Hard to believe THE BLACK HOLE and 1941 were nominated for Best Cinematography that year and this wasn't...

I've owned this on laserdisc. Twice.
Then on DVD.

I'm almost in tears with joy over this news. Finally. I can't wait to see this again properly mastered in HD. This will make the home-theater renovation work worth the while when the projector is installed again...

Looks like that would work. Right now the collection is only $45 at Amazon, which is a pretty severe sale. If you happen to also want any of the other titles included, it's quite a deal. The only downside is that the discs probably are being offered in a group-style case so they can't be displayed individually on your shelf:

Good point! I had forgotten about those MGM Best of sets. Hope we hear something from someone who might have picked the "Family set" up.

$45 is a lot to spend just to get The Black Stallion. As much as I want to see it, I'll wait for the general release.
