I like the home sharing feature of iTunes in conjunction with an AppleTV. It is better then PLEX with a Roku for sure.
I've been considering buying a Roku to play movies from my UV library and AIV since I have an Amazon Prime membership. I'm currently using VUDU and AIV Apps on my Samsung BD player but they crash all of time and the whole user experience for navigating and launching Apps on the player is almost laughable. I'm surprised to hear that downloading is not an option on the Roku considering it has a USB port.

Buy an AppleTV instead. You will be happier.

Roku is said to be able to in the future, but in conjunction with PLEX and CFF, not the USB port.

Yes, I already have an Apple TV and it is my primary player but I do have access to, by choice or not, UV content as well as AIV content, hence the question.

To me it was a question of what what I was going to digitized my entertainment library under.

Was I going to buy an AppleTV for each TV in my home and go with iTunes or go some other route?

For me the deal sealed with the D2D program. When I discovered I could add titles for which I held in physical media for a nominal administrative fee and have a vendor agnostic rights locker to transfer titles among providers FoC, there was no more hesitation.

For sure the AppleTV is a superior interface, but UV clobbers them when stepping back and looking at the big picture.

At least for me, that is the case.

Here is my library:

The lions share were added via D2D. I would not have these numbers if I elected iTunes. The cost would of been prohibitive.

That seems perfectly reasonable. For me Apple TV was and still is a better fit for my "personal digitized entertainment library".

With that said, assuming that all of your media content is going to come from a single source is not realistic. Yes, I also took advantage of the D2D program but my collection of DVDs was relatively small, around 30, and it didn't in my mind warrant choosing an inferior ecosystem such as UV as my sole media provider going forward. As I mentioned, as an Amazon Prime member, I have access to quite a selection of on demand content including movies, TV shows and music. It would be foolish for me not to take advantage of that based on a sworn allegiance to a single media provider.

As a consumer, I'm more concerned about finding an approach that works best for me as a whole and right now I get my media content through multiple sources.

I bought a digital copy of Doctor Who: The Web Of Fear. But otherwise, I tend to go for physical copies with or without UltraViolet over digital ones.
