Also, I don't scream at: Moon District 9 Blade Runner 2001: A Space Odyssey Wall-e Robocop Children of Men Donnie Darko Chronicle Inception The Matrix Terminator 2 & 3 & 4 Transformers & 2 & 3 Star Trek & Into Darkness Avatar Close Encounters of the Third Kind E.T. Minority Report A.I. Star Wars 1,2,3,4,5 & 6 Escape from New York & L.A. The Book of Eli A Boy and His Dog Planet of the Apes Brazil 12 Monkeys Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Etc Etc. They're not the same, they occasionally cross paths (like Sci-Fi films can have Western or Film Noir elements and Horror can have comedy elements) but they're pretty much different other than the fact you have some Sci-Fi films that can make you jump or scare you slightly. |

Agreed.
There is some overlap between horror and science fiction, but then there is also overlap between horror and fantasy, or between science fiction and fantasy. Or any number of other genres. To conflate these two, of all the combinations there are, comes of rather oddly to me. |

I did not list Solaris (1972) or Planet of the Apes (1968) on my above list, because I tend to associate them more with pure sci-fi and not horror, but both films have elements of horror. |

Can I just say, I don't believe in genre. Hell, I was tempted to put Mulholland Drive here because some parts could be categorized as SciFi, some horror...
Maybe I could put Magnolia in too: some parts are scary, some parts are utterly as perplexing as the existence of aliens...it's all about interpretation (Changing my list now) |

I simply ment Horror scares people, Sci-Fi scares people...it doesn't scare me but none the less it scares people. Horror and Sci-Fi are nearly the same with things played out in a different manner. But at the end of the day they borrow elements from one another. Sci-Fi has a strange creature or an alien, Horror has a mad man with an axe...and no that isn't how all Sci-Fi and Horror movies are, I know, I know, BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT its all to scare us. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... I would call that VEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRTYYYYYYY Similar. Wouldn't you? Horror and Sci-Fi go hand and hand... I know most people would agree with me on that. You are arguing an invalid argument. I'm not trying to sound smart or be cocky, it's just the facts. Sci-Fi and Horror go hand and hand and hand and hand and hand and hand and hand and hand and hand. Both genres are to scare us...in a very similar way. Thats my only point. Last edited by cramped_misfit90; 06-07-2013 at 02:01 AM. |

Yes, some sci-fi scares people. No one is disputing that. Typically, that sci-fi that does scare people is a crossover. No one here is arguing that, say, Alien is not comfortably fitting in both genres. Quote:
And yeah, in some cases they borrow elements from each other. Not enough to consider them the same genre. Not even close. Quote:

A lot of people have disagreed with your crazy leap, however. Quote:
Horror is, instrinsically, designed to scare us. On the other hand, I'll cite Wikipedia's introduction to science fiction: Science fiction is a genre of fiction with imaginative but more or less plausible content such as settings in the future, futuristic science and technology, space travel, parallel universes, aliens, and paranormal abilities. Exploring the consequences of scientific innovations is one purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas". Science fiction has been used by authors as a device to discuss philosophical ideas such as identity, desire, morality, and social structure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction Nothing that suggests it HAS to be about scaring us. Yes, it CAN be. That does not mean it HAS to. For every one sci-fi/horror film that exists, there are three that are sci-fi but not horror and six more that are horror but not sci-fi. I'm not making those numbers up either. On IMDB there are 1441 feature-length films which are classified under both sci-fi and horror. There are 13216 such films under just horror. There are 6532 classified under just sci-fi. Sure, there is some overlap, but not nearly enough to justify a conflation of the genres. Source: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?gen...e_type=feature http://www.imdb.com/search/title?gen...e_type=feature http://www.imdb.com/search/title?gen...e_type=feature Feel free to do a similar search including short films, TV movies, &c. I'm going to go back to this point for a minute: Quote:
I'll be adding Wedding Crashers to my list momentarily, I guess. Last edited by Kevin Holly; 06-07-2013 at 03:28 AM. |
