As I was watching my Blu-ray of Stalag 17, I noticed this split-second pause at 36:30, when Cookie is describing Sefton just before the race bets. "Most unforgettable ch-aracters you've ever met."
It's only a minor flaw, but I cannot tell if it is the source material or the Blu-ray. The split-second pause happens each time I watch it. |

I'd be interested to know if anybody else has this same minor pause on their Blu-ray, so that I can decide whether to exchange mine. Aside from this one brief pause, the Blu-ray is flawless. |

I took my OCD self over to YouTube, where three different links exist to watch the movie in its entirety. The same freeze/stutter happens at the same spot in the movie in all three of those videos as well (at the 36:30 mark on the Blu-ray).
"I guess it's about time I told you a few more things about that Sefton guy. If I was anything of a writer I'd send it in to the Reader's Digest for one of those 'Most Unforgettable Ch----aracters You've Ever Met'..." It's the brief split-second freeze in the middle of the word, "characters." Apparently, this is inherent to the movie, and not a problem with my Blu-ray or my Blu-ray player. This does not dampen my enjoyment of this awesome Blu-ray at all, but I'm happy to stop obsessing about it now. |

![]() ![]() Stalag 17, a 1953 film about a volatile assortment of American sergeants held in a German prison camp during World War II, was one just one of several films that marked one of the most remarkable winning streaks of cinema from a single director. During the 1940s and 1950s, Billy Wilder could do no wrong, and he set new standards in any film genre of his choosing, whether it was the sultry film noir of Double Indemnity, the addiction-fueled drama of The Lost Weekend, the scathing condemnation of sensationalist media in Ace in the Hole, or even the sexy comedy of Some Like It Hot. Stalag 17 blends wartime tragedy and playful comedy with a lived-in and seemingly effortless style that kept me enthralled despite the limited confines of the story's setting. Most of the film takes place inside a cramped wooden barracks building on a purposely gritty landscape, but it always somehow conveys the reality of freezing nighttime temperatures, mud-soaked labor, the irritability that comes with constant hunger, and the need for playful diversions to keep the mind from succumbing to hopelessness. William Holden's Sefton is cynical and abrasive with a hard shell that serves him well when his heroic tendencies are called upon. Gil Stratton's stuttering "Cookie", who serves as the narrator, appears timid, but also possesses a low-key resilience. My favorite character, Robert Strauss's burly "Animal", provides some of the film's most hilarious moments, but also exudes an undeniable sympathetic side. Landmark director Otto Preminger, whose own films gave Billy Wilder no small degree of competition during that era, shines as the German guard who mixes dutiful commitment with the easygoing knowledge that prison officials must let a little bit of water flow through to keep the metaphorical dam from bursting. On Blu-ray, this black-and-white feature is well-served with near-perfect video and audio detail needed for the subtleties of each scene, and the nighttime sequences of searchlights and barking dogs convey a nail-biting realism. This movie does not strike me as a demo disc, as this movie leans on human interactions instead of explosive or wondrous eye candy visuals, but I am inclined to believe that fellow fans of this film will be immensely pleased. A documentary on the making of the film and a commentary track with some of the involved players are pleasantly informative, despite some notable long gaps in the commentary, but the main supplementary draw is a short feature of interviews with former prisoners of war. Watched this last night. Such a good film, and the Blu-ray does it justice. Detail is crisp, only thickening up when dupes are cut in, natch, and the B&W photography is beautifully rich. The lossless sound is full and robust.
Whether it's Paramount or Warners who have ensured that it's been treated so well, I don't know. But kudos all the same. Never realised how much Aaron Eckhart looks like William Holden. I think it's the chin. |

Funny stuff going on with this title at Amazon today. I started getting price tracker notifications from here around 5:00 A.M. today (had it set for $10). The price kept dropping by like 25-50 cents several times throughout the morning. I ordered when it hit $8.59 around noon, then the price started going up incrementally again. Now it seems to be back to the "pre-sale" price of $13.89.
Looking forward to revisiting this great film! Thank you, Blu-ray.com Price Tracker! Last edited by GrouchoFan; 09-10-2023 at 12:26 AM. Reason: Fixed a typo |

Also for those that didn't pickup The Dirty Dozen yet (yeah, not the best PQ), there's a 2-pack with Stalag 17 for .... $13.86. Great price for that standalone though. I think I need to start using that PriceTracker. Then again, I do enjoy the hunt .... https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Stala...Blu-ray/90434/ |
