I admit, Episode I might not look great. But it is still miles above the original "Pink" DVD release from almost a decade ago.

(just to the right of the shadow line directly between her cheek dots) You don't see it on the DVD jpeg. Fact. It's lost in the DVD noise.

That is NOT better, by any reasonable definition of "better" in this context.
I just cannot see any defined detail in the Blu-Ray cap. It looks so smooth and smeared and processed that it just appears like a fake lifeless image. Yes its "cleaner" and easier on the eyes so to speak, but I still maintain that the DVD version despite being covered in ugly noise and being low res, looks more realistic with what looks like more detail on her face. The overall fact of the matter is, the DNR overload really hurts what would have been a great presentation. The Blu-Ray especially in exterior shots when the camera pulls back from the infrastructure in the sets and locations still looks 100 times better then the DVD with much better colour saturation and detail that even at times rivals other great Blu-Rays, but other shots like anything with actors, look so soft and smooth that for whatever reason it looks like it has less detail then even the crappy DVD. Its a real mixed bag. Its good is quite good, its bad is extremely bad.

The good parts like any shots showing off the infrastructure of the sets and locations or CGI characters absolutely destroys the DVD in every single way you can think of, but bascially any shots involving actors look so soft and digitized that despite still being cleaner, looks to have remarkably even less detail and the pink DVD release was horrible even for DVD standards. Hell, the Laserdisc almost rivals the DVD and doesn't have EE like the DVD did.

Some have mentioned The Big Lebowski, was just looking at some screenshots before and wow, it looks crazy bad! There is virtually no detail at all, its been completely and utterly destroyed by DNR! I mean this screenshot is so bad its almost freaky. Its almost worse then Predator UHE.

Even the DVD version of that scene looks loads better!

I can't believe anyone would name Episode I.
I despise the film, but it looks pretty true to its source, and though it lacks fine detail, it certainly isn't "the worst DNR Blu-ray ever"

Nor is The Big Lebowski. Or They Live. Or Apollo 13. etc.
Universal handles their catalog releases terribly. Even BTTF and Jurassic Park look somewhat lacking IMO.
But for the most part, everything looks... decent. Better than DVD but nothing that really shows off the power of Blu-ray. They just look like they were meant for HDTV(which is exactly that) and Universal's output looks on par with most DNR'd Blu-rays(TDK, Dark City, Terminator 2).

Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition on the other hand is an atrocity. So bad, it's actually kind of funny.

And Patton looks pretty bad, but at least its DNR'd 70mm.

The very worst DNR work I've seen is on The 40 Year-Old Virgin.
Check out some of the screenshots for that. It's kind of painful to see such a recent film looking like that.

+1 T2 deserves better, I would like a restoration like T1...

Toy Story. Most of the characters look like they're made of plastic.

There's a foreign release of Kundun that truly looks like a bad joke, like someone applied an oil paint photoshop filter at 200% saturation. It literally looks computer animated.

I might just have to agree with you there. Longest Day will always be my #1 DNR disaster, and yet in a way I can almost understand why the clueless guys doing the transfer did it, because it's an Old Film™, right?

But there was a mere two-year-gap between the theatrical release of 40 Year-Old Virgin and the HD debut of that diabolical transfer, so how did it get so utterly ****ed up? It's not like it was shot on Super 16! Applying that much processing proves how utterly hopeless Universal were/are at dealing with this 'high definition' malarkey.

I'm throwing Tremors in this because it's f***-ing hideous. It's a horrible job by Universal and ruined the movie. Any argument over DNR that doesn't include Tremors is missing a glaring example on the level of Predator UHE for badness...

Eh....Tremors is pretty bad, but lowering the sharpness on my display (which is set as high as it can go before inducing any ringing of its own, checked with DVE and AVS709) smoothes out the obnoxious EE and makes it look kinda almost semi respectable-ish. But do that to 40YOV or Longest Day and I end up with laughable claymation textures because so much detail has already been leeched out by the DNR.

As I think I said in the They Live thread, it's the double whammy of EE + DNR that gets me. One or t'other I can live with as long as they don't go crazy with it, but they're usually presented together for the simple reason that overdone DNR removes detail, so they add in EE to bring back the perceived sharpness and 'pop' of the image. But WHY DO THAT when you've got a nice detailed image TO BEGIN WITH? Madness.

I haven't seen some of these titles mentioned in the thread, but American Psycho is really bad. Yes, Predator UHE too.

I'd love to get the Australian release of American Psycho since it has no DNR, but it's super expensive. That's to be expected though and I only paid $5 for the US release anyway.

It's $12.98aud or 2 for $20aud at the moment, which is cheap by our standards. Our average incomes are higher than the U.S here by roughly $20000-$25000, so naturally goods and services here are more than what they cost you there in the U.S to balance it all out. The lowest price American Psycho has reached here individually is $9.98aud, which if you order it as a part of the current 2 for $20 promotion at jbhifi.com.au, then that's exactly what you will be paying for it. You will likely never see it any cheaper, though since the Australian dollar is worth more than the U.S dollar at the moment (which has been the case for almost 2 straight years), you will pay a little more than $9.98/2 for $20, but if you were to wait for the U.S dollar to eventually be worth more again you could save that small amount of money. However there is no guarantee that the price of American Psycho will drop to the same price that it is now when the value of the U.S dollar strengthens and finally rises, so your best bet is probably just to buy it now .
