Wow, two examples, they are totally the same. Although The Blob is a Sci-Fi horror films as well.

Also, I don't scream at:

Moon
District 9
Blade Runner
2001: A Space Odyssey
Wall-e
Robocop
Children of Men
Donnie Darko
Chronicle
Inception
The Matrix
Terminator 2 & 3 & 4
Transformers & 2 & 3
Star Trek & Into Darkness
Avatar
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
E.T.
Minority Report
A.I.
Star Wars 1,2,3,4,5 & 6
Escape from New York & L.A.
The Book of Eli
A Boy and His Dog
Planet of the Apes
Brazil
12 Monkeys
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Etc Etc.

They're not the same, they occasionally cross paths (like Sci-Fi films can have Western or Film Noir elements and Horror can have comedy elements) but they're pretty much different other than the fact you have some Sci-Fi films that can make you jump or scare you slightly.

Agreed.

There is some overlap between horror and science fiction, but then there is also overlap between horror and fantasy, or between science fiction and fantasy. Or any number of other genres. To conflate these two, of all the combinations there are, comes of rather oddly to me.

The Last Man on Earth
John Carpenter's The Thing
Westworld
Videodrome
Godzilla (1954)
The Blob (1958)
I'll add that I believe that sci-fi and horror go hand-in-hand more often than not.

I did not list Solaris (1972) or Planet of the Apes (1968) on my above list, because I tend to associate them more with pure sci-fi and not horror, but both films have elements of horror.

Can I just say, I don't believe in genre. Hell, I was tempted to put Mulholland Drive here because some parts could be categorized as SciFi, some horror...

Maybe I could put Magnolia in too: some parts are scary, some parts are utterly as perplexing as the existence of aliens...it's all about interpretation

Some people scream... I mean. Not you personally, JESUS!
I simply ment Horror scares people, Sci-Fi scares people...it doesn't scare me but none the less it scares people.
Horror and Sci-Fi are nearly the same with things played out in a different manner. But at the end of the day they borrow elements from one another.
Sci-Fi has a strange creature or an alien, Horror has a mad man with an axe...and no that isn't how all Sci-Fi and Horror movies are, I know, I know, BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT its all to scare us. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... I would call that VEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRTYYYYYYY Similar. Wouldn't you?
Horror and Sci-Fi go hand and hand... I know most people would agree with me on that.
You are arguing an invalid argument. I'm not trying to sound smart or be cocky, it's just the facts. Sci-Fi and Horror go hand and hand and hand and hand and hand and hand and hand and hand and hand. Both genres are to scare us...in a very similar way. Thats my only point.

I honestly can't tell if you're serious at this point, but I'll play ball.

Yes, some sci-fi scares people. No one is disputing that. Typically, that sci-fi that does scare people is a crossover. No one here is arguing that, say, Alien is not comfortably fitting in both genres.

You really clearly don't know. It's not even like most sci-fi has a strange creature (let alone one designed to scare the audience), or most horror has a man with an axe.

And yeah, in some cases they borrow elements from each other. Not enough to consider them the same genre. Not even close.

No, I think you are committing the fallacy of composition, where because some members of a set have a property, you assume they all do. In this, you are suggesting that because some sci-fi films are also horror films, they must all be.

It's not true.

Horror is, instrinsically, designed to scare us.

On the other hand, I'll cite Wikipedia's introduction to science fiction:

Science fiction is a genre of fiction with imaginative but more or less plausible content such as settings in the future, futuristic science and technology, space travel, parallel universes, aliens, and paranormal abilities. Exploring the consequences of scientific innovations is one purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas". Science fiction has been used by authors as a device to discuss philosophical ideas such as identity, desire, morality, and social structure.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction

Nothing that suggests it HAS to be about scaring us.

Yes, it CAN be. That does not mean it HAS to.

For every one sci-fi/horror film that exists, there are three that are sci-fi but not horror and six more that are horror but not sci-fi.

I'm not making those numbers up either. On IMDB there are 1441 feature-length films which are classified under both sci-fi and horror. There are 13216 such films under just horror. There are 6532 classified under just sci-fi. Sure, there is some overlap, but not nearly enough to justify a conflation of the genres.

Feel free to do a similar search including short films, TV movies, &c.

I'm going to go back to this point for a minute:

By this logic, any type of film could be considered horror (or sci-fi, or whatever), because any type of film could scare someone.

I'll be adding Wedding Crashers to my list momentarily, I guess.

OK. I'm done trying to explain how similar both genres are. I may have said it wrong or you may have misunderstood me. Let me re-word myself... Horror and Sci-Fi are very similar in many ways ALOT of the time. NOT all the time mind you. That is all I ment.
I'm not some dumb kid who doesn't know the difference. And please forget I even mentioned a comparison because it seems to start WWIII for some ungodly reason. Good day.

Thank you very much for your interest in this argument. Just to clear things up...I never said EVERY Sci-Fi and Horror movie was exactly the same in genre. I think everyone is misunderstanding me beyond words. I ONLY was wanting to mention that Horror and Sci-Fi are very similar in many ways. Just that. Maybe I worded it wrong or I was misunderstood IDK. I am a Sci-Fi and Horror fiend and I do not need wiki to tell me what they are. Most of my collection IS Sci-Fi and Horror. I didn't say both genres should be considered one. Excuse me for making a observation about them being very similar in many ways, not ALL as you two are insisting I said. Good day.

That scene alone makes it a great horror film in my book. The slow reveal KILLS me every time.

Thank you! My God, Here is someone I believe I could have human contact with and not rip my brains out trying to explain a simple comparison. I feel as you do about genre, Who cares about genre. I watch a movie for the story and entertainment value, Not the genre. haha
