I pulled the trigger!

I really enjoyed this on Bluray. I thought the CGI is good (notch above those SYFY CGIs). The story is entertaining and have moments of thrills. Shot in native 3D so that is a big plus for collecting it for me.

Not sure when or where I got it, but my copy is region free (tested it on both my region A and region B 3D players. Disc and box are absent of any region markings.

Just watched Spiders this evening. Other than one hyperstereo shot of Manhattan I'd say this is has the most insipid 3D of any natively shot film that I've seen. I can't think of any post-converted films from the last several years that have worse 3D; Spiders, for me, is a great example of how native doesn't equal good. Still, if you love a giant spider...

The 3D does not impress, true, but those spiders look so much worse in 2D...

Ha ha! I can't imagine sitting through this film in 2D (can't really imagine watching it in 3D again if I'm honest). If I'm being generous, some of the less giant spiders in long shots didn't look too awful and, overall, the film had a reasonable look (for a cheapie), but the humourless script and performances were its biggest downfall (along with the mostly poor 3D).

So this business of one camera picking up reflections that the other is not, what did the camera people do wrong when they were shooting this and how is this issue avoided on other natively shot movies? I understand what is happening but I'm wondering how could they have prevented it.

My assumption is that native films where it's not noticeable have just been more careful with the production design and props and stuff. In Spiders both the leads had dark shiny hair, so that was maybe asking for trouble. Whoever the stereographer was (I don't know their name), it's possible they're regarded as one of the greats - but, my guess is, they really weren't particularly good at it (at least, not when they worked on Spiders).

Surely it's got to be more than reflective surfaces and shiny hair! I mean loads of native movies have stuff like that in.

I mean, basically, I don't know! But another film where it's pretty bad is A Haunting In Salem (I expect you've got that one), another cheap native film where there are clearly several terrible choices of props for a native film (lots of shiny black things).

I honestly think that in films with more experienced people working on them they're able to minimize or completely remove the issue by being more careful what they put in front of the cameras, but you just don't notice they've done it. My guess is that the better native films had someone on the set looking out for exactly this problem. (I think I read somewhere that on Avatar Cameron put in things like helmet screens digitally after the event specifically to get around the problem.)

I do have A Haunting in Salem and now you mention it, I recall the exact same issue with reflections!

For some reason, in A Haunting in Salem, the problem was seen on loads of things beginning with a B: A bird, a bedspread, a book, a belt. And it was bad.

Watched it last night. I give this a rating of 4.25.

Quality of Depth 5/5. Great depth.

Quality of Pops 3/5. Not much pops. A shattering scene in the beginning had a great pop but the rest of the few ones ljust popped average to below average distance.

Quality of Layering 4/5. Above average feel of 3D throughout.

Quality of Ghosting Minimization 5/5. Very few and far between ghosting. An example of scene with ghosting is when the couple were in stairs and went down and as they walked through the corridor to exit the building, there is ghosting, more apparent on the woman's legs. English Subtitles have zero ghosting.
