Question: Do you have to see Cars or Cars 2 in order to understand the movie "Planes?" I've never seen Cars and my daughter has expressed interest in seeing Planes in theaters....

The reason I ask is that I saw the 3 min trailer for Planes at my local theater and it looks like some of the characters from Cars are in the Planes movie...

I don't remember seeing any Cars characters in the Planes trailer. Certainly there are similarities, but the Cars characters should be owned by Pixar, and I don't think they're sharing

yeah, despite some similar looking characters, I don't believe there is any actual overlapping. Even if they did, I doubt the story would be difficult to follow without seeing the Cars films.

My daughter loves both Cars films and we will be seeing Planes as well, but yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Planes managed to open with $22.5 million. I think that's pretty good for a film that was originally supposed to go straight-to video. This could manage to hold stronger then Cars 2 did given the much smaller OW rush, and the lack of family films entering the market until the end of next month (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 opens September 27th).

The film's budget is $50M and they were considering sending that straight-to-video? They would have to sell 2.5 million blu-rays to make that money back. And sadly, the only movies that can make $50M in home video sales are Twilight movies and Hunger Games and they do that on DVD sales alone because that demographic still buys DVDs.

This makes me ponder about the most expensive straight to video films now.

Yes. It was originally supposed to go straight-to video sometime this year, while having a theatrical run over in Europe. The completed sequences impressed Disney enough to instead give it a wide theatrical release.

I plan on taking my kids as well. I took them to Lowes today for the kids build and they got to build Dusty (crop duster) and in two weeks they get to build
El Chupacabra. They had a good time but now time to take them to the movie I guess

Saw this in 3D since I had a free ticket voucher to blow. Not bad, but it's one of the few disney 3d titles I don't think I'll bother to buy on bluray. Story was not that great or exciting, and seemed to be a bunch of separate events patched together as a race. Characters weren't that memorable. Animation and 3D was fine, but the sound seemed to be badly mixed with too much low punch in some voices at times that almost hurt my ears in the dialog heavy scenes. Could have been the theater. Or maybe the fact that I could barely stand listening to dane cook's annoying voice poisoned it for me. I don't recall who does the work for pixar's or disney's other hits, but the credits for this one shows it was largely staffed by an Indian studio. Guess it was outsourced.

Domestic: $82,984,000 59.8%
+ Foreign: $55,800,000 40.2%
= Worldwide: $138,784,000

The film actually ended up doing fairly decent. Only $50 million budget and it made $83 million in the US with another $56 WW...and when the Blu/DVD numbers come in, it should be pretty big as well.

It still has to come out in 7 countries also. France, Japan, ... So those numbers will even higher in the end.
