Default Apple & MPEG4

My guess is THE biggest reason Apple supports MPEG4 Part 10 over VC-1 is MPEG4 uses the Apple QuickTime file format as its standard. Thus Apple is most likely one of the patent holders behind MPEG4 Part 10.

Yeah that certainly helps. But if it didn't perform well do you think apple would use it. Watch some of the mpeg 4 1080p trailers on there website and tell me if you like them.

The trailers look great.

H.264 is going to be everywhere. DIRECTV and Dish Network are using it in the US and BBC as well as many other providers in Europe.

I can't think of any broadcasters that have chosen VC-1.

Perhaps real time performance for it is not up to scratch.

Yeah There must be some reason that all those providers have chosen MPEG4 as opposed to VC-1 though i have no clue what it is. However we shall see as they roll out there offeringings with the new codec.

My thoughts exactly. Apple's HD trailers look fantastic. H.264 I think will be used heavily in upcoming Blu-ray releases, especially once the format backers decide to give us the HD extras on the discs.

Agreed 100 percent. Fantastic. Amazing. Use any synonym for those words and you're dead on.

Compared to what you can do on Blu Ray, the Apple trailers would be considered low bit rate...!

Read this....

Though the Blu-ray edition is still only a BD-25, 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' on HD DVD is a HD DVD/DVD hybrid disc, with the HD DVD side only a single-layer, HD-15 disc (that's 15Gb storage capacity max).
VC-1 hammering MPEG2 in only 15GB compared to 25GB.

I wish we could say that and see that right now.

That's the pluses of a more efficient codec, all the way.

You don't HAVE to worry about space constraints when you decide to leave the long in the tooth, space hogging MPEG2 that, yes, it can be implemented well and look really good (DVHS), but why not go for new hotness all the way and finish it?

See my sig? That says it all.

You don't HAVE to worry about BD50 discs RIGHT AWAY if you're using the space you have more efficiently and better.

Yeah which gives you the flexability to take your time to implent 50 gig discs in an amazing manner and also helps you come to a faster conclusion about the next gen audio codec your going to use. Plus it would improve picture quality much in the near future.

I think that apple signed on with blu-ray in part because they want blu-ray to use MPEG4 so that they get some royalities and it would be very easy for apple to fold in MPEG4 disc playback ie blu-ray support into there computers if it was using a codec that is already widely used on their platform. Plus we've seen apples distrubution of HD and it looks fantastic so we know that MPEG4 can delivery the goods in 1080p.
