Well that really sucks, i can't believe it. The multiple commentaries were the vest extras on LOTR. I wonder what reasoning there is for just the one track.

So you buy the boxset probably. It'd be nice to have a Martin Freeman one but he's so busy at the moment he probably hasn't had time to do it.

I know, I'll probably get it when the new format comes.

So glad I can buy a version without having to pay for 3D. Then there's a version for people who wanted 3D. Everyone wins .

If I remember correctly I believe the list price on the LOTR gift sets was around 80 dollars. So I'd expect to see it for around 55 to 60 dollars at release.

Well I kind of HAVE to get that one now don't I?

While the packaging leaves a lot to be desired it IS nice that it matches the colour of the special edition soundtrack.

It won't. There won't be a 48fps version. No player supports it and no manufacturer will make one for only 3 films. The 48fps was a failed experiment.

I think the only way you'll see a 48fps version of the film will be a digital download on a PC.

Why five discs? Does that mean the Hobbit Extended Trilogy edition would be 15 discs all together? I can wait for the extended trilogy edition!

Correct, in so much as that no-one will create a new version of the technology simply for this trilogy. If there are ever HFR players it will be years and years away. If someone says they'll wait then, to me, it's obvious they're not fussed about the release anyway.

Incorrect - it's far too early to judge it as such. Many people enjoyed it, especially those who don't normally enjoy 3D. It may be easy to just accept the loud yellings of the cynical or sneering (some of whom dismiss it with such cut-and-paste phrasings that it's doubtful they saw it at all), especially on forums like this where being the first to dismiss something seems to be the cool thing for a lot of posters to do, but there are plenty who thought it worked, to varying degrees of course.

Either way, writing the technology off as a failure after one film is incredibly short-sighted. It takes longer than that to fairly analyse a new format. And if what you say were true then Warners wouldn't be releasing the next two in the format.

Two discs for the 3D, one for the 2D and two for the Appendices. So yup, a 15 disc trilogy boxset

I noticed that too, I agree. And whilst the packaging is a step down from the LOTR:EEs it's still nicer than most. If the next two eacy have a similar image of a different character - say, Gandalf on the second, Thorin on the third - then it should make for a great set.

So unless i need to go to Specsavers, where is the pre-order for this thing on Amazon UK? I'm seriously surprised that they haven't got it listed in any shape or form...

Same here. So far all we have are placeholders for the 3D version and the 3D steelbook (and two DVD sets) but nothing for the 2D set or the statue edition, let alone pre-order details.

Yeah, day one for me. The extra 13 minutes is one thing but the additional 9 hours' worth of extras, yes please.
