have it on DVD, too -- but I never opened the DVD and have never seen the film before.

The DVD says runtime = 100 min
The Blu says runtime = 95 min

Anybody know what the proper runtime is?

To be more precise the blu runs 94 min 54 sec.

The picture was pretty good, surprisingly crisp (better in this regard than The Rescuers, which I watched last night) and detailed with film grain present and maintaining a consistent quality throughout. Some print blemishes in a few scenes but nothing excessive. Black level seemed a bit too high, but in some cases it seemed like if it were lowered things like the nightmare king would have been hard or impossible to see. So maybe it was intentional.

Not having seen it on DVD, it still seemed clearly better than DVD could provide.

Some minor weird things going on...something wrong with the top/bottom matte lines on the rightmost edges...95% of the line is straight and then the last 5% is vertically shifted up a pixel or two (not the image, just the matte). In a few scenes, animation (excluding backgrounds) that takes place too close to the right edge also displays a strange reflective ghosting behavior, like the image is wrapping back around over itself and slightly blurred. Again this is in about the rightmost 5% of the screen and doesn't last long but it can distract the eye over to that region reflexively in a few instances. Didn't really take away from my enjoyment of the movie.

Speaking of which, I liked the film itself. Some cool animation, a simple story, and a good score. I've had the recent Nemo hardcover comic volumes since my comics kick a few years back and still have not read them...

95min. I have the Japanese laserdisc and it's the same running time.

For the people who have this, what exactly are the audio options on this disc? Also, are there 2 different cuts of the movie or just one? Are the opening/closing credits in English, Japanese, or both?

Does anyone know if the blu-ray has any extras on it? I'm trying to hunt down either the region 2 DVD (which apparently ported over most if not all of the extras from the rare Japanese LD box set) or the rare Japanese LD box set:

(more information here)

Does anyone have any more information, or at least a small cover scan so I will know what to look for?

So when compared to the JP release, what wasn't carried over? The only JP dvd version I see is the one listed on amazon.jp. But the page doesn't list any special features...
