Ridley Scott's Legend:
- Ultimate Edition (for extras & US theatrical version)
- UK edition (for european version)

The Expendables:
- UK Steelbook "Bulletproof Edition"
- Extended Director's Cut

And that's all.

Quote:
Owning multiple copies of the same movie is a total waste of money, even if you love the show. Its only acceptable when a new cut or a new copy with more special features comes out.
That's how I look at it.

Have the final cut of "Blade Runner," which is part of recently released multi-cut Digibook. If the one in the digibook is the same as the standalone, then I may sell the standalone final cut.

Once upon a time, had the standalone "High Anxiety" and the Mel Brooks set. Sold both and bought the standalone "Young Frankenstein." Someday, may buy a standalone "Blazing Saddles."

The number of duplicates I have between DVDs and BDs is countless.
I did double-up on the following Blu-Rays:

Avengers: UK Steelbook, and the US 3D edition (wanted all the extras and the US cut)
Battle Royale: UK limited edition, US complete collection (keeping the UK one for collectability)
Brazil: US Blu-Ray, UK Blu-Ray (different cuts; the Criterion release will probably supplant all these)
Cronos: got it first in the Guillermo del Toro UK collection, then got the Criterion Collection version.
Expendables: theatrical and extended cuts
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: got the digibook version first, then just recently got it in the complete collection (still keeping the book for collectability, and extras)
Laputa: Castle in the Sky: UK edition, US edition (...just...because...)
Lord of the Rings: theatrical cut Steelbook, extended cut
Metropolis: complete edition, Giorgio Moroder version
Pan's Labyrinth: got the US version, then got the Guillermo del Toro collection from the UK
Rambo: theatrical cut and extended cut
Red Cliff: complete edition, cut edition
Salo: got the UK cut, then the US Criterion Collection version (keeping both due to different sets of extras)
The Secret World of Arrietty: UK edition with British dubbing, US edition
A Serbian Film: UK cut and US cut (together, it's practically the full cut)

If there's any more I plan on doing, it might be Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Blade. I have the shorter cut now, but I still haven't seen it. If it's good, I'll double-up on it and get the full-length four-hour cut too.

Avengers, 2 copies (big box set and target exclusive....took the disk off target exclusive, giving movie for Christmas gift)

Batman begins and TDK....picked up steels at best buy for the cool case and the $5 discount on TDKR.....figure it was worth the $5 net on each when you get the steel plus the ultraviolet with each)

Bought an extra ET and Jaws digibooks from best buy.....still mint, unsure what to do with them longterm.

Girl with Dragon tattoo. Thought my copy got snagged by a babysitter, bought it when it dropped to 7.99 or whatever it was after Black Friday, found original copy in piano bench. Second copy still mint

Up....just bought the 3d

Halloween II....loved the Scream Factory version

Cars....forgot I owned it when I bought a second copy

Thinking of doubling up on the Polar Express and Nightmare before Christmas 3ds

That reminds me; I've got the original Swedish trilogy, both the theatrical cut box set and the extended edition box set.

I haven't seen the Swedish cut of Dragon....not the biggest fan of subtitles (and for all I know it's in English!). How does the American version compare?

You're missing out on a lot of excellent foreign titles then.

It is indeed subtitled. I don't remember them being particuarly challenging, but I can understand the feeling of not wanting to sit there and read through it all.

Since the US version is based on the book, rather than being a mere remake, there are a lot of subtle differences between the US and Swedish films. They're just two different takes on the same material, but the story is certainly the same, actors are equally great in either version. I think one of the biggest things is that David Fincher has a more unique style and pacing for the US version, whereas the Swedish film is slower and more padded.

I personally ranked them both about the same: 4.5/5 for either one.

Not that many, and none because of packaging, I don't collect packaging myself. I have more that aren't listed below but I don't consider them as a part of my collection, as they are titles which I have bought better versions of. The 1st copies of these movies I bought just sit in a box which are stored in a cupboard. I keep them for the local covers, as I prefer blu-ray covers from my country.

The duplicates in my collection are listed below,

Being John Malkovich, I ordered the Criterion release during the BF sales, it is currently listed in my "ordered" list but will be added to my "owned" list once I receive it (which is hopefully in the package that is waiting for me at my local post office that I'm going to pick up tomorrow), and then will remove my Australian Universal release from my collection. Though I won't sell my region B/region free version as the Criterions are region A locked.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, same as the reason above for Being John Malkovich

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, same as the reason above for Being John Malkovich

The Thin Red Line, same as the reason above for Being John Malkovich

Dead Man Walking, I own the Canadian release, but have preordered the UK version because I prefer to own region B/region free Blu's where I can, just in cases I don't own a region A/region free blu-ray player in the future. When I receive my UK order I will remove the Canadian version from my collection.

The Last of the Mohicans, same situation as Dead Man Walking

From Dusk Till Dawn, I prefer to have each film on it's own disc, even though the single disc combo packs are usually the same quality. I have the individual UK release of this, but also own the U.S 4 pack only for Full Tilt Boogie

From Dusk Till Dawn 2, same as above with Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn 3, same as above with Dusk Till Dawn

Timecop UK, Timecop/Bloodsport double pack U.S, same situation as the Dusk Till Dawn series above

Grumpy Old Men individual release and Grumpy Old Men/Grumpier Old Men double pack, same reason as what's listed next to From Dusk Till Dawn

The Last Boy Scout UK individual release and The Last Boy Scout/Last Man Standing double pack, for the same reason as what's listed next to From Dusk Till Dawn

Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider/Tomb Raider 2 German double pack. The German version of Tomb Raider has lossless audio, but I prefer to own films with English menu's, so I have the local version as well.

Resident Evil Afterlife 2d disc and 2d/3d disc, I prefer to own the 2d discs separately

Saw the Final Chapter 2d disc and 2d/3d disc, same reasons as Resident Evil Afterlife

Underworld Awakening 2d disc and 2d/3d disc, same reasons as Resident Evil Afterlife

Avatar, I own the extended and 3d versions, I don't really count those as duplicates

Blade Trinity, I own the Warner Extended version, as well as the Canadian Alliance Theatrical cut, I actually prefer the theatrical cut to be honest. I like owning both the theatrical and extended versions of films, and personally I don't consider it as owning duplicates.

Dances With Wolves, same situation as Blade Trinity above

The Expendables, same reasons as Blade Trinity above

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, same reasons listed next to Blade Trinity

The Girl Who Played With Fire, same as Blade Trinty

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest, same as Blade Trinity

Lord of the Rings Trilogy, same reasons as Blade Trinity

Mimic theatrical/extended, same reasons that are listed next to Blade Trinity

Superman the movie theatrical/extended, same reasons that are listed next to Blade Trinity

Superman 2 theatrical and Richard Donner cut, same reasons that are listed next to Blade Trinity

Watchman theatrical/extended, same reasons that are listed next to Blade Trinity

Casino Royale, I own the Australian uncut 2 disc Collectors Edition and the new disc from the Bond 50 set. I actually own the original LPCM version as well, which I got for free when I bought a ps3 in 2007, though I don't include it as a part of my collection nore is it on my movie shelf.

Quantum of Solace, I bought this when it was released, but now have it amongst the Bond 50 set as well, though I choose to keep the 1st version I bought because I prefer to have it in it's own case

Machete individual release and Machete/Desperado/Once Upon a Time in Mexico triple pack. I bought Machete on it's own 1st, then the triple pack. I prefer for it to be in it's own case

Predator and Predator UHE, I bought the horrid UHE on release expecting a better version, unfortunately that's not what we got. Even though I'm not really into special features I decided to keep the UHE edition for them.

Total Recall 1st Aussie release and the new Total Recall Ultimate Rekall Edition, I choose to keep both due to their differences

Terminator 2, I own the 1st Australian barebones release from 2008, which is one of the best releases out there, and I also own the Terminator 2 Skynet Edition

Rambo trilogy, I own the 1st trilogy released by universal in 2008, and also bought the remastered trilogy when it was released last year in 2011. I choose to keep both sets because of the debates surrounding which versions of Rambo 2 and 3 are best out of them.

Edit: You can add Zodiac to the list now as well, for obvious reasons.

Not counting 3D bundles where a 2D disc is also included...

Right now for duplicates among Blu-Ray, just Tron (three times over: by itself, bundled with Tron: Legacy 3D, limited edition bundle) and Tron: Legacy (four times over: by itself, 3D by itself, bundle, limited edition bundle). I am a Tron collector (and have the original in most of its previous home video releases, including non-US), if that helps to explain anything.

When Criterion releases Pina, that will be another double dip, because I imported the German 3D release a while back when it was not looking likely to receive a 3D release in the US.

(My thread, which I was trying to ask a simple question with, got deleted by some people who got butthurt by the title).
So, let me get this straight. You started that previous (now deleted) thread simply asking the question that you don't understand why people would do this, and when some people got offended and became defensive about it, you came back in saying that you didn't mean for it to turn into what it did (people getting upset and offended by others judging their purchasing decisions), and that you were simply inquiring why people do this with no malicious intent or judgment behind it......

....and now you post here in this thread calling it a total waste and specifically stating the ONLY circumstances under which you consider it to be acceptable to purchase the same movie more than once (because clearly if there is one and only one person in all of the world to dictate what the all-encompassing standard on these things should be, it would be some random joe-schmoe internet forum poster like yourself ), and acting all butt-hurt over your previous thread being deleted, all while flat out confirming that the people who got upset and took offense actually were accurate in 'reading between the lines' and picking up your true thoughts on the matter. You were apparently never in a position of open-mindedness to even try understand why some people might do what they do in their collecting habits that you don't understand or agree with, despite you trying to disguise it as something else. You couldn't have been given what you've said here.

Now, I don't want to get into some big back-and-forth with you over this as it wouldn't accomplish anything and that previous thread was deleted for a reason. But I'm also not going to pretend not to have noticed the HUGE contradiction between how you tried to frame the intent of that previous thread, and how you are stating your opinion on the matter now (while specifically referencing that thread, no less).

Despite having tons of duplicates on dvd, I have been doing good with blu-ray. The one and only double I have right now is Return of the Living Dead (US BD, UK LE steelbook with original audio) and that's cuz I jumped on the US version first, then found out the UK had original audio and was region free. I'll keep the US version as all the extras are different and I can't view the sd UK extras until I get region free. Still probably my all time favorite zombie movie and so good to hear it sound right again. The remixed audio for the dvds always bugged me, now it doesn't have to.

None for me. It'll probably happen one the very odd occasion sooner or later. I won't be gettin the same movie twice unless it's an alternate cut of the movie or something like that. For example I wouldn't own a standard release of something like 300 and also have a Steelbook of the exact same movie.
