At least for me, 80% of the CC is meh at best. Yea there are some good movies here and there, but I see it more as a fanboy obsession for some people. Like "oh this hungarian movie that 99% of the people never heard I must have"... yet the movie is average. But of course there are others who truly cherish those releases, so respect to them.
I own/owned these CC: Che, Le Cercle Rouge, and Army of Shadows And I only plan on getting The Game and Traffic from there releases as of now. |

![]() FYI, you're trying too hard to be anti-establishment. It doesn't fly. In fact, it makes yo the same kind of "elitist" you accuse others of being. Congrats! Last edited by retablo; 10-29-2012 at 04:38 AM. |

Like any other "studio" I buy the titles that I know I will return to for repeat viewing. Criterion is no different. Yes, they generally do a better job with video and audio, and they tend to go for older, critically acclaimed (or at least interesting) titles. But I know I will never spin most of it, and I don't want my $$$s spent on titles I will not rewatch. That said, I will buy all the Criterion Kurosawa I can get my hands on.

"Attacking" movies is not the same as attacking you personally. Please learn the difference. You want to troll the thread, fine. But don't get butt hurt if someone calls you out. I'll take my "Herringbone cap" as you call it and my film knowledge, and leave you to your "vulgar" movies. Last edited by retablo; 10-29-2012 at 05:03 AM. |

I actually love the films. You can look through my collection and tell I am not a snob at all. I love trashy cinema as much as classic cinema. The nice thing about Criterion is they hold their value pretty well. If you take a chance on something and buy it on sale you can usually recoup 80 -90% if you try. The films themselves are amazing. Yes some of them were never blockbusters but that is the beauty of it. You are getting some amazing cinema that may otherwise be forgotten. Sorry it is so long winded but I used to think like a lot of you until I gave them a chance.
Edit. I realize these films are not for everyone, but to each their own right? Last edited by thecynical_drummer; 10-29-2012 at 05:09 AM. |

Is there some significant number of people claiming that's not the case? Is there some widespread belief that supplements are as important or as popular as main features? Ok,... So.
My kids love those and have watched them several times and they wonder why I haven't picked up part 3 yet. The answer to that is I haven't found it used for under $10 like the other 2. They like the chipmunks too. |

I started buying Criterions back in the laserdisc days. Since they invented the very concept of extras and were among the first to release movies in OAR, they were pretty much the reason I got into laserdisc in the first place. Their BRAZIL box set is probably still the most expensive single movie I have ever bought. And I even had to buy it again later in DVD (and soon on BD).
![]() I bought them quite religiously in the early days of the DVD, usually about 3-5 every month. The Criterion Collection was really my personal film school in some way. Because the high standard of many of their releases made me go out and blind buy movies I had never seen or in some cases not even heard of and thus broaden my horizon. There are a lot of movies I would probably not have taken a chance on had they not been issued by Criterion. Now you have several other companies doing releases of similar (or better) quality, most notably MoC. But back in the early 00's it was really only them. I think I amassed around 250-300 of their DVD's before I went through a couple of years of personal turmoil which put an end to my collecting. Since then, I have only bought around a handful of their DVD's. I bought the BD's that went OOP even before I had a BD-player because I just didn't want to risk missing something good. But since I went BD around a year ago I have only bought few Criterions. To be honest, I have't even watched the ones I got at the last Barnes & Noble sale. These days, I find that I rarely use my BD-player and more often turn to Netflix when I want to watch something. Nevertheless, because of my long history with the company, they still have a very special place in my heart. Without them chances are I would never have learned to love Bergman or Fellini or Rohmer or... I'll probably also end up buying another 10 or so at the upcoming B&N sale, even though I don't know when I will get around to watch them. |

I can relate to that. I sometimes get Criterions from the library because my library tends to have them and they tend to be watch once type of movies.

That's funny, because for me it's the other way around. The reason I buy Criterions (or, at least, the reason I used to buy them a lot) is that I find they are of the watch a lot of times type of movies.
I have no problem watching either HOT TUB TIME MACHINE or THE SEVENTH SEAL. But I find that I will rather spend my money on owning the latter because it, like many Criterions, profits from several viewings whereas the former is something I will watch once. |
