See, that one irritates me. It's the Guinness World Record holder for the biggest onscreen explosion, but because Mendes insisted on filming it all in one shot, it looks rubbish. A better action director would have shot the hell out of that thing.

I still like the Praxis shockwave effect from Star Trek VI; it was really cool in '91 and it still holds up very well today. People say that Lucas copied it for the Special Editions, but I don't see much similarity beyond the superficial.

The bridge explosion in The Wild Bunch when all those men on horseback go falling into the river.

The explosion at the end of the Bullitt car chase where the Dodge Charger goes flying into a gas station.

Blowing up the Bridge on the River Kwai.

Blowing up the shark in Jaws.

And finally, "Top of the World, Ma!" James Cagney getting blown up on top of that oil tank at the end of White Heat.
