I assume this is rethorical? Since they can make more money by reselling old movies with mew packaging and selling newer movies in normal cases first only to release an awesome packaged edition later on (dubble dip fest) and everyone knows this?

Yup, personally I'd like to know that it's going to be a movie I'm going to watch time and time again if I'm going to shell out steelbook money, not many modern movies have re-watchability factor IMO.

Seems to me Zavvi are picking up Play's mantel of providing back catalogue titles as Steelbooks while Amazon are doing a HMV and providing the new titles. I dont have a problem with that tbh, I'd of liked a Gangster Squad steelbook but I dont really have a problem going with the German one but apart from that the only other film released this year so far that I hope does get a steelbook is Oblivion and that's only just been released in cinema's so there's a good chance it will

Best post i have seen in a long time

I wish people would stop crying and whining so much, its either buy it or don't really that simple people. No one on the internet wants to hear your insipid *****ing and moaning about prices , re-releases or if someone is releasing too much steelbooks.

No, it is not THAT simple.
We are collector's. We collect things because they are different from other things and/or versions. That's why this subforum is in the 'COLLECTIBLES AND LIMITED EDITIONS' section. We expect that these collectibles stay limited (COLLECTIBLES - LIMITED EDITIONS) because we are buying these COLLECTIBLES and LIMITED EDITIONS with the intention of COLLECTING THEM. People collect things because they are unique, rare or limited. There is no purpose in collecting things which are advertised as 'LIMITED EDITIONS', if they can appear again without warning. That would take the fun out of COLLECTING COLLECTIBLES because the LIMITED EDITIONS are not really LIMITED EDITIONS anymore.

Get it???!?!?

No, its very simplistic my friend you're just over complicating it with an excuse that doesn't hold water because you are looking only at these "COLLECTIBLES" and "LIMITED EDITIONS" as a money factor and nothing more.Physical media such as home movie releases have never been worth anything in the long run and never will , How many people you see ponying up $300-$400 for a brand new un-cut VHS copy of the black caldron ? NO ONE

If you want wanna collect something that's gonna hold value or increase in value then you're in the wrong form of collecting my friend and i suggest you go get some Art , cars , wine , old guns or various other old history/antique pieces.Because in 4-5 years maybe more if we are lucky all these "COLLECTIBLES" and "LIMITED EDITION" BD's will be worthless and just like VHS AND DVD are now maybe you aren't old enough to have collected LD , VHS or DVD so you wont understand.

so its plain and simple

1. if you dont like re-releases dont buy them
2. if you dont like so many releases dont buy them
3. if you wanna be on your period get out of the steelbook game altogether

As long as they release quality steels with full outside and inside artwork I will be a happy customer.

I understand what you are saying but you don't speak for everyone if I'm honest. I collect steelbooks not because they are limited but because they look better to me than normal blu ray releases. They look nice in my cabinet and I don't mind paying a little extra for them.

I don't collect them to store them away in a vault and never use them, or because they are limited edition or because they are collectible. I buy one copy, open it and watch it. A lot of the people on here go to extreme lengths in my opinion with keeping things sealed and buying movies not to watch them or buying films they don't even like because it's a steelbook. Waste of money in my opinion.

If every film I liked was given the steelbook treatment then I would like that. I don't care if a release has three, four, five or ten thousand copies available. I buy them for myself and I'm the one that uses them.

All our own opinions I suppose. Some people may not think keeping items sealed is a waste and others do. Just like some people buy these because they just like them and others buy to rip off others.

I totally disagree that blu ray steelbooks will not hold their value over 10 years or more. The reason being is that blu ray media is possibly the last tangible media (disc sized anyway) that we will ever see for the mainstream.

Steelbooks are one of the most impressive forms of packaging ever seen therefore I believe they will hold their value beyond former media types.

Even if Ironman FS was sold on ebay for $10 I would keep mine. I am definitely keeping my Disney steels forever and a day.

But this does not excuse Zavvi for releasing so many steelbooks. It seems to me that in certain cases it seems like "Studio X has printed 3000 too many discs and can't move them". So Zavvi does a 3000 print run of a steelbook, gets rid of the excess print run stock. Voila. Things like Kill Bill and 300 have had so many steelbooks. So having yet another just seems silly. Would rather have new titles in steelbook format (or ones that never had one).

I have to agree. Zavvi will try to fleece collectors for as much as were worth.

i say put a stop to mass releases and put a bit more thought in to it

I give the same advice to a friend who compains about how bad the Resident Evil movies are yet still pays money to see them everytime they come out, he did the same with Saw movies too. They'll only stop when they stop making money, best way to get your point across is to act with your wallet.
