Exclamation Now available on VUDU for $7.99 in 5.1!

FYI for those looking for this, do not pay the high eBay prices.

Lionsgate has obtained the rights to Ritual. They might re-release it on BD, but even if they don't it is available on VUDU right now for $7.99 to own in 1.78:1 1080p/DD5.1.

Based on the screencaps, it doesn't look much different and the Echo Bridge Blu-ray was only 2.0... So technically the VUDU may actually be better in some ways!

I will stick with my DVD until the re-release it. I will not fall into the whole digital dream. You can't own anything digitally. What if they decide that they no longer want the movie available, they can just easily delete said film from ALL accounts that own it and poof it's gone. Look at the situation with Swamp Thing on DVD. They released the uncut version for a short while and then had to pull it and have the PG cut be the only version available. If it was a digital thing then they could simply pull the title from everyone and replace it with the censored version, where as when I own the physical copy they can't easily come to every person's house who bought said uncut copy and force them to replace it, something that this digital revolution is able to do

This is one argument to make, another argument is that in most cases this does not happen and if it does a refund will usually be offered.

It is also worth considering that physical media is not bulletproof either, and Lionsgate has a bad track record. Over 20 different Lionsgate Blu-ray titles have become susceptible to disc rot, resulting in them becoming completely unplayable or having A/V glitching. Also, Lionsgate has no replacement program for rotted Blu-ray discs (unlike Criterion and Well-go discs with the same problem, for instance).

While the problem appears to be corrected, the point is there were more cases of Lionsgate Blu-ray rot than people losing Lionsgate purchased digital movies:

I rented the version on Vudu, and it doesn't have the Cryptkeeper segments; it's the international cut. The only connection to Tales from the Crypt in it is that it says "Tales from the Crypt Holdings Presents" in the opening credits.

I sure do hope so. I'm dying to see this.

There's something I'd like to know.

According to IMDB, the film was never intended to be a Tales From The Crypt movie and the Cryptkeeper segments were added when the film was released on home video.

BUT, Wikipedia states (and there is a source to back this up), this was intended to be the 3rd Crypt movie, but because of the box office failure of Bordello of Blood, the Cryptkeeper segments were removed before theatrical release thus making it a regular horror movie, but restored for the home video release. This would also be known as the International Version of the film.

So which is it (either way, I accept this as the 3rd TFTC movie)?

From what I know it IS the third Crypt movie that was shelved due to 'Bordello' doing so bad. I know for a fact that I read an Entertainment Weekly article that said the deal with Universal was for three Crypt movies. Also it makes more sense to cut Crypt Keeper segments out of the movie than to film new ones years later when the popularity died down.

Flip a coin as to which untrustworthy source you want to trust. I guess at least wikipedia has a source noted.

The back cover of the Spanish release says 1080P; can anyone confirm that it is progressive?

I'm not sure how...

Quote:
Ritual feels about as much like a Tales from the Crypt film as Def By Temptation felt like a Troma film — that is, not at all. With barely a hint of the humor or the gore (aside from a grisly opening scene) that marked the excellent Demon Knight and the, er, Dennis Miller-y Bordello of Blood, this restrained and serious-minded third entry in the Crypt series seems like it was made outside of the realm of the Cryptkeeper and, like Def, had the recognizable name slapped on after the fact.

Ritual is actually loosely based on I Walked With a Zombie, which goes a long way to explaining its lack of sensationalism — although really, it ends up feeling like a poor man’s Serpent and the Rainbow. As with both IWWAZ and SATR, a white doctor/scientist-type (Jennifer Grey, whose nose may have shrunk but whose nipples cannot be contained) visits the Caribbean and gets wrapped up in deep voodoo doodoo. Actually, since the film takes place in Jamaica, the term most often used is “obeah,” and while this attention to detail doesn’t necessarily make for great horror, Ritual is one of the most realistic Hollywood showcases of voodoo, obeah, whatever around. There’s also interesting insight into the racial dynamics of the Caribbean plantation system, but hey, is this a horror film or a history book? That said, the decision not to include Patrick Swayze or a Jennifer Warnes ballad is much appreciated.
...equates to...

A third Crypt movie was planned on the release of Bordello of Blood, but due to the low box office take in of that film, this film's references to the Tales from the Crypt franchise and Crypt-Keeper intro and credits were removed until the DVD release.[2]
Since the "source" is saying the exact opposite of what is claimed in the Wikipedia article, I'd have to give IMDB the nod, by default.

I was about to post that "I had no idea this even existed", and then I opened the thread to see myself making the above post about six years ago. Apparently I closed the thread and never thought about it again.

I think I might be in some weird TFTC episode where as soon as I close the thread, the film vanishes from existence.

I'll see y'all in 2027.

You're probably better off for it. This was so bad IMO I threw out the torrent burned to disc I downloaded in 02 or 03. I usually kept all of those just in case, but this just bored me into being pissed off at it. I could tell the Crypt Keeper scenes felt like they were an afterthought and not really meant to be there. The movie doesn't have any of those fun Crypt twists or comeuppances. If you can watch for free on cable or some stream... it's your time. Anyone who would pay over $5 for the BD should be checked in to mental institution.

The IMDB story is the accurate one. The two other films for the Universal deal were Dead Easy and Body Count. Dead Easy started pre-production but A.L Katz and Gil Adler were forced to cancel production and start work on Bordello of Blood which was a student script that Universal bought to prevent producer Robert Zemeckis from leaving and joining Dreamworks (Katz and Adler did a podcast where they explain all of this)

Body Count (which was supposed to be a movie about an undead mercenary) came very close to starting production but was cancelled due to Bordello flopping. Ritual was never intended to be a Crypt film despite the involvement of the same producers. It was supposed to be part of a series of modern remakes of 1940's horror films (Ritual is a loose remake of I Walked with a Zombie) for Miramax that never came to fruition. It was re-released as a Crypt movie to capitalize on the success of the DVD releases of the show.
