I decided to send Zavvi an email inquiring about this(and the others), and here is what I got:

Thank you for getting in touch about the Indiana Jones Kingdom of the Crystal Skull steelbook.

We have up to now been unable to secure an order for this our buyers are working on getting this in.

If there is anything else that we can do, then please do not hesitate to get in touch and a member of our team will be happy to help.

Kind regards,

Rachael

Zavvi.com Customer Service Team

I wonder if that means some other outfit(Amazon?) is also trying to order these? Which makes me wonder how these exclusives are obtained? Bidding, that couldn't be it as Amazon could easily outbid Zavvi. Is there a contract drawn up?
Somebody needs to ask this Wreck guy to get to the bottom of these releases. They are all too good, not to see the light of day.

Thanks for posting the info. Perhaps they are having problems negotiating the amount of steels, Zavvi may not want to buy the stock the studio is wanting to sell?

In this case I would of liked to see a single steel with all 4 films, as with The Godfather trilogy, all 4 discs fitted within a non-jumbo G2 steel. But I know a lot of people would prefer to buy these separately. Although the artwork is darn fine looking.

There already is a quadrilogy steelbook out there somewhere.

Technically they have gone on order. They just got pulled from pre-order status due to rescheduled release date.

Ah... re-reading it now, when you were saying "they," you were referring to only the Crystal Skull stock as plural quantities. My bad. I read it as a reference to the quantity of films in the franchise!

Now you're gonna get us in trouble, as people are going to see posts in this thread and think the order is live!

Yeah, I'd like to know how it works with all these 'exclusive steelbooks' aswel. I mean, I don't think a studio is even involved. Maybe to ask permission to use their artwork or something... I mean, it's not like only the 'big retailers' are able to get an exclusive.

Hidef forum, blufans, entertainment store, etc. how do they even get an exclusive? A message board with its own exclusive steelbook... Weird, don't really get it

3 weeks??? What you talkin' 'bout Willis?!?!?!

ALL Indy steels have been pushed back to a possible October release. It's still only rumour from "the man with the contacts inside the company" and not the company itself.

MOST of the time it's just about money & studio permission for artwork and the retailer foots the bill for both the steelbook production and the discs to fill the case. However, it is clear that anyone can get a steelbook made. What it all comes down to is having the funds to pay for the steelbook case order + discs (if including them) + permission from studio on the artwork.

So, if I wanted to create my own, I'd submit that to the studio asking permission. If they approved it then I'd need to place an order with Scanavo (likely for the minimum 4,000 units required). The problem then lies in selling whatever that order consists of to make my money back. That's probably why it doesn't happen much outside of large retailers who can afford the front-loaded cost.

On occasion though, I bet a retailer will get permission to have them printed, but don't want to have 4,000 of each. This is when other retailers come into play. They can likely all just split an order of 4,000 (or more to cover all of their wants -> See Jack Reacher as a likely example of this scenario). So, 4 retailers order 5,000 and each gets 1,250 copies, which lowers the initial cost burden.

And, on occasion I would imagine that studios will foot the bill and then simply offer them to all of their clients for retail resale. However, this is much less likely since we never actually see these steelbook releases available from the studios directly through their own online stores (like WB) or in their retail stores (like Sony).

But you're talking about 4,000.
The hidef one had a 500 print run, the first ES exclusive 500, the second 1,000 and the third 2,000. The blufans ones are also 1,000.

Ya, well, I'm guessing that special permission is given for "smaller groups of a non-commercial nature" by Scanavo. It's the only explanation. Perhaps Scanavo thinks of it as a charitable type of thing. They know that these forums and the like are the main source of the butter that gets spread on their bread. Once in a while they will do a favour to those who are helping their industry thrive? But, I'm guessing it has to be a "catch us at the right time and we'll do a smaller print run" type of thing.

Or it maybe costs more when ordering less? I mean, the 4,000 print run might give retailers a big discount or something...

A blu-ray.com exclusive steelbook would be so cool... . Like making a few designs and people can vote. The design that wins will be produced and everyone who paid for the production (like every member who is interested pays $20 or something) gets 1 copy .
