Are BDs from 4K masters better than those from 2K/1080p masters? Undoubtably. Would I be for all studios being transparent and stating on the box what the quality of the master they used was? Definitely. If Sony was committing to remastering a larger quantity of old films in 4K, or pushing for more transparency about the quality of masters used, I'd be all for it.

But nothing new is introduced by this line, nothing is changed. The Amazing Spider-Man, Total Recall, etc. ALREADY have Blu-rays mastered from 4K. The ones you can go to the store and buy right now. Nothing new is being done for these releases - it's just a new marketing line on the same master. Maybe it'll be re-encoded with slightly higher bitrate, but Sony BDs are already good in that respect so I can't imagine there will be much improvement.

It's literally just pointing out "Hey! This small handful of films come from 4K masters. Cool huh?"
I agree with you on all the above points. I didn't realize that this would be exclusive to Sony releases. I thought that all studios eventually having to use 4K masters for a future 4K native format, would then have those studios release Mastered in 4K 1080P Blu-rays for current players. My bad

4K is ridiculous.

Sony can hardly handle their 1080p releases, yet they're busy releasing The Other Guys and Total Recall in 4K..

Damn, personally I think this announcement would have impressed me more had they been more classic / epic film titles.

I have seen other websites mention Taxi Driver, though it was absent from the press release.

I'm sure the majority of developers have a great grasp of how to get a game to run in 1080p at 60 frames. Just not worth it considering how much they would have to sacrifice on ancient hardware such as the PS3 and 360.

Also, bummer at this marketing mush. My impression from the topic title was that they were remastering titles in 4K, rather than slapping the blurb on the cover as an excuse to re-release the same disc to mark up the MSRP.

What does "expanded color" mean? How does that work?

Exactly. SONY can mention that and 4K in the same sentence but nothing yet about classic films like Columbia Pictures' 'From Here To Eternity'? Wouldn't doubt that being in the hands of Twilight Time. Wow....yea, they have their priorities straight.

A wider range, Mac

Native 4K has a wider range of colors. 1080p does not capture the whole spectrum of colors.

But you should not worry. With a properly done transfer even from a 2K source, you are very, very close.

lol I remember buying into the whole Superbit hype way back in the day. My fellow DVD-collecting friends made fun of me for doing so and in retrospect they were right to. Definitely not falling for it again.

A bit of a gimmick methinks. I mean a mastered in 4K title will always look good, but other studios do this already and don't feel the need to have any kind of seperate branding. No doubt this is a similar attempt to mislead customers, a bit like the whole "HD Ready" TV nonsense when in actual fact some of the TVs were 480 X 720 resolution (or 1024 X 768).

This is so dumb. Warner might as well start slapping stickers on their Blus that were "Mastered in 6K" or "Mastered in 8K". Sure as heck beats Sony's "Mastered in 4K", right?

Great post. I can just see the Ben Hur re-release now, "Mastered in 6K..."

Pffft. Sony have been mastering films in 4K for years now, and slapping a 4K sticker on a regular Blu-ray - and actually advocating it for use with their 4K sets - will cause no end of confusion. The folks in this thread who think that these are actual 4K Blu-ray movies is testament to that.

Now available: "Near 4K" that really isn't anywhere near 4K but looks a lot like 4K but is really 1080p. Facepalm.

That's my feelings on this. Studios like Sony and WB are cranking out rereleases when they have plenty of unreleased catalog titles to offer.
