Since the Kino and VCI Blu-rays came out, hasn't the film received a restoration by UCLA that's been screened at festivals? I've been wanting to get this and was always eyeing the Kino disc for the non-DNRed version, but I thought the new restoration had received a lot of praise, so I was holding out hoping somebody would release it. I didn't want to buy the Kino disc and then have a release of this new restoration announced just a short time later. But I guess it doesn't seem likely to happen anytime soon now.

There was a rumor that Film Detective was talking to UCLA in 2018 about releasing the restoration. Last edited by yellowcakeuf6; 02-23-2020 at 11:25 PM. |

I have these:
It's been awhile since I've watched White Zombie. I forget which version I liked best but I remember there was one that was too dark and one that was too bright and one that was DNR'd to death. Last edited by Richard--W; 02-24-2020 at 03:57 AM. |

I own all of these except the for newer VCI release. Is the commentary on the VCI version different than the original Roan DVD? If it is I would be temped to get it with VCI 's sale going on now.

Did anyone get a chance to see it at a film festival , Any comparisons to the blurays ?
I thought that the VCI was from a 4k scan , they botched the first attempt with a horrible bit rate then fixed it . Is the UCLA a completely different restoration and what are the chances of ever getting a blu of it ? This is a funny statement from VCI, I can’t promise we won’t goof up some other DVD or BD project in the future, but I can promise we will fess up and then fix up, our goofs, the best we can. Bob Blair, president of VCI." That sounds very promising. At least there telling us they most likely screw up again . Last edited by sa5150; 03-19-2020 at 03:11 AM. |

Has anyone seen the new German release by Nameless which was released in 3 Mediabooks and a little later in a keep case and can comment on the transfer used?

I would love to see a true full-on restoration of “White Zombie.” Money, yes, a problem, but I would like to see something happen on the order of UCLA’s restoration of “Mystery of the Wax Museum”. |

Only a handful of people have seen UCLA’s restoration of Mystery of the Wax Museum.
The rest of us are still waiting. |

Though three different German dubs apparently already exist (all made after 2000), Nameless have opted to do a completely new dub. As they are a German company, and Germany has a big tradition for dubbing, it is probably a big sales point for them to have a new, better sounding and complete German dub track. They claim they have restored the image and have posted a few pictures, which compares their transfer with the transfers from the Kino and VCI blu-rays. However, the posted pictures are too small to really make out much of a difference other than the contrast appears to be better in their version. They also only compare to the DNR ridden "remastered" version of the Kino transfer and not the much more film-like "raw" version. So whether they are as heavy with the DNR as Kino were, will remain to be seen. Nameless also posted this comparison on YT of the different German dubs, including their own: I assume the video is taken from their restoration, but, again, the video quality is too compressed to really make any judgment on their use of DNR. From the look of it, it definitely looks like DNR has been used, when compared to the heavy grain of Kino's raw scan, but it is impossible to say whether it has been completely scrubbed like Kino's remastered version. We will have to wait to 2022 to see. Last edited by Mr. Thomsen; 11-23-2021 at 10:23 AM. |

Yes, it's this release. I believe it has some numbers watermarked. Though it's a blink and you'll missed it. I haven't watched my VCI disc for some time. Kino's 'raw' version is my go-to release.
