My Xbox has a minor issue with #3 and #4 and it also can't play most DVD+Rs. My upconverting Sony player has issues with #2 and 3.

Now I know I'm only talking about DVDs, but for a $500 Blu-ray player, I expect it to be able to play DVDs well too without any of these issues. I have yet to encounter a DVD player that passes all 4 tests.
You mention that you own or have owned more than a couple of DVD players. What did this cost you. Buy the OPPO once, I rest my case. Seriously you will love the players OPPO makes, they are of great quality and if you watch alot of DVDs then you will love the upscaling they do. I cannot stress how great these players are . Buy one and if you dont like it then return it. The customer service OPPO has is second to none.

It seem's to me that my Sony S570 has all 4 of those bases you mentioned covered........and best of all it didnt cost me $500. I am sure Oppo makes excellent Blu ray players but the prices are just a little to much for my taste.

I think even if the OP has a ton of dvd's he probably would not get a substantial benefit out of the OPPO on his current size of tv. So if SACD or region free are not of issue then the OPPO is not right for you, although it is a fine piece of machine and honestly quite fairly priced for a relatively small company in the electronics world.

I personally would love an OPPO but even being a tv on dvd fanatic, along with anime and foreign flicks either not likely to come to blu or in the case of anime sometimes being way overpriced, i still would not get one until i get a bigger tv. Well at least as long as my current player works.

Funny! I have never encountered a Sony DVD player that has a buffer for DVD layer change. My two Sony DVD players don't have it, my Sony Blu-ray player doesn't have it, my dad's Sony player doesn't have it and my cousin's Sony player doesn't have it. If the Sony S570 has it, then that's the first Sony player I've heard that has that extra bell and whistle.

That's what I'm afraid of.... spending $500 and not being 100% satisfied. You make it sound very simple by saying buy it and return it if unsatisfied. Not so simple because I don't always discover a flaw in a player until MONTHS of owning it, which will be past the return period. I remember buying the Samsung BDP-1600 BD player three years ago. I was very happy with it during the first few months. Then when it started choking up on some new released BDs that I was buying, I felt so sorry I bought it. And Samsing wouldn't do sh@# to resolve the issue. They just release firmwares that worsen the issues instead of making it better. And it cost me $250 for that POS that ended up unreturnable!!!

Please remember that the PS3 and OPPO have no difference in BR PQ so if it's PQ you are looking for a much cheaper player would be the best option.

That's only true for 1080p/24 discs (which are like 99% of the discs), 1080i Blu-ray discs look better on the OPPO.

Same here. When I bought a new PS3 several months ago, I subscribed to a free one month trial to Playstation Plus but forgot to cancel the trial when it ended. I called customer service to see if I can get a refund but I got shot down. They told me they can add the funds to my PS wallet instead of my debit card. Damn communists!

That's because old Samsung blu-ray players like the one you're mentioning sucked a fat one. They were terrible and had continuing issues with new firmware. I know, I had a bdp-2550 that had great PQ but then ended up having a million problems as soon as I did the first firmware update. I now own an Oppo and love it. Again, you need to have the right stuff to benefit from it, but if DVD upconversion is important for you, then it's totally worth the money. They have a great solid build, sound fantastic, and are a great piece of machinery. However, if you're so doubtful on it, then it might not be worth your time or money. It sounds like you really just want the PS3 and if that meets your needs then go ahead and get it. I own both and the Oppo does a much better job at video and audio quality than the PS3.

When you say does a much better job of video, do you mean just the upscaling of DVD's?

I have never had an issue with Sony's customer service......knock on wood......they have always been helpful when I have needed it. Now you wanna talk about bad customer service? Give Samsung a call and try and get them to help you, good luck with that one.

Exactly.

Oppo actually cares. They will release beta firmware updates for the masses to try out... in some cases they eventually become the next official firmware because they work so well. In other cases, Oppo will fix whatever needs to be tweaked based on the feeeback and then release a fixed official firmware. If you aren't satisfied, you can always roll firmware back, and complain to Oppo and they will continue to work on the issue.

Yes, DVD's upscaled look phenomenal. the only catch is DVD's after 2003. I have(or had) plenty from 1997-2003 look like crap because most often studios didn't care about the transfer. And I'll say this, Lord of the rings extended on DVD looked like crap, but Star Wars original trilogy releases looked great.
Honestly, if you are only viewing on a 32" inch tv, than an OPPO probably isn't for you. I use my oppo as my main CD player for 2 channel audio. While not an audiophile in need of the 95, my 93 has a setup function just for 2 channel and sounds ALOT better than any other standalones I've used in the past. ALOT!

That's not necessarily true, yeah in theory there shouldn't be a difference, however I remember reading an interesting thread last year that member 'Oppopioneer' started with an article attached to it, where multiple blu-ray players had been tested and they found variations with those players, and discovered that they aren't all created equal. The Oppo was the only player out of the ones they tested that was 100% accurate. Here's a link to the thread below, though for some reason when you now click on the link to the article with the test data results it is no longer able to be viewed. The ps3 was not included in this test, but there was talks of another test being done using a ps3.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=173568

Edit: If you take the time to read through the thread then you will see that one of the people involved in the testing, and is the person who wrote the article, comments in the thread about their findings which was conducted at Stacey Spears house, one half of Spears and Munsil.

Exactly why I don't use the PS3 for blu or DVD watching.

I have 3 blu-ray player in my rack. PS3, Oppo and Denon.

Denon fails the nearest neighbour Y,Cr,Cb conversion to RGB test. Also clips above white info at R235.
PS3 passes the nearest neighbour test, however clips above white info at R235 when outputing RGB.
Oppo passes all tests.
