@oildude--wow, that's crazy.
![]() I read the wiki on "Tiger", but didn't catch that the replacement Tiger went on to do the film. I was thinking the film was first, and thus thought the first Tiger was the dog in the film. ![]() my mind is at peace now. ![]() Last edited by Arkadin; 05-22-2013 at 11:48 AM. |

Is this the movie with a smiley face mushroom cloud, not just on the poster but in an actual scene? I've been trying to figure it out ever since I saw it on tv as a kid.

This is one of Shout's more exciting "under the radar" releases - no one seems to be talking about it much but it's one of those things that just seems to have slipped by most people's radar much like DAMNATION ALLEY. Everybody's focusing on Swamp Thing and Adrienne Barbeau's missing boobs

Yes, finally got to watch it tonight. I am VERY happy. It looks damn good. Some speckles or scratches in places, and one section when they are inside the boiler in the old high school where there is maybe 30 seconds of chemical damage white "stains" that flicker across the screen. The grain is healthy and what you would expect from a low budget 70s film. Clarity and depth of field are excellent. Colors look vibrant. The last time I saw this was on VHS and I did not realize all of the Topeka residents are wearing clown make-up.
Also watch the LQ Jones and Harlan Ellision conversation. As mentioned above, it is a hoot. Thank you Shout Factory for bringing this to blu-ray. Last edited by oildude; 08-09-2013 at 05:07 PM. |

I picked up this Shout Factory Blu-ray of A Boy and His Dog earlier today when I saw it on the shelf at my favorite independent record store here in Atlanta, Criminal Records. I immediately shoved it to the front of my out-of-control still-unwatched Blu-ray list, and enjoyed seeing it tonight for the first time in over two decades.
A Boy and His Dog is pure 1970s awesomeness across the board, and I advise first-time viewers to go into the movie without reading anything about the plot beforehand. Harlan Ellison, who wrote the source story, is quite an extraordinary human being, in all of his abrasive and cynical glory. If you can find it, then I highly recommend Ellison's Deathbird Stories anthology, because it's full of gloriously dark short stories that are still edgy by today's standards. Just as essential, as one might guess from the name, is the huge anthology, The Essential Ellison: A 50-Year Retrospective, which includes "A Boy and His Dog." The bonus discussion on this Blu-ray with L.Q. Jones (whom I loved watching when I revisited Lone Wolf McQuade last week) and Harlan Ellison is really priceless. In terms of audio/video quality, the movie looks better than I ever would have imagined possible when I saw it on VHS at a young age. This is another win across the board for Shout Factory. Criminal Records, the above-mentioned indie record store, is pretty wonderful for stocking some great titles from Shout Factory, Scream Factory, Scorpion Releasing, Synapse Films, etc., and it's always tough for me not to blow out my bank account while I'm browsing that store. I made it out today with minimal casualties by only buying this Blu-ray of A Boy and His Dog and the new 2-CD Deluxe Edition of one of my favorite albums, Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain. I spotted the brand-new Arrow U.S. Blu-ray of Mark of the Devil on the shelf and spent a few minutes looking it over and debating, but I ultimately decided that I don't quite have the guts to see the uncut version of the movie (not yet, anyway). |

Recently saw A Boy and his Dog on Blu. I wasn't even aware of this release until recently, even though it came out three years ago. Surprised that this extremely obscure film made it to Blu at all.
Re: the print, I was impressed - definitely better than the regular DVD, which isn't always the case for these older films. The story was decent; interesting '70's post apocalyptic film - definitely low budget, but still well done. I do strongly prefer the original short story/novella by Harlan Ellison. IIRC, the story went into more detail re: how some of the dogs became telepathic; this wasn't really touched on in the film. |
