Another thing to remember is 300 sold a huge amount of copies, and there was a huge lead for BD. I doubt Planet Earth sold more than about 1/10 what 300 sold, so even if HDDVD sold more copies, who cares?

Yeah baby, my BBC version arrived yesterday. Dave Attenburg rules. However my disc one locked up on start up. So I am waiting on the exchange. If it happens on the next set, I'll have to contact Sony about the firmware.

I watch TONS of documentaries. Everything from how vehicles for mining are built to WWII stuff to how they make Twinkies.

Oh, and if Meerkat Manor ever hits BLU, I'd buy it.
I haven't seen it but my understanding is it is a documentary. Meaning that it is jammed full of interesting facts. I don't think it just scene after scene of landscapes with no narration. There is wildlife, predator/prey conflicts, probably geographical and metoerlogical phenomena, and the likes. I think that is waht you are asking about, so would someone tell me if I am correct?

I think a big reason why it would look so good is because it was filmed entirely in HD. A lot of movies are filmed with multiple cameras and some not as great as others (which is why you'll see differing levels of picture quality in the same movie).
It has nothing to do with the cameras, it has to do with the place it's in, the available light, the stylistic choices made. Shooting several angles at once is extremely common practice. It saves time and is more natural when you cut.

It's simply that PE is shot on HD video, which because it's not a stylized dramatic production tends toward bright shiny and clean.

PE is still my favorite Blu-Ray in my collection

If you don't appreciate a documentary like that your either 11 years old or retarded.

You could put one drop of poison in a glass of water and maybe not be harmed if you drink the whole thing. If you add 2 drops the next time you get sicker and so on until you die.

I saw this method used on a tv movie once. Forget if it was based on a true story.

My point is, every little bit helps. Snow flakes are the most fragile thing in nature. But look at what they can do in numbers.

I think what's important is that Planet Earth should be purchased because it is an essential collection for any true fan of high definition. Maybe I hang around with a geeky crowd, but the collection is just something cool to chill out and watch. It's about as close to natural art as one can get when sitting on a couch.

PE will pass the HD DVD soon enough. It's consistantly several places above it in the nielsens, and selling quite a bit more. There's weeks where PE HD doesn't even show up.

I probably won't be buying it. Sorry, but I didn't think it was all that great. I like nature documentaries, but this was kind of boring. Plus, it is constantly on the on demand channel.

There is nothing wrong with VC1. Give it enough bandwith and it shines just like AVC or MPEG2 for that matter.

PE is not only breathtakingly beautiful, it's really entertaining and interesting. Edutainment at its best. Sadly enough, there are a few scenes that show it's a bitstarved VC1 port from HD DVD. Still, demo material if I ever saw one.

Planet Earth has the best picture quality of anything to date. I would have to say, IMO, that Final Fantasy: Spirits Within comes close as well.

For the areas where there is complaint of posterization or the white static, I would have complained too, except for the fine print on the box, where not all areas were able to be filmed in HD. It does have some extreme locations, such HD capture may not have been possible.

Really, I don't care if it drops a little bit in PQ at some points. Overall, it is worth the investment.

I'll have to poke my brother and tell him to buy it. He wants to borrow my copy.

i hear you. and where i kind of agree and totally feel you, i dont think that planet earth sales are going to make or break the war. harry potter, however, is a different story. being one of the biggest film franchises of all time, its bd vs hd dvd sales will count the most. this christmas will decide everything. if we need to buy anything....this is it. but yes...PE is going to go on my christmas list....

Aside from movies and classic TV, documentaries are where it's at for me. I actually bought both the Blu-ray and standard DVD versions of Planet Earth. The BD for the stunning picture quality, and the DVD for the extras.

I can't recommend this collection enough. Even if you're not a fan of documentaries, I think this one will draw you in and you'll be hooked.

Default okay, okay...

I just ordered it on Amazon. It's hard for me to justify a $65 purchase, but I wanted to get 2001, and could get free shipping if I had them mailed together.

I LOVE Planet Earth so much. $65 is still a really good deal. This is still the BD that has amazed me the most. It is a prime example of why we need HighDef discs, not SD.

LOVE the shallow water episode. My jaw was dropped for like ten minutes straight

just look at the numbers. you'll see that the hd-dvd version of PE may be outselling BD's version...by peanuts. but 300 BD is laying the smack down on the HD DVD version. its a non issue. also notice the only 3 other Warner neutral titles - the Departed, Happy Feet and Superman Returns. pure ownage. just imagine what would happen with Batman, the Matrix and V. we would outsell hd dvd's total ytd sold copies in a week!

Oh hell yes...

At first, I thought this show could possibly be the stupidest thing I have ever heard of (the whole humanizing animals thing redone and all), but then I watched it.

OMG.

Meerkat Manor is some hardcore sh*t. It makes the Sopranos look like Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.

"Squiggy just can't seem to fend for himself so the rest of the Whisker's family is moving on... Squiggy must now fend for himself, alone, in the desert. But, it is better for the family overall." (camera shows Squiggy and his deformed leg sitting in the hot red sand whimpering as the family runs off ditching him there... he's only a pup!).

I won't even touch on the drama when Len got taken by the 'bird of prey' or when Carlos' facial injury got infected but he forced himself to go on until the 'family' could find a new home... then died.

I was hoping Planet Earth would drop down in price some more before picking it up, but looks like it's pretty close to bottomed out now so may get it next week. BBC, of course.

I wouldn't call 134,000 being your #1 of all time disc "pure ownage" to be honest.
